slanted ends of horizontal lines for certain line widths
Hello, if I plot a horizontal line, e.g., plot(c(1,2),c(1,1),xlim=c(0,3),lwd=2,type="l") or plot(c(1,2),c(1,1),xlim=c(0,3),lwd=4,type="l") then the left end (1st example) or both ends (2nd example) of the lines are not rectangular but slanted on the graphical display (screen). That behavour first occurred when I was trying to plot a stepfun, e.g., y <-

bar plot colors
All, I have a question regarding colors in bar plots. I want to stack a total of 18 cost values in each bar. Basically, it is six cost types and each cost type has three components- direct, indirect, and induced costs. I would like to use both solid color bars and bars with the slanted lines (using the density parameter). The colors would distinguish cost types and the lines would

Changing ComputerModern in postscript(...): A first attempt at contributing....
Hi First off, thanks to all the various R developers, your package is very impressive. I'm not sure what the protocols are for contributing, and I've not done this before, so please excuse nay obvious errors or oversights... Also I'm by no means an R,TeX/LaTeX, or typesetting expert, I have largely stumbled my way to this point. Objective: I'd like to get R postscript(...) to

45 Degree labels on barplot? Help understanding code previously posted.
Dear colleagues, i found a line or two of code in the help archives from Uwe Ligges about creating slanted x-labels for a barplot and it works well for my purposes (code below). However, I was hoping someone could explain to me precisely what the code is doing. I'm aware it's invoking the text command, and I know the first ttwo arguments to text are x and y co-ordinates. I'm also

Correct Computer Modern font in postscript(..) output
Hi, I'm trying to get the correct font used when generating italic text in an R grahic. I have a set of labels that print correctly except it seems the italic text is justr a slanted version of the TeX computer modern normal font... I'm using R v1.8.1 on Windows XP, and I get the same result if I build the pdf using Adobe Acrobat or using MikTeX The labels:

Stat textbook recommendations?
Hello, I'm looking for a textbook that can explain some of the math behind the intro-to-intermediate stuff like ANOVA, multiple regression, non- parametric tests, etc. A little background: I took an intro stats course last year and would like to further my education. Being as that was the highest (and only) stats class the local community college offers, it looks like I'm on

knitr customization
I am trying to transition from Sweave to knitr, but there are a few things about customization of the appearence of R input and output that I did not get yet. Maybe somebody on the list can help me. In my Sweave presentations I used a slanted font for the R input and a normal font for the output, both in a small font. I also indented everything by an extra 2em. All this was achieved by the

draw stripes in a circle in R
hi david Thank you very much for the hack of draw.circle that you proposed me. I don't understand some part of the code, why do you pass radius as a vector in the function (if I understand well the purpose of the for loop) ? Also what is ymult? If I set the radius to the value 0.85 as I wanted (so as a scalar), I don't see any difference in the result when I call this function

Hidden Markov model in R: books or tutorial biomed/ecology slant
Hi, I was just wondering if there are any books on R that have applications using Hidden Markov models or anyone with tutorials/exercises that can be shared. Ideally, these would have a bio/ecological slant though not neccesarily. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Flac logo font
Just curious as to which font the logo on the site is using. Looks a lot like Kaapeli Bold, but when I zoom in closely there appear to be subtle differences (perfectly round hole in the a, slightly more slanted l). Thanks, MLG

Microsoft makes hard call for input
hi all, you might be interested in this article. cheers, joe A Sydney software engineer has been embroiled in a controversy in which Microsoft stands accused of trying to use him as a paid proxy to finesse entries on the Wikipedia site. draw stripes in a circle in R
dear R users, I would like to fill a circle with yellow stripes instead of a uniform yellow color. To draw the circle I used the following command after having loaded the (very nice !) plotrix library : library(plotrix) pdf("MWE.pdf",width=8, height=8)

SPSS, social science majors, and R
Hi Roland and folks: Roland's and Susanna's comments were very interesting. I think we need to keep in mind that unlike SPSS, R is more than a statistical package. It's a tool. SPSS does indeed make life easy, particularly for data preprocessing (or data "cleaning"), something that is perhaps not advisable using R (the current versions). Also, I think it's a myth that R

Bumps chart in R
Hi there, I would like to make a 'bumps chart' like the ones described e.g. here: http://junkcharts.typepad.com/junk_charts/bumps_chart/ Purpose: I'd like to plot the proportion of people in select countries living for less then one USD pr day in 1994 and 2004 respectively. I have already constructed a barplot - but I think a bumps chart would be better # The barplot and data
