Passdb disconnected unexpectedly when trying to do Director with LMTP
Hi there,
I'm running Dovecot 2.0.16 just set up the director with cut&paste from
the wiki. It's working & running fine for pop/imap connections (as
verified by doveadm director status user), however when I specify 'RCPT
TO' for a (tcp) lmtp connection straight away I get:
451 4.3.0 <xxx at yyy.com> Temporary user lookup failure

using dsync to convert mailboxes looses caching options
Hi there,
We're trying to convert users from Maildir to sdbox at present; I'm
using dsync to achieve this (2.0.16) however when the user's have been
converted we only get minimal information in the caching files. Is there
some way to preserve all the caching decisions that were previously made
so that when the user logs in to the new mailbox we don't have to cause

[Bridge] Bridging a wireless/wired LAN and a PPPoE connection
Hi all,
I'm trying out bridging for my wireless and wired LAN, so that they can
both use my PPPoE connection. Here's the network structure, pretty easy:
darjeeling (192.168.1.7) ringo (192.168.1.3)
(mtu 1500) (mtu 1500)
\ /
\ wlan0 <--br0 (mtu 1500)--> eth1

What to use for assignment, " = " or " <- "?
I've noticed an increasing tendency for people to use '=' rather than
the older '<-' symbol. When '=' became available as an assignment
operator in S-PLUS in the late '90s my first reaction was to switch to
it as well. Brian Ripley warned me that it was not a good idea. As
usual he was right, but it took a couple of pretty serious
finger-burning episodes

lmtp and recipient_delimiter
Hi list,
I have a small problem with recipient_delimiters contained in usernames.
Recently I have extended recipient_delimiter from "+" to "+-" in both
Postfix and Dovecot (using lmtp) and now any user that have a '-' in it's
username can't receive mail anymore, because lmtp truncates the localpart
after the '-' and of course can't find the first

Using lmtp to authenticate email users
FreeBSD 11.2
Postfix 3.3.2
Dovecot 2.3.4
I am trying to use dovecot lmtp with postfix to verify authentication of
incoming email and to avoid being a spam relay (an issue I was having using
sendmail as my MTA).
I am getting the following log message in /var/log/maillog:

Port variable in LMTP userdb lookups?
Hi all,
I'm currently changing some systems to use the redirector service, which
means that to get local deliveries going I need to get lmtp set up so it
can be redirected as well. This is working fine, however we have a
number of different ports running on our servers depending on which
brand a customer is using. When the time comes to do the user look up,
we use (port, user, domain) to

Hi, we're running dovecot 1.1.2 (centos5 32-bit rpm from atrpms) havn't
had any real issues with it, but today it looks like an index has become
badly corrupted. We're seeing this in the logs every time we log in to a

Disabling plus sign extension delimiter in lmtp listener (or userdb)
Hello
We have migrated our email services from a server, which did not support IMAP
and folders, therefore threated the plus sign + as a normal character in a
part of an email address.
Our new server delivers the emails via lmtp to dovecot.
the few users which got a + character in the username first could not log-in
(fixed by adding + to auth_username_chars).
Now the next problem turn out to

Poor pop3 over nfs performance
Hi,
About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers
from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP
performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse
than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to
http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling
about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but

Slightly more intelligent way of handling issues in sdbox?
Hi there,
I was doing some testing on sdbox yesterday. Basically I did the
following procedure:
1) Create new sdbox; deliver 2 messages into it (u.1, u.2)
2) Create a copy of the index file (no cache file created yet)
3) deliver another message to the mailbox (u.3)
4) copy back index file from stage (2)
5) deliver new mail
Then the message delivered in stage 3 ie u.3 gets replaced with the

dovecot-lmtp and postfix
Hi all,
I?ve got postfix setup to use dovecot-lmtp for (virtual) user delivery, and things to users or aliases that Dovecot knows about now get delivered correctly. However, I?ve done something wrong with postfix and/or the LMTP configuration because upon RCPT TO, instead of forwarding the mail off to the configured smartest, somehow dovecot-lmtp is ending up in the mix. (Perhaps this is more a

Postfix + LMTP with virtual users: how to strip domain from LMTP RCPT TO
Hi,
I am trying to set up my own mail server (to get off Google) and I have a
problem with mail delivery. I'm using Postfix as a SMTP front-end, and use
the LMTP server included in dovecot to receive mail from postfix.
I have a setup which works with the dovecot LDA, it involves calling
dovecot-lda with the -d flag. Postfix computes the username by removing

help: "dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files"
Dear All,
I'm having an intermittent problem, with dovecot slowing to a crawl.
Restarting dovecot fixes the problem.
Looking at the maillog, I see loads of these errors....
dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files
dovecot: Temporary failure in creating login processes, slowing down for now
dovecot: Created login processes successfully, unstalling
looking at the processes, I can see
