Shortcomings of Maildir++ layout
Hi, I am trying to deal with the problem, that under regular mbox format a path can lead to either a file or a directory, but not both, while under IMAP, a path is usually both, a message folder containing subfolders. I found dovecot's approach to this problem, the Maildir++ layout described under http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MboxChildFolders , and was astonished to see, what problems come with

LAYOUT=maildir++ under mbox?
Whilst documenting LAYOUT=maildir++ under dbox, that got me thinking: Can we specify :LAYOUT=maildir++ with mbox? If I have it right, this should then remove the problem of not being able to have messages and mail subfolders in the same mail folder. So for example if we had mail location specified as: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:LAYOUT=maildir++ we would have files: ~/mail/inbox - file

mbox, hierarchical folders/folders and IMAP
Hello, I'm now dealing with funny problem. I try to use Dovecot (2.1.rc1, actually) and mbox format to store old mailing, to keep logic of "one folder = one file". If I'd choose Maildir, I'd be able to create hierarchical folders (like "OldMail -> Maillists -> Dovecot"), and in fact on disk such a folders would be stored as real folders with dots in

Moving from MBOX to Maildir or DBox ?
Hello Actually we use MBOX format for all our IMAP access but users complain they cannot create subfolders in imap folders, of course they cannot because of MBOX format ... I need gurus advices on changing mailbox format Maildir of Dbox ? What would be the safest way to go ? Note : we extensively use Thunderbird here. Thanks

Binc IMAP "IMAPdir" style layout
Hi, I'm in the process of migrating several years worth of mail to be accessible via an IMAP server. Some time ago, I evaluated both Binc IMAP and Dovecot and found Dovecot to be much faster on large folders, which is quite important to me. One thing I did not however manage to determine from the documentation on namespaces is whether or not it is possible to implement what Binc IMAP calls

Converting layouts
Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.2.10 with mbox format (which implies layout=fs) and I would like to switch to maildir++ layout without changing format in order to implement subfolders for IMAP users. I understand that I should move the INDEX location to avoid some namespace conflict (it would be a good idea anyway: I'll move them on another disc :). Now I have mail_location =

problems with public (sub)folders
Hi, i am trying to share a maildir++ mailbox to other users but i can only subscribe to the root directory. The subfolders of the public mailbox do not appear in the exported list. Does anyone has an idea how i can share the subfolders too without creating symlinks for every single folder? Best, Frederik >>>>> ls -lA /var/mail/public .user01 -> /var/mail/user01/Maildir

Shared folders using mbox format
Hi, I'd like to create a shared folder to be used with an Outlook client and a Thunderbird client. We're currently using mboxes. I've read the documentation here about creating a shared folder: https://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared It doesn't make reference to how to do this using mbox format. Is it possible? Should we convert to Maildir? Perhaps there's a way to

IMAP subfolders and MDBOX
Hello We actually use MBOX format on our mailhub but this does not permit to create IMAP subfolders. Many users are asking me fot this feature and I agree with them of course. My problem is to choose the format that will permit imap subfolders creation. Maildir is not my favorite format and I wonder about MDBOX. Does it permit imap subfolders creation ? It is possible to convert from MBOX to

mbox with sub-folders and messages?
Hi, Is it possible to have dovecot configured to use mbox format and yet have folders that contains sub-folders and messages? I'm thinking of a simple setup where any files directory with extension .sbd are presented to the IMAP client without the extension. So if you have a mbox file named BOX01 and a directory name BOX01.sdb would show has one on the client side (note: that is the way

Sub-Sub-Subfolders not shown after converting from maildir to mdbox
Hi again, I just recognized a problem concerning subfolders after converting from maildir to mdbox. Thunderbird and SeaMonkey don?t show folders that are subfolders of subfolders. Have a look at the filesystem: discovery:/var/mail/domain.tld/patrick/mdbox/mailboxes/Folder1/Folder2# ls -l insgesamt 8 drwx------ 2 vmail vmail 4096 5. Everytime I try to create a folder under my imap-inbox, I get an error like "can't upload folder...", but after this message I can see a new folder under my inbox-folder, but I can't use it ... How to get rid of sub-folders ?
Hello, OK, no answers on my previous e-mail. I'll rephrase it. How can I get rid of subfolders on a users' tree-like structure on dovecot ? Which file must I "touch" ? TIA, s. ? ---- "I merely function as a channel that filters music through the chaos of noise" - Vangelis

How to see folders/subfolders/emails through imap
Hello all, I am trying to do something very simple - at least thats what I thought. I have some fs, it contains folders and subfolders with email files ordered like maildir. Now I try to set up dovecot on top simply to let some imap account watch these email files. But I cannot see any folders at all. I can create new folders and see them, but I cannot create subfolders as subdirs like

Question about subfolders
Hi, I've got an old dovecot installation (0.99.10.5) which is used as the back-end for a squirrelmail web mailer. Now I need to decide whether to update it to a newer version of dovecot or to switch to a different software. One feature that I really need is to be able to place messages and subfolders in a folder at the same time. This is with mbox format files (I can't use maildir). The

No status for INBOX/* in mbox NS (2.1.6)
Maybe it's fixed, but the last "interesting" text in the Changelog was before 2.1.6. Most of our users still have mboxes in the classical layout, so you can't have subfolders and messages in the same folder, *except for the INBOX*, as it is physically separate. Someone complained that he saw subfolders in roundcube he couldn't delete, because they didn't show up in the

Maildir + Evolution
I don't know if this is an Evolution bug or not, but when I use the maildir format with Dovecot 0.99.10p2 (from OpenBSD packages collection) and connect to it from Evolution 1.4 using IMAP, Evolution displays subfolders incorrectly. It actually does not show any subfolders, only root folders with names like "Folder.Subfolder" and "Folder.Subfolder.Subsubfolder".

Relocate subfolders to different mount point
I would like to relocate the subfolders of the Sent folder to a different location. Now send messages mail is stored in mbox format at the location /home/users/testuser/mail/.Sent. I would like to store the subfolders Sent/2017 and Sent/2018 at the location /home/archive/users/testuser/.Sent.2017 and /home/archive/users/testuser/.Sent.2018 Is this even possible? Help: RH9 upgrade (mbox)
I just upgraded my RH9 server with UW-IMAP to Fedora Core 2 and after a short try with Cyrus, I'm hoping to get Dovecot configured. My problem is getting Dovecot to recognize my old mbox mail folders. It correctly shows the INBOX contents from the /var/spool/mail/davis mbox. However, I also had a bunch of mboxes such as: /home/davis/Mail/Sent /home/davis/Mail/Lists/list1 Reading the
