High load averages with latest kernel and USB drives?
I'm having a server report a high load average when backing up Postgres database files to an external USB drive. This is driving my loadbalancers all out of kilter and causing a large volume of network monitor alerts. I have a 1TB USB drive plugged into a USB2 port that I use to back up the production drives (which are SCSI). It's working fine, but while doing backups (hourly) the

after lm-fit: equality of two regression coefficients test
Hi Let's assume, we have a multiple linear regression, such as the one using the Scottish hills data (MASS, data(hills)): one dependent variable: time two independent var (metric): dist, climb if I am interested, after (!) fitting a lm: my. lm <- lm(time ~ dist + climb, data = hills) in the equivalence (or non-equivalence) of the two predictors "dist" and

Bug in stepAIC?
Hi, First of all, thanks for the great work on R in general, and MASS in particular. It's been a life saver for me many times. However, I think I've discovered a bug. It seems that, when I use weights during an initial least-squares regression fit, and later try to add terms using stepAIC(), it uses the weights when looking to remove terms, but not when looking to add them:

External USB disk devices cause high load
Hi On a CentOS 4.7 box running on older hardware when i plug an external flash disk or similar into the system the device shows up in dmesg but it is not usable. The load on the system starts to climb for no apparent reason. If i try to look at the partitions on the disk with fdisk it just hangs. If the device is removed the load remains high. Does anyone know what processes are responsible

SMBD CPU climbs sky high when writing DPX files
Hello, I am experiencing a strange problem when writing (capturing) DPX video files to a Linux/Samba share. Basically, I'm seeing seeing a single smbd process go from 9 percent CPU utilization to 100 percent CPU utilization over the course of about 40 minutes. When smbd reaches 100 percent, the capture stops (drops frames). I have tested this with three different filesystem formats

Asterisk hogging CPU resources
Here's the problem: I start asterisk, and it takes up around 3-4% of my CPU resources. However, this number continues to climb over the hours until it is close to 100%. Usually it takes around a day to climb up to approximately 95 or 96% Has anybody experienced the following problem before?

Expresscard Wireless
I bought a laptop with no PCMCIA slot, just expresscard. Instead of using a usb dongle for wireless, I would like to use an expresscard if possible. Ubiquiti makes one that uses atheros chip. Has anyone successfully used an expresscard wifi card in FreeBSD? Any info? Thanks

Help -- rsync Causing High Load Averages
This is my situation and I am running into dead ends. We have a server with about 400GB of data that we are trying to backup with rsync. On the content1 server we had rsyncd.conf as: [content1] path = / comment = Backup list = no read only = yes hosts allow = 192.168.22.181 hosts deny = * uid = root gid = root and on the backup server we had a crontab entry as follows:

Dovecot 1.2.2
Hi, I've just tried upgrading from 1.1.8 to 1.2.2. As soon as the new version was started up the number of imap/pop3 processes began to climb to 800+, where I normally have about 300 or so connections at any given time. The load on the server also climbed to 150+. I've reverted back to 1.1.18, which is running just fine, but is there anything I can do to help trace what was causing the

Laptop SCSI capability supported by CentOS 7
I'm looking for a well-supported ExpressCard or PCMCIA/CardBus SCSI card that can do at least FastSCSI (Narrow, Wide not necessary) that is supported by CentOS 7. I have an Adaptec SlimSCSI 1460D, but it doesn't seem to be supported (it's previously supported by the aha152x driver). Any ideas are welcomed, other than 'just use a desktop.' I am not sure a USB or Firewire

Install to internal USB?
Saw a trick today, wondering if anybody else had done/tried this? Assume you have a 1U rackmount with 4 front-accessed drive bays, and you want all four bays for a 4-disk RAID5 storage. The idea is to use an internal USB adapter and a couple of bigger USB thumb drives to install to, RAID 1 style, freeing up all your external drive bays. At first, I didn't think that a thumb drive would

Obtaining log level 10 for just specified user(s) (MS Word & Excel File Locking issue - still)
Is it possible to make samba produce a log at level 10 for only a specified user(s), I am trying (still) to figure out why Samba processes climb to 100% CPU and the user loses connection with MS Word & Excel files being locked. Have been dealing with this issue for quite some time now, but had to put it on the back burner for a while because we had little time to deal with it. Apprently only

high context switching and high load averages slowing down system
Hi All, I have a HP DL 580 with 4 3 GHz CPUs and 4 GB RAM. I'm running Oracle on it. Throughout the day I am getting high load averages (6 - 18) and at the same time I see context switching go over 300,000. Sometimes over 500,000. This is slowing the system down to a crawl. My OS is RHEL 3 AS Update 4 with the 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp kernel. Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix

Memory leak
Has anyone noticed (using the linux command 'top') a gradual increase in memory usage when asterisk is under heavy processing? I am currently pumping 4 ISDN spans (T-1) through my asterisk test system, and have seen the memory used value in top climb steadily each second. Concurrently, the value for "cached" in top also climbs, but occasionally it drops, as well.

Fastthread memory leak?
Hi All, I have an app making extensive use of Mutex and was concerned about the memory leak I have read about. I saw some sample code to reproduce the problem here: http://pastie.caboo.se/10194 So I thought I would run it myself to see the problem. I do not see a memory leak when using the sample code, but if I require "fastthread" before "thread" using fastthread (0.6.4.1)

Underwater in 10 - 20 seconds
I'm running a X100P connected to a POTS line and a TDMP400P w/ two FXS daughter cards. Both calling out from one of the FXS phones (internally) or calling my home number (externally) the FXO card starts to freak out. By freak out I mean I can still hear but it sounds like you are underwater, there is an annoying hiss or buzz on the line as well. If I hang up and pick up another house phone

IMAP EXPUNGE disconnect/box hang - Fedora Core 2, Squirrelmail and Evolution
I'm a bit befuddled by this behavior. I've been using dovecot for close to a year, and recently the Fedora Core 2 Update: dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2 build came in via yum. Since then I occasionally get this EXPUNGE disconnect error. When the error hits, the box does not crash but I can no longer log in*, nor start any new processes. I happen to have gkrellm running and I see a slow but steady
