B-spline/smooth.basis derivative matrices
Hello, I've noticed that SPLUS seems to have a function for evaluating derivative matrices of splines. I've found the R function that evaluates matrices from 'smooth.spline'; maybe someone has written something to do the same with smooth.basis? regards, s

M-Splines design matrix
Hi Can any one inform me an r package used to fit Cubic M-splines or r functions used to have design and penalty matrices in fitting cubic  M-splines please? Thanks, Tigist [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

smooth.spline
I like what smooth.spline does but I am unclear on the output. I can see from the documentation that there are fit.coef but I am unclear what those coeficients are applied to.With spline I understand the "noraml" coefficients applied to a cubic polynomial. But these coefficients I am not sure how to interpret. If I had a description of the algorithm maybe I could figure it out but as it

spline.des
Hello, I am using library fda and I can not run a lot of functions because I receive the error: Error in bsplineS(evalarg, breaks, norder, nderiv) : couldn't find function "spline.des" do you know how I can fix that? Thnaks. Liliana

estimation of ode from data
Hello, I'm used to working with R in estimation of distributions and statistical models. I'd like to estimate a simple model of an output y(t) based on a concentration as independent variable, using a timed series of experimental data; I've seen this I think somewhere in R? I'd appreciate to hear if anybody has used this with success. regards, S

Taking the derivative of a quadratic B-spline
Hello, I have been trying to take the derivative of a quadratic B-spline obtained by using the COBS library. What I would like to do is similar to what one can do by using fit<-smooth.spline(cdf) xx<-seq(-10,10,.1) predict(fit, xx, deriv = 1) The goal is to fit the spline to data that is approximating a cumulative distribution function (e.g. in my example, cdf is a 2-column matrix with x

How to estimate confidential intervals for the derivatives of cubic smoothing spline
Dear all, I want to use smooth.spline to construct a cubic smoothing spline and its first derivative to my data. However, the predict.smooth.spline does not seem to provide a SE for both the fitted values and their derivatives. How should I calculate it? Thank you very much, Bingzhang

How to generate natural cubic spline in R?
Suppose I have two var x and y,now I want to fits a natural cubic spline in x to y,at the same time create new var containing the smoothed values of y. How can I get it?

Selecting derivative order penalty for thin plate spline regression (GAM - mgcv)
Hi, I am using GAMs (package mgcv) to smooth event rates in a penalized regression setting and I was wondering if/how one can select the order of the derivative penalty. For my particular problem the order of the penalty (parameter "m" inside the "s" terms of the formula argument) appears to have a larger effect on the AIC/deviance of the estimated model than the

Derivative of a splinefun function.
Is there a way of calculating the derivative of a function returned by splinefun()? Such a function is a cubic spline, whence it has a calculable derivative, but is there a (simple) way of getting at it? One workaround that I have thought of is to take a fine grid of points, evaluate the function returned by splinefun() at these points, put an interpolating spline through these points using

bug in spline()? (PR#653)
BUG IN SPLINE()? Version R-1.0.1, system i486,linux If the spline(x,y,method="natural") function is given values outside the range of the data, it does not give a warning. Moreover, the extrapolated value reported is not the ordinate of the natural spline defined by (x,y). Example. Let x <- c(2,5,8,10) and y <- c(1.2266,-1.7606,-0.5051,1.0390). Then interpolate/extrapolate with

cubic spline smoothers with heterogeneous variances
Hello. I have data (plant weights over time) that are non-linear and in which the variance increases over time. I have to estimate the first derivatives of plant weight given time (i.e. growth rate) and their se, using a regression smoother, and I have been considering cubic spline smoothers. However, I do not know if this can be done given that the error variance would increase over time.

stochastic models for population growth
Hello, Having measured two populations' characteristics at one particular time[with great precision] with R, I would like to extend this to measuring the same populations starting at t1, and then again at t2, and try to develop a growth model (something like dpop1/dt=r*pop^(...),dpop2/dt=r*pop^(...)). I think the idea is to create a model that will predict the growth of a population(N(mu,

how to evaluate a cubic Bezier curve (B-spline?) given the four control points
I'm trying to use R to determine the quality of a cubic Bezier curve approximation of an elliptical arc. I know the four control points and I want to compute (x,y) coordinates of many points on the curve. I can't find anything in either the base distribution or CRAN that does this; all the spline-related packages seem to be about *fitting* piecewise Bezier curves to a data set.

Smoothing a path in 2D
Hello, I'm currently trying to find a method to interpolate or smooth data that represent a trajectory in space. For example, I have an ordered (=time) set of (x,y) tuples which constitute a path in a 2D space. Is there a way using R to interpolate between these points in a way similar to spline interpolation so that I get a smooth path in space? Greetings, Dieter -- Dieter Vanderelst

Impose constraint on first order derivative at a point for cubic smoothing spline
Hello,        Dr. Simon Wood told me how to force a cubic spline passing through a point. The code is as following. Anyone  who knows how I can change the code to force the first derivative to be certain value. For example, the first derivative of the constrained cubic spline equals 2 at point (0, 0.6).        I really appreciate your help!        Thanks!                 Best             Victor

cubic spline
Hallo, I'm facing a problem and I would really appreciate your support. I have to translate some Matalb code in R that I don't know very well but I would like to. I have to interpolate 5 point with a cubic spline function and then I expect my function returns the Y value as output a specific X value inside the evaluation range. Let's suppose that: 1- *X = [-10, -5, 0, 5, 10]* 2
