Any difference in cbind() b/w SPLus and R??
Dear Experts,
I have a data object named "data.char".

Search and extract string function
Hi all,
I'm trying to write a function that will search and extract from a long
character string, but with a twist: I want to use the characters before and
the characters after what I want to extract as reference points. For
example, say I'm working with data entries that looks like this:
Drink=Coffee:Location=Office:Time=Morning:Market=Flat

X11 not available
Hi All,
After compiling R-1.7.1 on a P4 running a default install of redHat 9
(which of course has X11), I get the following error:
> x11()
Error in x11() : X11 is not available
This is surprising, because in ./configure I gave:
./configure \
--enable-R-shlib \
--with-x \
--with-lapack \
--with-gnome
Any idea why this is happening? It also occurs if i install the rpm from
CRAN...
Thanks a

png support
Hi all,
It's me again with compiling questions :)
Even though I have libpng and zlib:
rpm -q libpng
libpng-1.2.2-8
and
rpm -q zlib
zlib-1.1.4-8.8x
my newly-compiled R doesn't support png.
> No png support in this version of R
Anyone knows why?
Thanks,
-Jose

postscript (eps) / latex / par(mfg=...) / problem!
The same problem I am having has been reported here
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/devel/04a/0344.html
Namely that using par(mfg=...) with a postscript (eps) for inclusion with
latex makes the figure appear upside down and back to front (flipped)!
Converting the dvi to ps makes matters worse (the eps seems to be broken),
however, it appears fine with gv.
Here is (basically) the code I am
