X11 display problem
Hi, I run R on a unix server and login from a Mac with ssh -X. When I want to run a graphics function like hist, I get the following x11 message: Error in X11(d$display, d$width, d$height, d$pointsize, d$gamma, d$colortype,  :    unable to start device X11cairo In addition: Warning message: In function (display = "", width, height, pointsize, gamma, bg,  :   unable to open connection to

hist, lines, rug
Hello, I'm trying to plot a historgram with a density plot superimposed: hist(x, seq(-1, 1, by = 0.1), prob = T, col = "blue") lines(density(x, bw = 0.1)) rug(x) I don't want to add rug(x) but the histogram will not be plotted unless rug(x) is there. It does not work if the "hist" line alone is present. Can you help? Thanks, Kim [[alternative HTML version

breaks in hist()
Dear listers, A quick question about breaks in hist(). The histogram is highly screwed to the right, say, the range of the vector is [0, 2], but 95% of the value is squeezed in the interval (0.01, 0.2). My question is : how to set the breaks then make the histogram look even? Thanks in advance, Leaf

tapply histogram
Dear members, I would like to pass the histogram settings to each subset of the dataframe, and generate a multiple figures graph. First, can anyone tell me how to generate a multiple figures environment? I am trying mfrow=c(2,4) and nothing appears. Secondly, I want to pass the following function in tapply() hist(x, freq=FALSE) lines(density(x), col="red") rug(x) how can I manage

Fw: Re: title problem
It seems that there is a problem in displaying subtitle in general, independently from multi-plot display. when I do plot (c(1,2,3), c(9,8,7), type = "l") title(main = "Main title", sub ="Sub title",cex.main=2, cex.sub = 2) subtitle doesn't get displayed > --- On Sat, 11/21/09, David Winsemius <dwinsemius at comcast.net> > wrote: >

hist (PR#2512)
The command hist(c(2,2,2,4,5,6)) returns a histogram that looks incorrect -- 3 in the bin labeled 2 on the left, but 1 each in the bins labeled 3,4,5 on the left. Thanks! Determining the break points by hist() leads to errors (PR#2432)
Hi, if I dermine the break points using the hist() function and then try to re-use these in a new histogram, R fails. Here is an example of the problem: ##First, plot a histogram: data(islands) foo <- hist(islands,freq=T) ##Now, try plot it again, with the previously determined break points: hist(islands,breaks=foo$breaks,freq=T) ##... this lead to the warning message: Warning message:

breaks in hist()
I was using the hist() function to create a frequency table of some network traffic data. The range in values is rather large, from 0 till just under 10e12. Calling hist(x, breaks=c(0,1000,1e6,1e9,1e12),plot=F,freq=T) causes hist() to return : $breaks [1] -1.0000e+05 1.0100e+05 1.1000e+06 1.0001e+09 1.0000e+12 Is this recalculation of the breaks by hist() intended? No error message no display output
Hi all, I´m re-starting (as my name indicates) my little knowlegde of CRAN R. I made this function time before but I don´t know where is the error because nothing appears as an error but the histogram plot doesn´t appear. Should I install some special library to run sapply? pru<-function(){ randz<-matrix(rnorm(200000),100,2000) H<-matrix(0,100,2000) for (j in 2:2000){ for (i in

plot the same types of graphics on the same R graphic device
Hi, How to plot the same types of graphics on the same R graphic device? Suppose that we want to plot a vector y against x (using plot for instance). How is it possible to plot y against x for different values of these two vectors on the same device so that the plots could be compared? Cheers, Carol [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Using logarithmic y-axis (density) in a histogram
Hi, I am searching for a possibility to display a logarithimic y-axis in a histogram. With plot that's easy (e.g. plot(1:10, log="y") but for histograms this does not work the same way: I tried hist(rnorm(1000), freq=FALSE, seq(-4, 4, .5), ylim=c(0.001, 0.5), log="y") Which gives the expected histogram but also warnings for my log="y" command

title problem
Hi, I got problem in using title function to create a title for multiple plots presented together by par. As can be seen in the attached file, the title is displayed truncated and the subtitle doesn't get displayed. Here is the code: par(mfrow = c(1,2)) plot(c(1,2,3), c(9,8,7)) plot(c(1,2,3), c(9,8,7)) title(main = "Main title", sub ="Sub title",outer = TRUE,

Ask for histogram
Hi, I use a vector of data to draw the histogram, but it is different from the graph by SAS. Can you check it for me please? b is a column vector of 4332 hist(b,probability=T,breaks=30,col='lightblue',ylim=c(0,1)) rug(b) When I used rug, I find the records are smaller than 4332. I don't know where I did wrong. Thanks. -- Yi Du [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

truehist and density plots
Hi, I wanted to plot the histogram of a vector and then, plot the density function of subsets of the vector on the histogram. So I use truehist in MASS package and lines(density) as follows: length(b) = 1000 truehist(b) lines(density(b[1:100])) however the density plot of the first 100 points exceeds the max of y axis (see attached). how is it possible to make a graphics so that the density plot

Graphical Display of Values' Distribution
Dear all, I have a column within a dataframe of values which range between 1 and 2. I want to display graphically the distribution of these values (i.e. are they clustered towards either exteme? Or spread evenly?). What is a good way of doing this in R? I've tried a few things, including using the 'hist' command, but receive the following error message: > hist(urban.long[3])

hist() and density
There were some questions about hist() a couple of days ago which triggered this post. My question/suggestion is about the y-axis in hist. There are reasons to prefer making the y-axis density=relative frequency/bin width. One reason is that the height of the plot does not depend on the bin width; another is that if your histogram is in density then you can easily superimpose a smooth theoretical
