OT: Google Earth - How to uninstall, before installing newest version?
Desktop is CentOS 5.4 (32 bit). I have Google Earth version 4.2.205.5730 (13NOV2007 build date) installed. I have checkinstall (spelling?) installed, but am not sure if that was installed before or after Google Earth was installed. I have the Google Repository installed, but apparently Google Earth cannot be updated via yum and probably it was not installed via yum. Question: What is the best

Help with yum and cpio: MD5 sum mismatch
I am trying to install Ruby-1.8.7p302 on a CentOS-5.5 server in preparation for a Rails-3 application deployment. I have downloaded the source from Rubyforge.org, unpacked it, and ran ./config and make. Everything built without error. I then ran checkinstall to create an rpm package. That too completed without error. However, when I try to install the resulting package using: yum localinstall

Two quick and simple questions; I want to install the "WinPower" software for my new UPS. On their web site, they have a tar.gz file available for download. I know the reasons for staying with RPM, if at all possible. I''ve Googled and Yahood for ""WinPower"+RPM+Linux and get hits, but no obvious RPM. I tried "yum install winpower" and the response was

software installation - good practice
Howdy, I tend to try out many open source apps/packages - games, editors to media tools. I have a bad habit of downloading and extracting source in the /var/tmp directory and then doing configure-make-install process. I am not sure of best practice (good practices) to be followed when installing any software. For example how and where to keep the src. Any comments and/or resources would be really

Uninstall old wine version and install new version
I did a forum search and found 16 pages for uninstalling wine. Only one was semi-helpful. What I got was: > > [Bakshara at Bakshara ~]$ rmdir ~/.wine > rmdir: failed to remove `/home/Bakshara/.wine': Directory not empty > What do I need to do? I want to uninstall wine 1.1.24 and install 1.1.26. I currently only have three apps installed. So any thing I will loose will be easy

I want to install a new version of Wine because the one I installed with apt-get in Debian is quite old and buggy (0.9.25). So after doing "apt-get uninstall wine", I followed this guide (http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb), to install a newer wine version but encountered a few problems: 1. the guide says > Now you can install Wine by clicking this link. How to overcome 32000 subdirs limit
Hi. I have a system storage HP MSA 2012 with 12 drives in it: 8 drives are 2 Tb each and 4 are 1 Tb each. All of them are in array RAID 1+0. This storage is connected to two servers which use data, stored on the storage. So I'm using OCFS2 on these two nodes. Today, after long time of successfull work with it, I've found that it has a limit of 32000 subdirs. The trouble is I have more than

r-base is already the newest version (3.5.2-1bionic)
After a great deal of apparently irrelevant kerfuffle, with which I have been boring this list, I managed to do: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade without getting error messages. I was told that there was nothing to do. I then (to make sure?) did: sudo apt-get install r-base and was told: > r-base is already the newest version (3.5.2-1bionic). > 0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0

installing Adobe Audition creates no exe file...
I'm running Wine 1.1.10, configured as Windows XP, and a version of Ubuntu from four days ago. The appDB says that Adobe Audition 2.0 works fine (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=13422), but I haven't had any success yet. No exe file was installed, audition doesn't show up in wine's list of installed programs, and there's just generally no way to

Upgrading samba from source over debian packages
Hello Marc, Thanks for the fast answer!!! Don't forget to uninstall the packages before running 'make install'. > Otherwise you risk that a Debian update overrides your setup or getting > dependency problems. Maybe, it would be nice to put on the wiki that step regarding uninstall the old packages version. I believe that a good portion of users unaware that step. :) On Tue,

How do you make wine do real uninstalls?
I have tried installing various GPS/topo map software suites on four Fedora machines under wine. On three of them, the install claims to succeed; the suite fails even to launch; I try to uninstall it; the uninstall either admits failure, or pretends to succeed while leaving the software still there and clickable (but, of course, not launchable). On one, I then ran a Fedora search (beagle, I
