CentOS 6.4 in the making perhaps?
I see Johnny Hughes has released CR-updates for CentOS 6. Is CentOS 6.4 brewing yet then? 8-) -- BW, Sorin ----------------------------------------------------------- # Sorin Srbu [Sysadmin, Systems Engineer] # Dept of Medicinal Chemistry, Phone: +46 (0)18-4714482 >3 signals> GSM # Div of Org Pharm Chem, Mobile: +46 (0)70-4250229 # Box 574, Uppsala University, Fax: +46 (0)18-4714482 #

Backup server
Hi all, I've built a new backup server for our linux-clients. Is Amanda the way to go for a backup-solution? It seems to be pretty powerful, if a bit finickety to set up initially. The way we currently do backups is to use rsync from the clients to two folders on an older server that rolls over every other week. This worked fine for a while, but the rsync is cumulative and the users

CentOS 7 1708 won't boot after grub2 update
Hi all, This is the third fresh install of CentOS 7 1708 the last two months that won't boot after a regular "yum update" just after the fresh install has finished. I've never had this problem before, it has just worked. The installs are on OEM's that have previously run CentOS 6.9 x64. Am I missing something here? -- BW, Sorin

Web photo gallery options
Hi all, I'm looking for a web photo gallery for my personal web server at home. Till now I've done the galleries manually from Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I feel that is a dead end, kinda', besides the fact that the galleries created are rather static. I'd like an easier way to do this, eg uploading images in folders directly to the gallery and it will take care of what needs to

Yum segmentation fault when updating to CentOS v5.5
Hi all, I'm getting a segmentation fault with yum when I try to update a CentOS v5.4 install to v5.5. What I've done: * Ran yum clean all. * Ran yum update yum* * Ran yum update, and got the segmentation fault. * Yum suggested running with option --skip-broken, which I did. Still got the segmentation fault. * Rebooted machine and ran yum update again. Segmentation fault... * Googled

Ext4 on CentOS 5.5 x64
Hi all, For those of you that have been using the ext4 technology preview on CentOS 5.5, how has it panned out? Does it perform as expected? How do you feel the stability, creation of the FS and the administration of it is? Ideas and comments welcome. Thanks. -- BW, Sorin ----------------------------------------------------------- # Sorin Srbu [Sysadmin, Systems Engineer] # Dept of Medicinal

DKMS and new(er) Nvidia-drivers
I got the DKMS-system working and now have the Nvidia-drivers v173.08 installed (using rpmforge as suggested previously). Unfortunately this particular driver version gives me screen artifacts so as to make the screen more or less unreadable. Nvidia's proprietary drivers are now up to v180.44 and this version is fine with my test system. I really like the DKMS-system, as it enables me

Dual-boot with WinXP, CentOS already installed
Hi all, I'd like to deploy a solution with dual-booting systems where CentOS 5.3 is already installed and WinXP will be installed to a separate disk. I found http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_linux_and_windows_xp_linux_installed_first.htm?page=1 and it seems straight forward enough, although the description is for Ubuntu. The problem as I see it, is that the how-to differs from how

NIS or not?
Hi all, We're getting to a point in our linux environment where it's starting to be cumbersome to keep shadow and passwd-files up-to-date for the users to login on each computer. Scripts can only get us so far. 8-/ I've looked a bit into central login systems for linux, and NIS and LDAP seem to be prevalent. NIS being the simpler-to-setup solution for small to medium networks as

OT: Blank mails from this list
Hi all, I apologise for this off-topic question, but wanted to hear from a third-party as well. Recently, like the last week or so, I've started getting blank emails from this list. Blank as in no message text is visible in the email. If I do a ctrl-A however, something does get marked. Evidently there is a message, just not visible. This particular list is the only one I've noticed

Clonezilla SE with CentOS5
Hi all, I'm looking for a cloning solution for our Windows/Linux/*nix computer park and ran into Clonezilla. Apparantely the DRBL and other documentation mentions CentOS as a suitable base for it. Does anybody on this list use this solution and can say something about it in the running-Clonezilla-with-CentOS-context, be it recommendations, gotchas', warnings or whatever? Thanks. -- BW,

Third-party SATA-RAID cards suggestions
Hi all, Would anybody care to suggest a third party SATA-RAID card that works out of the box with CentOS 6, without having to jump through hoops to make it work? The card should preferably be able to connect ten harddrives, but I guess three four-port cards should work as well. There's no need for anything fancy really, as long as I can create a single big software-raid on it at CentOS

Google Chrome and CentOS 6?
Hi all, Just recently I started getting the dreaded message about my CentOS 6.7 x64-installation wasn't going to be supported anymore by Google Chrome. Backuppc-updates on CentOS
Hi all, I installed BackupPC on one of my Centos 5.4-machines following the wiki at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BackupPC#head-725ed151d366bcf182cea92f765c373900cfc9dc, where BackupPC is installed from the c5-testing repo. root at mach012 ~/ [0]# rpm -qa backuppc backuppc-3.1.0-1.el5.centos root at mach012 ~/ [0]# Seeing how there's been some updates to BackupPC in the near past, I

[OT] Building a new backup server
Guys, I was thrown a cheap OEM-server with a 120 GB SSD and 10 x 4 TB SATA-disks for the data-backup to build a backup server. It's built around an Asus Z87-A that seems to have problems with anything Linux unfortunately. Anyway, BackupPC is my preferred backup-solution, so I went ahead to install another favourite, CentOS 6.4 - and failed. The raid controller is a Highpoint RocketRAID

"Shortcut" for creating a software RAID 60?
Hello all, Testing stuff virtually over here before taking it to the physical servers. I found a shortcut for creating a software RAID 10 ("--level=10"), device in CentOS 6. Looking at the below, I don't see anything about a shortcut for RAID 60. https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/htm l/Storage_Administration_Guide/s1-raid-levels.html Is RAID

Kernel panic on 6.8 release with kernel-2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64
Hi all, Just tested the new CentOS 6.8 release on a few VMs and a physical box and got a kernel panic. Is it just me, or anybody else as well? Just fishing for now, will look into the issue more thoroughly later today. -- BW, Sorin ----------------------------------------------------------- # Sorin Srbu, Sysadmin # Uppsala University # Dept of Medicinal Chemistry # Div of Org Pharm Chem #

Setting up sendmail to mail system messages on CentOS 6 and 7
Hi all, I've previously configured sendmail to send system messages on selected servers running CentOS 6. Usually they just kinda' work out of the box. No problems to speak of. However most of my CentOS 7-servers are rather flakey when it comes to sendmail. Most of the time they just won't send mails for whatever reason. Further, most of the time I can get it working, it's

Yum weirdness
Hi all, Running CentOS 5.2 x86. Tried to do a yum update on the command line a while ago and an error stating "No module named yum" popped up. I then tried importing the yum module by first entering "python" in a terminal window and then "import yum", for which I was rewarded with a "ImportError: No module named yum". Then I downloaded a yum
