Migrating from VMWare Workstation
Dear virt list
I have some virtual machines running on my notebook under VMWare 6.5.2
64 bit that I would like to move to a current 64 bit CentOS 5.3 machine
with a current Intel Xeon processor. The virtual machines do use the
GUI, e.g. they are not text only.
Is it better to use VMware server or Xen?
If using Xen, do I have to convert the images?
Regards,
Peter

Random server reboot after update to CentOS 5.3
Dear ML
We upgraded a Dell Poweredge PE 1950 Server the 8th of May. Since then
the server rebooted 3 times without external cause (it is located in a
server farm with redundant power supply etc.). Looking at the servers
monitoring infrastructure with Dell's own OpenManage tools, I get
strange errors:

Status of PostgreSQL and PHP in Testing
Dear CentOS developers
I would like to have ask some questions about the PostgreSQL and PHP
packages in the current Testing repository for CentOS 5.
In http://wiki.centos.org/QaWiki/TestingRepo there is a note, that the
testing period is about 3 weeks. Currently, the PostgreSQL and PHP
packages in http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/testing/SRPMS were created in
September 08.

I've searched the archives and found a post last march about a rpm version

Any news about it?
Is it still in testing?
Any known issues?
Where do I get it?
Thanks.

Problems compiling PostgreSQL package from FC8 on CentOS 5
Dear CentOS list
we are a small software company making mostly web driven GIS software.
We started to simplify out sysadmin life making RPM packages of most of
the GIS software stack. For a dependency issue we had to abandon the
upstream 8.1 PostgreSQL and install at least a 8.2 version. Taking the
package from Fedora 8 and rebuilding it for x86_64 went smoothly.
Unfortunatly the same is

Installation on a Macbook Pro with nVidia MCP89 SATA controller
Did anybody succeed in installing CentOS on a MacBook Pro with nVidia
chipset (2010 edition,

When I boot with the current minimal install disk, Linux does simply see

CentOS, PHP, Basic GIS
I have no experience with GIS whatsoever. I really know squat about it.
I'm currently working on a project to plot locality data for wildlife on
a map of Shasta County. This is for a new herpetological club that hopes
to track strength of our local herp populations, since it seems evident
that in the last 20 years we lost one species of frog and are close to
losing another (probably less

which programming language for server-side admin tasks
Hi,
I would like to spend some time learning a new coding language, but
specifically for server side admin stuff, i.e. setting up users / databases
/ FTP accounts / virtual domains on Apache, etc.
I already know PHP, but realize it's not quite suited for this kind of
admin, and I suppose I need to look @ PERL / Python / C++ / Ruby? / others?
Can someone give me some pointers on this?

PHP and PHP53
Greetings,
We have someone requesting the use of Wordpress 3.3.1. It requires PHP 5.2
minimum.
Currently, our machine is running CentOS 5.7.
What are the issues/concerns in upgrading from PHP 5.1 (the current PHP
rpms) to PHP53?
Much thanks,

Who's eating our bandwidth?
Hi,
I've recently setup a new server for our public libraries. For the last
two years, this has been my first "big" job, since it involves
networking eleven small to medium size public libraries.
There was a hiccup some time ago when the administration hiring me
wanted to do it on their own, but it took them less than two weeks to
get the server hacked and lose everything. So

Bug#706233: Incorrect information about xm dump-core and pausing or not pausing in xm man page
Package: xen-utils-common
Version: 4.1.4-2
Severity: normal
Hi,
During some research I encountered incorrect information in the man page
of xm, about the dump-core functionality:
The man page says: "Defaults to dumping the core without pausing the
domain if no I<OPTIONS> are specified."
When taking a look at the source code of this process, the default

'pausing' in R
I have this 'odd' problem; I need to let R pause, for a given time, before
starting next iteration in a loop. I'm using the following to do this
task, but feel a little bit guilty because I'm using as much CPU time as I
can get while pausing:
while(keepGoing) {
t.end <- proc.time()[3] + 5 ## the time this loop should end at
[block of R commands]
while(proc.time()[3]

Intel Atom systems?
Any comments on CentOS 5 on Intel Atom CPUs?
I need to build a couple of inexpensive systems that will be used
primarily as gateway/firewall systems with OpenVPN, and need
recommendations in reliable hardware platforms. These will need
two NICs.

Re: pausing a program
R:
I have a program that runs a For loop for days and I need to (if possible)
pause the program. Any ideas on how to do that? If I use stop, how
certain can I be that all the statements executed in the previous
iteration of the for loop?

Pausing processing into an interactive session
Hi all,
As a possibly silly request, is it possible to interactively pause a
R-calculation and do a browser(), say, without browser or other debug
handlers being explicitly included in the code?
Imagine the following situation:
You write up a big calculation for R to calculate. We are talking
hours here, or worse. A few hours into the calculation, you decide
that you want to check on how

Pausing R
Hello,
I?m currently running a script that takes several days to complete, and
have therefore chosen to start two instances of R, each doing half the
work (since I have a two-processor machine). The problem is that this
renders my computer worthless to do other work on. So - is it possible
to pause one of the running R instances to do other things for a while,
and then starting it again

Pausing calculations for a fixed amount of time
Is there any way to pause R for a gvien time period, i.e. without the
need for user intervention? I've got a loop that I want to have work
as hard as it can as long as there is data coming in, but when there
is no new data, I would like it to pause before checking again.
Something like in the following construction:
Set up environment: load libraries, establish database connections, etc.
