skype on 5.7
Earlier last year I had a 5.7 system running with skype. It worked
fine. Later last year I had to reinstall my entire system. I didn't
install skype then. Yesterday I tried to find a version of skype to use
on 5.7, but couldn't find one on skype.com; there's no version for
RH/CentOS 5.7. Does anyone know where a working skype can be found?
Thanks.

alsa not available in winecfg under karmic?
I upgraded to karmic yesterday, and ran winecfg.
The list of possible sound systems has shrunk to three: oss, jack and eSound.
I tried running winecfg plain, and with padsp and pasuspender prefixes.

Skype and Sound
I have installed Skype 4.0.0.8 on my new workstation running
CentOS-6.3 (kvm) and the Gnome DTM. This host has an Intel DG43GT
motherboard with on-board audio. The sound works when tested in the
sound preferences in the desk top.
Skype runs and the integrated usb video and microphone both work (I
infer this from the mic test in Skype options showing movement on the
intensity bar as I can hear

USB audio on Centos-7
I'm using Centos-7 on my PC, with ASUS motherboard. internal audio
has always worked fine EXCEPT that I can never get audio input (for
recording) to work. I want to feed audio from a phono turntable and
from a cassette deck. I use a phono preamp for the turntable, or
directly connect the tape deck.
but either nothing, or low level with horrible distortion.
so, I gave up (after years of

skypeforlinux lacks dependencies, won't update
For about a week now yum has tried and failed to update skypeforlinux:
Packages skipped because of dependency problems:
??? skypeforlinux-8.10.0.4-1.x86_64 from skype-stable
Processing Dependency: libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.20)(64bit) for
package: skypeforlinux-8.10.0.4-1.x86_64
Is there any resolution to this issue?

This error:
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository:
debug. Please verify its path and try again
occurs every time I run yum (and is where execution stops). Why? and/or
What can be done to fix yum so I can use it again?

using Skype on C-7
Hi
I've whined about this before, but now I feel the overwhelming urge
to whine some more. Forgiveness begged... :)
I've spent some very frustrating times trying to get a microphone
to work when doing skype calls.
According to the various sound tools available on Centos all the various
mics I have (built into webcam, analog headset, USB headset)produce
sound just fine.
but when using

new laptop: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the build options for a laptop I'm looking at buying is DVD vs
Blu-Ray. I've never used Blue-ray before, so is there some compelling
reason, as a Linux guy, to want to get Blu-ray?

bogus error message from yum update for gmime and gmime-sharp

But both of these are already installed:

installing working skype possible???
I easily installed and used skype on my previous linux distro on this
same machine, but am having problems getting it to work on my relatively
new centos 5.3.
I downloaded three versions of skype from their website: the two fedora
rpms wouldn't install, their error messages complaining that it needed
another package, a package which was already installed. (I figured it
had to be looking for

yum update -> [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out
Trying to update a second CentOS box, I'm getting this error repeatedly:
[Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out
I'm getting this on every mirror and have gone through the list of
mirrors more than a dozen times.
Oddly, the RPMs I'm trying to upgrade I upgraded just yesterday without
a problem on another machine on the same LAN with no problems
whatsoever. I can ping mirrors fine.

Backup live system
Though I've worked with enterprise systems, I'm not familiar with FOOS
backup software. Which of those recommended would allow me to backup a
system while users are active on it? If it matters the system uses LVM.
I'd also like to be able to avoid needing the network if possible.
That is, I'd plug in a disk into a USB port and backup the system onto
that... again, while

Recording piano and voice
The last time I wanted to record a voice announcement on my computer was a few years back, and as I recall I hooked up my Microsoft Lifechat headset and used Audacity to do the recording.
Now I want to record a "recitation", which consists of me playing my piano and talking over it.
I have a Casio CDP-230 digital piano but I've never tried hooking it up to my computer and making a

bash variable expansion moment
It's half a nice Saturday later and many attempts have brought no
satisfaction. Maybe this can't be done.
I'm trying to write a function which, when called from one function
execute in another. In itself, that's not the problem. Rather, there's
one built-in variable which is evaluated in the function definition and
it's value is then set (too early).
Here's the one
