progress of sound update -- REVISED
Change -- The program I test with is Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Yesterday's Ubuntu updates produced a rash of pulseaudio changes, and suddenly alsa works with wine, without stumbling. Today's secret to making it work: In System/Preferences/Startup applications, uncheck pulseaudio sudo apt-get install esound sudo nano /etc/pulse/client.conf autospawn = no Then every time your computer

No Sound in Wine - disable / remove pulseaudio
Wine requires direct access to sound device(s) to make sound. This is true for both ALSA and OSS driver back-ends. However most sound servers are not compatible with neither of these back-ends. This also true about pulse-audio - it is not fully compatible with Wine. If you using new distro (Fedora 8, Ubuntu 8.04, SuSE 11) and do not have sound you should: 1. Report problem to your distro support

Possible recent bug disables sound in wine - Ubuntu Studio
I have sound problems in Ubuntu Studio, starting yesterday. These may be caused by a Ubuntu bug, but I wanted to run them by wine users and see if anyone else is having a similar problem. My configuration: I use Ubuntu Studio. I installed it clean this morning, with default options. Then I purged pulseaudio (because pulseaudio does not work with wine) asoundconf list shows the following

Pulse audo in 1.3.25+
So I used to use the winepulse patch for wine. (Yes I like pulse). But since 1.3.25+ uses mmdevapi for audio, that patch no longer works. That author points to a wine multimedia git, however, after installing that I have no more sound in any wine application, and the winecfg test audio says audio failed. How do I get this new sound server working in wine? -- Sincerely, MacNean C. Tyrrell

Sound Randomly stops while playing The Sims 3
While in game the sound randomly stops, I then have to kill the pulseaudio in order to fix the issue. I'm using the Wine 1.4 RC5 package on Linux Mint 12 (Lisa).

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies
Hey Y'all, Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted. I've had issues related to Repo Forge

FYI -- Just to let you know of potential sound problems
I have the latest version of Ubuntu Studio (Karmic) and just re-installed it today. I use non-pulse applications, including Audacity and Dragon NaturallySpeaking running under wine. I have tried disabling pulseaudio every way I know how. I am getting no sound, mostly due to what are described as timeout errors. Ubuntu has been working to make it run with pulseaudio properly disabled, so that

Wine 1.3.25 kills sound with PulseAudio
In version 1.3.24 and previous versions, sound was hit-and-miss on my system unless I had ESD enabled. Now that ESD has been removed, so has any reliable sound. When using the ALSA driver, some sounds work for a while, after which all sound completely stops. Enabling ESD and using the PulseAudio eSound plugin made all sounds work perfectly. That is now gone with version 1.3.25, and sound is now

Wine USB sound is OSS only?
I have a USB soundcard that I have tried to run with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It doesn't work unless I set winecfg to oss instead of alsa. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? How do I get alsa over USB? Thanks, Susan Cragin

None of the audio drivers seem to work.
I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron with a newly installed Wine 1.0.0. When I go into the Audio tab in winecfg and "test sound", it always comes up with a message saying "Audio test failed!" The other thing is that when I run GTA: San Andreas, it comes up with a message saying that it couldn't find an audio card so it doesn't run. Has anyone else had this problem? Any

I have a new development box at home that I am working on. Currently it has CentOS 5.1 + Xen 3.2 running several domUs. I am using XDMCP on the domUs and an X Chooser on dom0 for connecting to them and it works well, but now I want to be able to get sound from my domUs and I have been struggling. Foobar 2000 and Wine: terrible sound problem.
Hi, I am new here. Ever since I use Ubuntu Linux I've used Wine. This worked nice until version 1.3.x; 1.3.7, I believe. Now I cannot play music anymore with Foobar2000 and the new version of Wine. The problem is that the sound is very distorted every now and then and it even stops sometimes. Initially I've done some tests with Pulse Audio disabled because according to some users that

No sound using OSS in Steam games
Whenever I change the sound driver from ALSA to OSS in winecfg all of my steam games are muted. Some of the games doesn't even start, some of them start but are totally silent with OSS. I installed a couple of non-steam games into the same wineprefix, interestingly they can use both sound systems. So this issue is applied only to steam games. If I apply the WINEDEBUG=+dsound parameter when

No sound in wine with Ubuntu 10.10, native sound works fine
Hello, i am a new Linux user as of last weekend. I successfully built my first computer and installed Ubuntu 10.10 and wine 1.2. I am using the hdmi out on my nvidia gtx 460 graphics card with on-board which works fine with standard pulseaudio for all tested native apps (system sounds, hulu on firefox, warzone 2100). I have tried every combination of winecfg audio tab settings as well as

wine 1.3.28 sound issues
Hello, After upgrading wine from 1.3.27 -> 1.3.28 I found I got no sound when a different application (which uses the sound) is running in the background. Workaround for me is to kill all sound, load up the wine application and alt+tab back to start a non wine application. It's not optimal but a workaround. But I would like to understand why this is happening. Why wine could somehow not
