Starting Thinking Sphinx on Joyent SmartOS with svcadm
I followed this tutorial: http://www.neo.com/2013/10/09/unicorn-on-joyent-smartos and the RailsCast about configuring Nginx and Unicorn, and successfully set up my first non-Passenger/Apache Rails app last weekend. Buoyed by this success, I next set about trying to get ThinkingSphinx to restart when the server starts, and managed to get my server to run away with 115% server usage. (Oddly, while

New binary package set for EL6 x86_64
Hi users of EL6 based distributions, I'm pleased to announce a new alternative binary package repository for EL6 x86_64. The aim is to provide a supplemental set of packages which may contain software not included in your base system. These packages are based on pkgsrc, a cross-platform package manager. In this initial release there are 13,152 packages available. For now I am specifically

Anyone running Asterisk on KVM virtual machine under SmartOS?
I'm thinking of condensing some of my boxes down to KVM virtual machines running under SmartOS. My Asterisk box is running Centos 6.4 and I'd like to include it. Is anyone running Asterisk on a virtual machine under SmartOS? Does DAHDI work? Thanks in advance. Frank

What would be the best tutorial cum reference doc for ZFS
as used on Illumos? I''ve seen a few tutorials written by people who obviously are very action oriented; afterwards you find you have worn your keyboard down a bit and not learned a lot at all, at least not in the sense of understanding what zfs is and what it does and why things are the way they are. I''m looking for something that would make me afterwards understand what,

Seeking advice: Backup Exec & Samba shares
Fellow Samba-shakers, I've run into an odd problem, and I'm seeking the advice of anyone who has implemented Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 or 9.0, on an NT 4.0 server platform, to perform backups of NetBSD 1.6x systems via Samba file shares. Said problem did NOT manifest itself until I tried using Samba 3.0.0. I have jumped back to 2.2.8a, since that's the last version that was known to

Perplexing unit test issue
Because we''re now using views, I had to upgrade to mysql 5 on a project using Rails 1.0. Updated my mysql gem accordingly (which required upgrading xcode). Ruby 1.8.2, MacOS X (10.4.6) Worked fine several times (even before updating the mysql gem, then suddenly it just balked and stopped working, giving the spew below. Have also dropped (and recreated) both the test and

densCols: what are the computed densities and how to create a legend
Hi, I'm using the densCols function for a scatterplot and cannot figure out 1) how to extract the computed densities, and 2) how to create a legend based that represents the upper and lower ranges of the densities. For example: movers.den <- densCols(move$x, move$y) table(movers.den) #08306B #083775 #083B7C #083D7E #3989C1 #3F8FC4 28 22 101 25

Cant access home folder after 4.13.x
Hi I've been using Samba from pkgsrc successfully on Illumos, SmartOS specifically until I moved to 4.17.11. When I try to access my home folder on Linux I get, chdir_current_service: vfs_ChDir(/home/fukr/kev) failed: Permission denied. Current token: uid=10000, gid=10001, 3 groups: 10001 10000 10002 My home folder permissions are 700. If I change to 755 it works fine. My the uid, gid are,

Permissions look different from Windows (cygwin & SAMBA) than from Unix
Hi, folks: One of my developers brought a SAMBA/ClearCase permissions issue to my attention for which I have no visibility. Perhaps someone has run across this before, and could enlighten us? We are using ClearCase 5 on SunFire 880 vob servers, SAMBA 2.2. Developer creates file in unix vob, using unix view, from unix machine, testfile_unix_text Developer creates file in unix vob, using unix
