dhcp + static dns
Hi all, Not having issues setting this in Ubuntu or Windows but I cannot seem to add a static DNS or search path without it getting over written when networks restarts. The file dhclient.conf seems ignored. I would like to simply have a fixed DNS and search path added to what ever was found by the dhcp client. So I don't think peersdns=no is an option. Any advice is greatly

ip command
Hi all, I have this network: 10.1.20.0 - 10.1.23.0 /22 Broadcast 10.1.23.255 Say I have a machine with IP: 192.168.1.1 Now, I want to create virtual IP on it with ip command: 1. Is this ok? ip addr add 10.1.22.100/22 dev eth0:1 2. Should I define the broadcast too in the above command? If I don't define it, will the above command means the broadcast would be 10.1.25.255? Thank you. Fajar.

question for those who run mail servers
Not technically a centos question, but a lot of you guys seem to manage some large systems and I could use some clarification on a postfix setting.* *reject_unknown_client_hostname (in postfix < 2.3 reject_unknown_client) When I first used this there were issues with users trying to send mail through the server from hotels, wireless spots, etc. This was solved by pushing up permit

Where is source address info of a route kept?
I have an ethernet device in my lan with a primary address 192.168.5.205 and a secondary address .217. I added the secondary address after network startup established the primary address by an ip addr add command: # ip addr add 192.168.5.217/24 broadcast 192.168.5.255 dev eth0 # ip addr show ... 2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000 link/ether

Removing LVM
I have a CentOS 5 machine in which I'm trying to remove lvm. I dd'ed the file system to another partition, then dd'ed it back overwriting the lvm partition. I then modified menu.lst and fstab and replaced the paths to point to the correct device. When the system boots it's still looking for lvm. I can restore the system back to where it was with lvm, but I'm not sure what

Help with smartd
I have a system that is logging: smartd /dev/sda currently unreadble (pending) sectors smartd /dev/sda offline uncorrectable sectors The box continues to run fine. Doing "smartctl -H /dev/sda" says: test result: PASSED I have ran the "smartctl -t offline /dev/sda", after the 300+ seconds I rebooted and waited about 30 minutes and again got the above error, and smartctl -H

smartd and 3ware 9xxx configs
I'm looking to do a bit more monitoring of my 3ware 9550 with smartd, and wanted to see what others were doing with smart for monitoring 3ware hardware. Do you have the smartd.conf configured to test, or simply monitor health status? Are you monitoring the drive as centos sees it (/dev/sdX) or are you using the 3ware /dev/twaX for monitoring? Opinions and discussions are welcome :-P --

Disk near failure

Since your disk apparently does not store an error log - not sure if that's something with SSDs in general or just with this particular disk - you will always have to invoke

tracing the source of a sector error from smartd
I'm not used to using smartd, but have a new set of systems that don't have any sort of RAID on them, so I enabled smartd (18 systems 4 SATA drives each). Running CentOS 5.4 64-bit .. One of them has emailed me twice(despite it saying it would only email me once) saying it has 1 Offline uncorrectable sectors But when I try to find more information, smartctl seems to think everything is

Alarming (?) smartd reports
I decided, after the last discussion of smartd and S.M.A.R.T. disks, to take a look in my /var/log/messages, and I'm seeing fair bit of this: Sep 10 20:11:23 mhrichter smartd[3361]: Device: /dev/sda, 4294967295 Offline uncorrectable sectors Sep 10 20:41:23 mhrichter smartd[3361]: Device: /dev/hdb, 21 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Sep 10 20:41:24 mhrichter smartd[3361]: Device:

A strange situation with MegaCli64 and smartctl
We have a system - it's C 7 - that a while back lost three drives of a large array. The other admin here replaced the failed drives, but never went through the MegaRAID replace series of commands. I've just brought it back up and put a new filesystem on it, but here's what's odd: if I do smartctl -a -d megaraid,x /dev/sda, where x=drive number, for all the other drives, I get

smartctl question
I had a drive failing on a server. I've replaced it. The old drive was /dev/sdb; the new one's /dev/sdd. The manpage and googling are failing me - anyone know how to tell smartd to stop trying to read /dev/sdb (which I've pulled, and is sitting here on my desk)? I don't need the garbage in the logs, and no, I can't just reboot the server, since it's a home directory

Software RAID1 Failure Help
I am running software RAID1 on a somewhat critical server. Today I noticed one drive is giving errors. Good thing I had RAID. I planned on upgrading this server in next month or so. Just wandering if there was an easy way to fix this to avoid rushing the upgrade? Having a single drive is slowing down reads as well, I think. Thanks.
