Logreturn variance in Heston model
I have to calculate the logreturn variance in the Heston model. How can I do? Do you know some function that calculates it? Thank you Barbara -- ________________________________________________________ Le informazioni contenute in questo messaggio di posta elettronica sono strettamente riservate e indirizzate esclusivamente al destinatario. pulling recessions out of a hydrograph
Dear R community, I'm hoping someone out there has perhaps done this and can share their code and/or expertise with me. I need to pull recession periods out of a hydrograph - can anyone help me with this? I want to create a subset from streamflow data that consists of just the recession curves - the decreasing runoff after the passage of a peak flow. would really appreciate any help on

Error message: object of type 'closure' is not subsettable
Dear R-users I need to calibrate kappa, rho, eta, theta, v0 in the following code, see below. However when I run it, I get: y <- function(kappahat, rhohat, etahat, thetahat, v0hat) {sum(difference(k, t, S0, X, r, implvol, q, kappahat, rhohat, etahat, thetahat, v0hat)^2)} > nlminb(start=list(kappa, rho, eta, theta, v0), objective = y, lower =lb, > upper =ub) Error in dots[[1L]][[1L]] :

Win98 asks for IPC$ password
Hi all, After I converted my Linux desktop from Mandriva 2008.1 with Samba 3.0.28a to Ubuntu 9.04 with Samba 3.3.2, my Windows 98 box could no longer connect to my Linux desktop via Samba. The symptom was that Windows kept asking for the IPC$ password. Linux clients have no problem with the Ubuntu Samba server. My machine is called "mydesk", and on every Linux box in the house, the

Is Samba useful in an all-Linux environment?
Hi all, This isn't meant to be a troll. It's a legitimate question asked because I haven't done much with Samba for 9 years. Is there anything Samba can contribute to an all-Linux environment with no Windows or Mac computers? Upgrade *@home to CVS-HEAD
Hi I installed *@home 0.6 to play with the system, and learn. I tried AMP but didn't like it and so set forth into the conf files manually. I have it all set up how I want, all my extensions work etc. Reading this list and playing in the wiki and google, I get the impression *@home is great for learning, but has a few limitiations. I would like to upgrade my box to the latest stable cvs

printing and samba
I have samba 2.0.5a running on my RH 6.1 linux machine (intel), and it does filesharing for my windows machine on the same network. Recently, I tried to set up printing but have so far been unsucessful. I have the printer set up correclty, because I can print to it from the server, and remotely from other linux machines on my network. Here is the section from my smb.conf file [global] printing =

Problems in Recommending R
Dear List, One persistent feedback I am getting to people who are newly introduced to R ( especially in this cost cutting recession) is - 1) The website looks a bit old. While the current website does have a lot of hard work behind it, should n't a world class statistics package have a better website instead. You can check out www.knime.org which is an open source software , and free, and

Bordeaux 50% off recession busting sale
The Bordeaux Technology Group is proud to announce a 50% off recession busting sale on Bordeaux for Linux, Mac, FreeBSD, PCBSD and OpenIndiana. With the current US unemployment rate hovering near 10% and rumors of the possibility of a double dip recession. How to PXE Boot
Folks, Are there updated instructions on how to set up PXE boot under CentOS 5.x? I found that the system-config-netboot RPM has been absent, and the instructions written reference it, with a bug report not yet closed on Red Hat. Thanks, OSC http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-netboot-pxe-config.html http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2006-0380.html -- Are we headed

Are there equivalents to xblocks or rect that can be used with plot.xts?
I would like to add vertical shaded blocks in plot.xts graphs (like recession periods in FRED graphs) The reason I use plot.xts instead of plot.zoo is that I like the fact that the grid is automatically aligned with major ticks in plot.xts. xblocks() and rect() do not seem to work with plot.xts (only with plot.zoo). Are there any alternative methods that work with plot.xts? Thanks. -- View

out of sample predictions using a probit model
hello all, I am a beginner at R and not exactly a statistician either. I'm messing around with a probit model on an enconomic time series. I can get the model estimated but I have not been able to get it to give me predictions out of sample data. I'm using the predict function but getting errors. Here is my code: #predict a recession 12 months out #k=12 means 12 months forward #dates

Drawing Polygons with xyplot in lattice
Hello: I've come to a dead-end in my search for a solution to a graphing problem that I am encountering. I have used xyplot (from the lattice package) successfully to plot 36 time-series plots (lines) of under-5 mortality for a set of countries in Sub-Sarahan Africa. What I would now like to do is to add vertical bands (rectangles) that correspond to time-periods during which each of the 36

Think I'm sure, but confirm: lme4 vs. nlme
The impression I get from the list and the references I've perused is that nlme is being phased out in favor of lme4, but lme4 still doesn't have a complete feature set yet. What I'm still fuzzy on, being a relative R newbie, is: (a) what features in nlme are currently missing in lme4 (b) what's the projected time frame on getting them implemented. If anyone can answer my naive

How to vectorize a function to handle two vectors
Dear R-users I am trying to "vectorize" a function so that it can handle two vectors of inputs. I want the function to use phi (a function), k[1] and t[1] for the first price, and so on for the second, third and fourth price. I tried to do the mapply, but I dont know how to specify to R what input I want to be vectors (k and t)(see in the bottom what I tried). I have read the help file,

ggplot & annotating charts
Dear "R-listers" I've been trying to figure out how to annotate charts in ggplot (ie add text to line charts, highlighted boxes etc). By and large, I can get close to what i want with base graphics, but would ideally like to use ggplot whenever possible (additionally, i would like to add text labels automatically to the chart). The code is below I suspect I need to use geom_rect,
