yum dependency problem
Hi!
I recently removed (rpm -e) all the openoffice packages (2.0.4) from
Centos and replaced them with Sun's packages for openoffice 2.4. Works
fine.
however, now whenever I run yum update I get this:

yum pinning rpms
I did a little googling for this, but only found meaningless
references, since pin has too, too common other meanings.
Is there a way to pin a version of a particular package with yum/rpm?
I have the rpms for the beta 2.0 version of OpenOffice installed, so
I'm not interested in the updates for OpenOffice 1.1.2-24.6.0.EL4
which are now coming in. Is there a way to instruct yum to ignore this

5.4-->5.5 Upgrade broke OO 3.2.0
In order to get an OpenOffice configuration that is closer in
compatibility with MS Office 2007, I removed the standard OO in 5.4 via
yum and installed the latest (3.2.0) from OpenOffice.org. Ran that
config for many months without a problem.
However, when I allowed the upgrade to 5.5, OO broke. I finally had to
remove all traces of OO 3.2.0, and start over. That worked...until yum
tells me that

Strange su behavior after installing latest CentOS updates
I did a "yum update" on my CentOS 6 systems yesterday for the first time in about a month and now have some automated processes failing because the PATH is not set up correctly when using "su". The problem is very easy to see by comparing the output of the following two commands:
# su - <user> -c "env | grep PATH"
# su <user> -c "env | grep

Need help resolving yum update issues on mixed architecture system
I have been using 32-bit CentOS since the 4.X days without a real need for 64-bit, but in preparation for CentOS 7, I have installed 64-bit CentOS 6 on a test system to qualify all our builds. However, in order to build some of our current 32-bit applications, I had to install some i686 packages, including glib.
Now when I try to do a "yum update" on this test system, I get the dreaded

version pinning with yum
Well, there's a bug in the globbing for the tcsh with 5.4, and my boss has
filed a bug report. Meanwhile, I downgraded tcsh on those systems whose
users use that as their shell.
Until it's resolved, he wants me to pin the version. Googling, I see
someone a few years ago, answering someone's question, suggested adding
exclude=openoffice*
near the top of /etc/yum.conf.
I also see, more

centos 5.2 for real this time
I did a yum update last night at about 23h15 EDT (-4). No upgrade.
I just did a yum update this morning at about 08h45 (-4). for my system
there's about 348 megs of updates.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to remove OO.o 2.0.whatever which
is being upgraded to 2.3.whatever. I'm using 2.4.1 on my 4.6 boxes
(have always been using the latest OO.o on them since installation a

Rsyncing UPdate repo yoyoing
It has been crazy this past week how a rsync on the update repo keeps
downloading a number of openoffice.org rpms then deleting them. And the
repodata directory seems to be messed up so that I have problems on some
systems doing updates with it. My rsync script is:
#!/bin/sh
rsync -auv rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.2/updates/i386/ \
--delete --exclude=debug/

4.4 update quits unexpectedly
After 2 good updates to 4.4, my 3rd is giving me trouble. I did all 3
installs the same:
yum clean all
yum update python-sqlite sqlite yum
yum clean all
yum upgrade
This one, however, quits during the header download. I get "[Errno -1]
Header not complete, trying another mirror", then "[Errno 256] No more
mirrors to try".

Allow updates but not upgrades
Hi.
At the moment it seems my machines just update to the latest current
release . I install a 6.0 machine and run yum update , and next thing
its 6.2 .
I have a requirement where I need machines to only upgrade to even
numbered sub releases eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 and only on my approval. But
will allow updates within a given release.
How can I achieve this ?
If I sync the repositories for eg: 6.0

Yet another yum/rpm update problem
I am in the process of updating a dozen or so workstations from
CentOS 4.3 to CentOS 4.4. I set up a local YUM repository, and have
been able to successfully update all systems except for one. Both
yum and rpm either hang or core dump on this system. I've done a
"yum clean all" and an "rpm --rebuilddb" (after deleting the __db
files). I was able to

yum-proxy?
Hi,
I've been using Debian for a few years, and there was one nifty little
app that made installing and updating so much easier: apt-proxy.
Most of the time, I'm taking care of small LANs with an average of five
client PCs. But this is a very remote place in South France, so most
villages only have 512 kbps DSL. One major update for openoffice.org-*,
and I have to wait the whole day

Lots of Centos 5.2 updates already
I just completed my first 5.2 install. For 'completeness' I 'tested
out' yum update.
Guess what? For this minimum install, there were 43Mb of updates to
download.
So I went over to my local repo server and setup a /centos/5.2/updates
directory and started the rsync to get all the updates:
155 files taking up 943Mb. Already. Wow! Perhaps something to do with

Updating firefox after a long time yum-excluded it and having installed it from .rpm
Hello,
I've been stuck for a while with an old version of firefox, installed
from local .rpm (I know.. I should have downgraded using yum, instead)
and added a exclude=firefox to the relevant .repo file. I did that
after a yum-update has brought firefox 52+, and all add-ons were
deprecated because of their new add-on scheme.
Today that all the add-ons I need are available, I've tried

Yum updates packages for other arch too
Hi,
I have the x86_64 arch on my server so therfore i expect that yum
updates only x86_64 packages.
With the last *yum update* i?ve noticed a strange behaviour while
retrieving the needed packeges. As you you see, yum wants install
packages for different architectures:
glibc x86_64 2.3.4-2.25 base 4.9 M
glibc i686 2.3.4-2.25 base 5.1 M
