changing names of vectors in list or data.frame
When I combine separate vectors into one list, there are new names
created. I'd like to change them to something more meaningful.
Here are two examples using data(zelazo) from library(ISwR):

NEWBIE: Help explaining use of lm()?
I'm attempting the heruclean task of teaching myself Introductory
Statistics and R at the same time. I'm working through Peter Dalgaard's
Introductory Statistics with R, but don't understand why the answer to
one of the exercises works. I'm hoping someone will have the patience to
explain the answer to me, both in the statistics and R areas.
Exercise 6.1 says:

x tick labels - sparse?
Hi,
I'm stuck on creating a plot with x tick labels for every Nth tick
mark - how is that done? I don't see a simple solution to this in
help(plot) or help(par) and what I've tried is not working, eg, the
following does not work, although it seems intuitive to me that it
should work:
x <- seq(-100,1000,25)
y <- x * x
% find all the x values that are multiples of 100

anova subhypotheses
Hello all,
A really noddy question for you all: I''m trying without success to do some subhypothesis testing. Using simple anova model, with a toy dataset from a book. I have four factors A,B,C,D, and wish to test mu_C = mu_D. This is what I have tried:
> contrasts(infants$group,how.many=1) <- c(0,0,1,-1)
> contrasts(infants$group)

A performance anomaly
I wrote a simple log likelihood (for the ordinary least squares (OLS)
model), in two ways. The first works out the likelihood. The second
merely calls the first, but after transforming the variance parameter,
so as to allow an unconstrained maximisation. So the second suffers a
slight cost for one exp() and then it pays the cost of calling the first.
I did performance measurement. One would

Changing selected elements of an array
Hi!
I have a matrix defined on geographical positions (through) row and column
names. I need to change a number of elements in this matrix using the
information of a data.frame containing geographical positions and a number of
variables.
Changing the value of one specific element is easy, but changing on a number
of selected positions seems more difficult. When I use the geographical

how do I do the autocovariance of a moving average?
Hi guys,
I'm trying to do the autocovariance of a moving average but it's giving me
errors. Here is my code:
> w=rnorm(500,0,1)
> v=filter(w, sides=2, rep(1/3,3))
> acf(w, lag.max=20) <=that printed out a nice graph.
> acf(v, lag.max=20)
Error in na.fail.default(as.ts(x)) : missing values in object
thanks a lot.

aggrete data from combination
Dear R users,
A have a dataframe (matrix) with two collumns (plot, and diameter (d)). I
want all diameters values for different combination of plots.
For example I want all d values for all posible combination, 100C2 (all d
values for plot 1 with all d values in the plot 2.......with all d values
from plot 1 with all d values from plot 100, ...... with all d values from
plot 99 with all d values

Hi Kelly,
Try running 'iostat -xdmc 1'. Look for a single drive that has
substantially greater await than ~10msec. If all the drives
except one are taking 6-8msec, but one is very

Cannot get "==" operator to return TRUE
I have a data.frame named "df". The dput of df is at the bottom of this e-mail.
What I'd like to do is replace the "n/a " values with NA. On Mac OSX, it works
to do this:
df[df == "n/a"] <- NA
However, it does not work on Ubuntu. See below.
Thanks in advance,

Split plot analysis problems
Hello,
I would be very grateful if someone could give me a hand with my split
plot design problems.
So here is my design :
I am studying the crossed-effects of water (wet/dry) and mowing
(mowed/not-mowed = nm) on plant height (PH) within 2 types of plant
communities (Xerobromion and Mesobromion) :
- Within each type of communities, I have localised 4 blocks
- In each block, I have defined

changing cex pointwise in lattice
Dear R-users,
I have tried, and I imagine it should be somewhere in the lines of passing extra arguments to the panel function, but does anyone know how to change the character expansion factor that is affecting an individual point in each of the panels of a lattice plot?
I have tried to pass an overall cex argument containing the desired size for each point, but then the sizes are reused for the

reliability, scale scores in the psych package
Dear Professor Revelle and R-helpers,
This is a two-part question: the first part is general, and the second
is specific to the psych package.
First question: In the past I've constructed composite variables from
questionnaire data by using rowMeans(), and then correlating items
with the scale using cor() as an informal check for "bad" items. Over
the weekend I decided to take a

categorical variable coefficients in QSAR
Dear list:
I am interested in the following sort of problem, as is found frequently
in the field of QSAR. I have biological activity as a function of chemical
structure, with structure defined in a categorical manner in that the
SUBSTITUENT is the levels of the POSITION factor. For example, data from
Kubinyi (http://www.kubinyi.de/dd-12.pdf) for this type of analysis is

Hello,
I'm cc'ing R-Help.
Sorry but your question was asked 3.5 years ago, I really don't
remember it. Can you please post a question to R-Help, with a
reproducible example that describes your problem?

Freenas domU network performance issue
Hi guys,
I''m running a freenas domU (FreeBSD 8.3 based, ZFS v28, 2 vcpus mapped to
the same HT capable core) to serve storage for all purpose including other
domUs running on the same host. I did some study to understand how well it
works and the result is kind of confusing.
In summary, the network performance between domains on the same host is
worse than expected. And NFS service to
