how to speed up the inefficient code
hi, i'm really in trouble to simulate some experiment. that is, it takes too much time to process the following code. following is short example, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p<-data.frame(a=rnorm(10),b=rnorm(10),c=rnorm(10),d=rnorm(10)) test<-data.frame(a=rnorm(1),b=rnorm(1),c=rnorm(1),d=rnorm(1))

macro function
hi, I know how to use the "for" loop function like: for(i in 1:ncol(mat)){ mat[i]<-b[i,2] } but, in this case r1<-b[1,1] r2<-b[2,1] r3<-b[3,1] r4<-b[4,1] * * * r3002<-b[3002,1] r3003<-b[3003,1] - must make vectors how should I make a efficient code for that? Is there anything in R like SAS MACRO function? Please help me. -- View this message in context:

How to speed up a for() loop
Dear all, Does anyone have any idea on how to speed up the for() loop below. Currently it takes approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Because of the size of Nsim and N, simulating a multivariate normal (instead of simulating Nsim times a vector of N normal distributions) would require too much memory space. Many thanks for your kind help, Simona N=3000 PD=runif(N,0,1) cutoff.=qnorm(PD)

Speed difference between df$a[1] and df[1,"a"]
I was surprised to find that df$a[1] is an order of magnitude faster than df[1,"a"]: > df <- data.frame(a=1:10) > system.time(replicate(100000, df$a[3])) user system elapsed 0.36 0.00 0.36 > system.time(replicate(100000, df[3,"a"])) user system elapsed 4.09 0.00 4.09 A priori, I'd have thought that combining the row and column

lapply() reccursively
Hi all, I was wondering whether it is possible to use the lapply() function to alter the value of the input, something in the spirit of : a1<-runif(100) a2<-function(i){ a1[i]<-a1[i-1]*a1[i];a1[i] } a3<-lapply(2:100,a2) Something akin to a for() loop, but using the lapply() infrastructure. I haven't been able to get rapply() to do this. The reason is that the "real"

Internal state indicating if a data object has NAs/no NAs/not sure (Was: Re: Speeding up matrix multiplies)
Hi, I'm just following your messages the overhead that the code for dealing with possible NA/NaN values brings. When I was setting up part of the matrixStats package, I've also though about this. I was thinking of having an additional logical argument 'hasNA'/'has.na' where you as a user can specify whether there is NA/NaN:s or not, allowing the code to avoid it or not.

gregexpr slow and increases exponentially with string length --> how to speed it up?
Dear All, I have a long string and need to search for regular expressions in there. However it becomes horribly slow as the string length increases. Below is an example: when "i" increases by 5, the time spent increases by more! (my string is 11,000,000 letters long!) I also noticed that - the search time increases dramatically with the number of matches found. - the perl=T option
