Repair grub GPT/UEFI?
What does it take to make a disk bootable on a system with UEFI and a
GPT on the boot disk? I used a default disk layout in the initial
install on a 600Gb drive (on a box that also contained a larger raid).
and it used a GPT.
ReaR won't work to back up/restore this system, complaining about the
UEFI. I cloned the drive to a different server with clonezilla-live
which completed without

Installing CentOS-7 but keeping CentOS-6.5
I'm having trouble installing CentOS-7 on my HP MicroServer.
I've tried with KDE LiveCD and Netinstall (both on USB sticks),
and now I'm going to try with the DVD ISO.
But I want to be quite sure I can return to CentOS-6.5
if things go wrong, so I'm wondering what precisely I need to copy
(eg the MBR and a bit more) so that I could get back to things as they were.
Is this

Make Raid1 2nd disk bootable?
On earlier versions of Centos, I could boot the install CD in rescue
mode, let it find and mount the installed system on the HD even when it
was just one disk of RAID1 partitions (type=FD). When booting from the
centos5 disk the attempt find the system gives a box that says 'You
don't have any Linux partitions'. At the bottom of the screen there is
something that says:

Best way to duplicate a live Centos 5 server?
I've got a CentOS 5 server that I want to migrate over into a
virtualized instance.
The problem is I need to minimize downtime so was trying to figure out
a way to "live" clone the original.
Initially, I thought I could do this via exporting an iSCSI target
from the virtual host, create a MD raid 1 array on the C5 server, wait
for it to sync, then shutdown the physical server and

grub/raid1 on centos4
With Centos3, fedora1/2 I have been able to put /boot on a RAID1
partition and have it boot normally. Unlike earlier versions that
used lilo as the default boot loader, these did not make the 2nd drive
bootable but at least I was fairly confident that if the first drive
failed I could use the install CD in rescue mode to fix up the 2nd one
and go on. However, Centos4 won't boot at all with

rebuild the initial ramdisk to contain the proper kernel modules for the
adaptec controller. But what is the kernel module for

scp copy remote files does NOT copy link?
We have CENTOS 5.3 on DELL servers. I tried to us following command to copy remote files system to local:
scp -rp oracle at ORA2:/home/app/oracle/10.2 .
After SCP finish copy, I found some files on source file system using "link" but on target file systems it change to "physical file".
Does there has way scp not change "link" setup?
Thanks.

Directory Compare
I need to verify some directories of backed up data versus restored data. What would you recommend as the type of comparison to do, and which tool would give the easiest/most usable output?
Thanks!

Cloning CentOS workstations
I manage a set of CentOS operations workstations which are all clones of each
other (3 "live" and 1 "spare" kept powered down); each has a single drive with
four partitions (/boot, /, /home, swap). I've already set up cron'd rsync jobs
to copy the operations accounts between the workstations on a daily basis,
so that when one fails, it is a simple, quick process to swap

Bind Setup
I highly appreciate everyone's help in the caching name server bit.
Building on that one:
Everyone knows my issues that i am having in terms of reverse lookup so
the windows clients won't freak. I have decided to switch focus..as it
seemed to make sense. I am now looking to setup a full DNS server for
my internal network. Everything is actually set statically via DHCP

CentOS 4 Software Raid1 questions
I want to mirror an existing 40GB data only drive using
software Raid1 on my new CentOS 4 server. The existing
drive is connected to a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller
(non-raid). I have read about mdadm and understand how to
create the Raid1 on /dev/mdxx devices. However I would like
to know if the existing data on the orignal 40GB drive in
the system will be destroyed when I create the raid with

Any suggestions?

Slow login to system without internet connection
Hi.
For a long time I am puzzled why, when internet connection is gone
(beyond first router, outside of subnet) SSH (and telnet?) connection is
drastically slowed.
Same behavior, but less impacted is observed when system boots without
working internet connection, and I am not sure, but I think even access
to SAMBA fileshares can be/is affected. Affected systems are mostly
production

ssh and dd
Tonight I have to boot a diskless server with iLO and dd a remote image available by ssh
onto a usb key. As there is no local place to store the image, whats the most efficient
cmd to push the image from the remote server using ssh into the local pipe pushing out
to `dd of=/dev/sdx`?
Would a remote execution of `dd if=/dev/sdx` be the best over ssh? I suppose I could use
nc and do away with ssh,

Odd kernel panic, repeatable
I had an old server die; we had another, same model, sitting around lightly
used, so I did what I've done before: swap the RAID card into that, swap the
drives, even putting them in the same bays as the dead one, and boot.
Nope. 100% of the time, when it hits switching roots, it kernel panics.
Adding rdshell to the kernel line does nothing, I get no grub rdshell. Booting
