network problems
We just moved a user, who deals with a *lot* of data, to a new server,
since his old NFS home directory was on a disk that had started showing
problems.
Now, i/o is about six times slower, my manager reports.
After a fair bit of googling, I started looking at tc and ip, and found
the following: from ip address show, first, on the old home directory
server,
eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu

looking for a package
I'm trying to update a workstation, and it wants to update mpeg2-utils.
But that has a dependency of libmpeg2-0.5.1-3, for i386. epel doesn't have
it, and I tried looking on rpmfusion.org, and I can only find a very few
packages there. Anyone have an idea which of the regular repositories
carries libmpeg2?

Simplifying making a USB install key
Ok, where/how do I submit this to the CentOS project?
Here's a complete script - anyone, *please* feel free to test it, and let
me know if I've missed anything.
Thanks in advance.

USB keys
Well, we wanted to put an install on a USB key. Neither I nor the other
admin was amused by the singing and dancing that the wiki offers - and
just *why* is it that syslinux is broken?
At any rate, I did some googling, and found
<http://www.pendrivelinux.com/>, and I ran this installer.
Ok, it has some bugs: a) I had several .isos, and it *insisted* on
grabbing the first one,

odd ClamAV error
Has anyone recently started seeing
LibClamAV Warning: Cannot prepare for JIT, because it has already been

? I can't find anything googling for that.

Problems with the epel GPG key
I just went to install fail2ban, and it kept failing, complaining about
the EPEL GPG key. It was installed... and yum worked, once I did
ln -s /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-6 /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL
Small problem there....

swap labeling annoyance
I just upgraded a blade server via rsync from another server. Rebuilt the
initrd. It boots fine... except that it won't turn on the swap partition.
Several times, I've made sure swap was off, then mkswap -L SWAP-sda3
/dev/sda3, but when I do swapon -L SWAP-sda3, it complains it can't find
the device for the label.
The only thing I find while googling, other than redoing what I've

CentOS 6 and android connectivity (Nook)
So, I got my wife a Nook for her b'day. I just plugged it into my system,
CentOS 6.5, and what I see is /media/NOOK, and it shows 257k or so - yes,
k, not m or g. It's *not* seeing any directories, etc, and the small thing
I'm guessing is firmware, since even when I try mount -o remount -rw, it
is still r/o.
Googling, I see mentions of fsmtp, I think it was, and yum shows some mtp

CentOS 7, container question
Hi, folks,
We would like to run a container on a server, the reason being the COST
of a Sybase license (it's by core), and what we can afford is a 4-core
license. Now, the server's a nice Dell w/ 32 cores, so, ideally, what
we want to do is set up containers, then, in one container, *only* have
it see 4 cores, while the rest of the server, including (possibly)
other containers, can see

scim-bridge?
Anybody familiar with it, or what it's needed for? I've got at least one
user (it's *very* noticeable with her) whose system is spamming
/var/log/messages, to the effect of "Another agent is running...\nFailed
to allocate the agent. Exitting" (complete with misspelled exiting).
In googling, I've seen someone just removing the package. What, if
anything, would that break?

USB install annoyances
I tried to boot from my 6.0 USB key, no joy. Updated it to 6.2. Still no
joy: it gets started, I do the disk layout, it formats the drives, and
then fails, saying that it can't find "image# 1". Over in the log, I see a
lot of it not finding any drive at all, yet all the h/d drives and sda2,
which is what the USB key is, and where the linux partition is, are
mounted.
Guys, any idea

CUPS and virtual interfaces
I've got a server with multiple virtual interfaces. Now, I only want CUPS
to advertise on *one* - eth0, not eth0:1 or eth0:gad....
Looking at the CUPS manual, and cuppsd.conf man page, I see BrowseAllow,
but the entries are not clear enough for me to understand what they mean.
(Yeah, I know the docs are better than they were - read ESR's rant about
it from a few years ago.)

libmpeg2-utils
Trying to update a user's system, and yum gives up, because it wants to
update libmpeg2, and there's a dependency - the currently installed
version is required by libmpeg2-utils, and there seems to be no update to
that. Anyone have an idea why this is the case? I really don't want to add
another repo just for this workstation, when libmpeg2 does have an update
in its current repos.

Keyboards
On my new Dell system, it's got a cardreader. More to the point, it's got
an idiot menu key... *right* next to the right control key, and just where
the annoying keyboard design has it cut down from the oversize space bar

perl-Sys-Filesystem on 6.0
I'm trying to install a number of perl modules, and yum gives up with
perl-Sys-Filesystem, because it has a dependency of
perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.8.8)
I've tried seeing what provides it, and yum says nothing. I also see,
googling, that there was a problem thread on this list in '08 with the
same dependency. Anyone have a clue, or workaround?

USB install annoyances (not OT)
I've retried again, and it still fails. I see that it's mounted /dev/sda2,
which is where I've got the contents of a DVD, as /mnt/isolinux. The
contents of that are:

picture viewers
Ok, I give up. After the last month or so, gwenview takes literally five
minutes or so to come up, gagging because I have nepomuk turned off in
kde. Today, it just will not come up at all, even trying gwenview pic.jpg.
Are there any other ->light weight<- image viewers in the standard
repositories, including epel? I DO NOT WANT OR NEED a "semantic desktop"

Cent OS 6 freezing up
I've been out of pocket for a while, so don't shoot me, if this has
already been brought up. I'm having a problem with my desktop freezing
up, and I'm running Cent OS 6. It seems to happen while I'm running
firefox. I'm not sure if it's firefox, or the OS that's locking up.
When it freezes up, nothing will respond, so I'm inclined to think it's
