Problems with Package Installation.
I am having difficulty installing packages. For example, here I have tried to
install "gplots" but to no avail. I have tried multiple mirrors and
different packages (errbar) but after installation I seem to be unable to
access any of the commands or help pages. I am a little concerned about the
'lib' missing message but this has been present for previous successful

Glimmix and glm
Hello.
Some months age an e-mail was posted in which a comparison between Glimmix
and glm was discussed. I have not been able to find that e-mail on the R
archive. Does anyone recall the date of the above e-mail?
Thank you very much.

an R function to search on Prof. Baron's site
Inspired by the functions that Barry Rawlingson and Dave Forrest posted for
searching Rwiki and R-help archive, I've made up a function that does the
search on Prof. Baron's site (Thanks to Prof. Baron's help on setting up the
query string!):

search site for R (http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu)
My search site, http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu, has had several
problems recently, all my fault, for which I apologize. But it
now seems to be running reliably, on a new computer that is much
faster than the old one.
It uses htdig to permit search of the Rhelp mailing list, R
documents, R functions, and various combinations of these.
Search has several options, including Boolean search (with AND,

gregexpr in R 2.3.0 != gregexpr in R 2.4.0
Hi all
I have a question regarding differences in the way gregpexr works in R 2.3.0 and R 2.4.0.
In R 2.3.0, this is what happens:
> gregexpr(" [a-z] [a-z] ", " a b c d e f ", perl=T)
[[1]]
[1] 1 3 5 7 9
attr(,"match.length")
[1] 5 5 5 5 5
... while in R 2.4.0, this is what happens:
> gregexpr(" [a-z] [a-z] ", " a b c d e f ", perl=T)

the graph gallery strikes back
Hello useRs and helpRs,
Some time ago, in a gallaxy far away (here is the thread :
http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/R/Rhelp02a/archive/46532.html ) we
discussed about a graph gallery showing the power of R in that domain. I
did some work around that, and there is a (pretty advanced) draft here :

For instance, there are some of my graphs,

adding a built-in drop.levels option for subset() in 2.12 ?
With the approach of R 2.12.0:
with mild apologies for re-opening this perennial issue:
is there any hope, if appropriate patches are submitted, of adding a
drop.levels argument (with default equal to FALSE to preserve backward
compatibility/efficiency) to the subset function ... ?
If not, would a patch to the documentation and/or the R FAQ be accepted?
This does seem to be a continuing

Connect to server
Hi,
I am aware that this question might be a basic one.
I did browse the help and archives but I still haven't understood
how to do the following:
I run R locally and would like to read in data from a server
for which there is a username and password. That is,
how do I open a connection to a server with a password?
Thanks,
Hadassa

import SYSTAT .syd file?
Does anyone know how to read a SYSTAT .syd file on Linux?
(Splus 6 does it, but it is easier to find a Windows box
with Systat than to download their demo. I'm wondering
if there is a better way than either of these options.)

A very frustrating read.table error message
Dear Colleagues,
Occasionally I deal with computer-generated (i.e., websurvey) data

An example of "overloading" [
Hello:
Could anyone point me to a nice example where someone has created methods
for "[" on a user defined Class?
I looked at the package Matrix but that was a little daunting. I'm looking
for someone a little more introductory. I've tried to search the help
section and the web but its difficult since "[" isn't searchable.
Thanks in advance!

Best way to search r- functions and mailing list?
R-helpers:
It looks like http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/search.html has stopped
spidering the mailing lists -- this used to be my go-to site for
searching for R solutions. Are there any good replacements for this?
I want to be able to search both functions and mailing lists at the
same time. Cheers!

$ xx :Factor w/ 66 levels "01.02.2006","01.03.2006",..: 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3

it should work like this:

Confidence interval for response variable in mixed effects models
HI,
I am using lmer() for a simple mixed effects model. The model is of the form
logit(y)~ x + (1|z), where x is an indicator variable and z a multi-level
factor.
I would like an estimate of the response variable (either y or logit y) with
an associated confidence interval for a given value of x.
There does not appear to be a predict function written for lmer().
The output for the fixed
