CLI speed tester for CentOS?
I'd like to run a CLI broadband speed tester on my CentOS server.
I downloaded "tespeed" from <http://sourceforge.net/projects/tespeed/>.
This ran fine under Fedora-19, but failed under CentOS
with the message "# reject large message",
although from a quick look at the source
it did not seem to be using a large test-file.
Does anyone know of an alternative CLI

migrating from Centos 5.8 -> 6.3 LDAP Client Config
Hi,
I run a Centos 5.8 samba server which uses a separate LDAP centos 6.3
server for user and group authentication.
Now we migrate to a new centos 6.3 samba server and I'd like to know how
do 'ldapify' that new server the best way.
I'm a bit confused if I can use the same nss setup like on the current
old server or how and what to configure to go with SSSD?
May be someone can

Installing CIFS on CentOS4
Hello,
I have a CentOS4 install and I am trying to mount a Windows Server 2008
folder. When I use this command:
mount -t cifs //10.1.1.17/Org/MR\ Ops/ test, it only mounts the Org folder.
When I try the same thing on a newer computer (Fedora 15), it mounts all
the way to MR Ops. So I am pretty sure that my cifs file needs to be
updated, but I am having a really hard time doing this. I updated

migrate ext3 to ext4
Hi all,
I issued the commands on a single disk system:
with two partitions / is linux sda1 and /home is sda3
yum -y update
yum -y install e4fsprogs
reboot
umount /home
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/sda3
e2fsck -yfDC0 /dev/sda3
That worked just fine.
I then had a different system that is software raid.
where / is linux and md0 and /home is md1
yum -y update
yum -y

CUPS not rendering documents via Samba
Hi guys, any CUPS / Samba experts out there?
The CUPS printing guide is a horrendous maze of options. I've got
nearly there but I've got
one thing wrong and I don't know where to look.
I set up our two printers (HP K5400s) using the GUI printer tool. Both
print the test page just fine.
I set up the [printers] and [print$] shares and can browse to the
printers from Windows (XP for me)

CentOS 5.8 Samba and Windows 7
Hi,
any one has successfully joined a Windows 7 workstation to a samba (3.0.33) domain on CentOS 5.8?
I am wondering if I need to install a newer version (from sernet by example) or if I can keep the old one and try harder...
Thx,
JD

Backup live system
Though I've worked with enterprise systems, I'm not familiar with FOOS
backup software. Which of those recommended would allow me to backup a
system while users are active on it? If it matters the system uses LVM.
I'd also like to be able to avoid needing the network if possible.
That is, I'd plug in a disk into a USB port and backup the system onto
that... again, while

text-mode system and /media
I'm running a headless server, so no GUI, just ssh logins. I don't seem to
have the mechanism that automounts USB drives to a subdirectory of /media,
and from googling around I think that's a feature of a GUI-based system.
What implements it? Right now I manually create a mountpoint in /mnt and
then manually mount by label from /dev/disk/by-label after plugging the
drive in. It

Dedicated Firewall/Router
Hi All,
I want to build a dedicated firewall/router as I am launching a NPO and I can host this in my garage. (Comcast offered me a 100 x 20 circuit for $99/mo with 5 statics)
I used to run Untangle, but as of version 9, you are forced to use their build in protocol policies versus the firewalling I am used to (Deny All and then opening holes for specific IP's, etc).
There are so many

Samba users as local workstation admins?
Hi All,
We have a problem, which is that several of our users are local admins
on their own workstations. We'd like to let them retain these rights,
but we're switching to a PDC. Is there a way to have them authenticate
to the domain, and as a regular user, but on the Windows workstation
have full control? What's the best solution for this? I obviously don't
want to make them

Can anyone talk infrastructure with me?
Hi All,
I started a 501c3 (not-for-profit) organization back in February 2011 to deal with information archival. A long vision here, I wont bore you with the details (if you really want to know, e-mail me privately) but the gist is I need to build an infrastructure to accommodate about 2PB of data that is database stuff, stored video, crawl data, static data sets, etc. Right now in my testing of

Xen and networking.
I have a beefy machine
(Intel dual-quad core, 16GB memory 2 x GigE)
I have loaded RHEL5.1-xen on the hardware and have created two logical systems:
4 cpus, 7.5 GB memory 1 x Gige
Following RHEL guidelines, I have it set up so that eth0->xenbr0 and
eth1->xenbr1
Each of the two RHEL5.1 guests uses one of the interfaces and this is
verified at the
switch by seeing the unique MAC addresses.

Do I need a dedicated firewall?
Hi All,
So my electricity bill is through the roof and I need to pair down some
equipment.
I have a CentOS 6.5 Server (a few TB, 32gb RAM) running some simple web
stuff and Zimbra. I have 5 static IP's from Comcast. I am considering
giving this server a public IP and plugging it directly into my cable
modem. This box can handle everything with room for me to do more.
Doing this would allow

centos firewall?
Hi All,
I am new to CentOS and I signed up for a Mosso Cloud Server that runs
Cent OS 5.2
I can ssh in.
I ran: yum install vnc vnc-server
then: vncserver (and set desktop viewing password)
But I cannot connect.
How do I add 5900 to the centos firewall? How do I edit the conf file?
I only have SSH ability at this point...

E-Mail Serving Options
Hi All,
What are my e-mail serving options? I need to host POP, IMAP and SMTP.
I must admit that non-windows e-mail hosting has always been a chore
for me. I remember QMail and QPopper IIRC.

Issues with routing IPv6 to KVM Guests
Hi People,
I have some issues with routing ipv6 to my kvm guests. I use a bridge
interface with bridge-utils like recommended in the most howtos.
Bridge conf: http://fpaste.org/hh9U/
ip -6 route show output: http://fpaste.org/c5Rd/
sysctl.conf: http://fpaste.org/oMjD/
Thanks for your help in advance. If you need more informations just let
me know.

Hostname question
CentOS 6.4, clean install.
Zimbra 8.0.3
I am behind a PfSense box using a virtual IP. So the IP of the box is
192.168.1.27
I entered this in /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4
localhost4.localdomain4
::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6
localhost6.localdomain6
192.168.1.27 mail mail.meowbox.me meowbox.me
but `hostname -f` says:
