Archiving mail
Hi, I'm going to migrate my company-mailserver to new hardware. I would like to take the opportunity to archive some older mail. But I would like to have it still accessible, would this be possible with dovecot ? I mean, I would like to put that older mail from different users (I got about 50 users) on some read-only media but mount that media in the users mail-dirs. That way I will have

load sbub-mailbox
Hi, We're about to migrate to dovecot (2.1.7 on wheezy), and I have a question about mail migration. Our 'old' imap mailserver will remain available, and has the same usernames/passwords as our future dovecot mailserver. The question: Is there an easy way to make the old mailboxes available under a subfolder (for example 'oldmail') in the mailboxes on the new mailserver?

Separate access to different "folders" of the same mailbox?
Hello Timo and everyone, I think on such an idea that may save me a bit of space and time: in my company we have a mailbox that holds a copy of every message that our SMTP processed. While it eats a lot of space, it saved us several times when, you may imaging, user "suddenly" deleted the most important message in his life and call our IT guys for help. The mailbox contains

mbox vs maildir
I've had clients 'request' nested folders, and it would seem that maildir is designed with that ability while with mbox it is difficult and.or impossible to implement (nested can be achieved; but not nested AND populated in each nest level). My question is, is one format 'better' than the other? It would take a fair bit of time to convert my system to maildir and I would want

dsync inbox conversion problem (mbox -> mdbox)
Hi, We are trying to convert all mbox mail on our systems to mdbox using dsync, in order to be able to use email sub-folders in Thunderbird. Everything works fine for non-inbox folders, however the inbox folders are not getting converted. We used: *dsync -v convert mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u* *dovecot --version* 2.0.beta6 (3156315704ef) (shipping with RHEL6/SL6) *dovecot -n* #

mbox folders on-disc layout
I'd like to change the on-disk layout for my mboxes from being ~/mail/foo/bar to ~/mail/foo.bar so that I can have folders containing both messages and subfolders, without having subfolders beginning with . and then having to do all the other fiddling with locations of index files etc. that goes along with LAYOUT=maildir++, and also leaving the filesystem layout looking sensible so

Moving from MBOX to Maildir or DBox ?
Hello Actually we use MBOX format for all our IMAP access but users complain they cannot create subfolders in imap folders, of course they cannot because of MBOX format ... I need gurus advices on changing mailbox format Maildir of Dbox ? What would be the safest way to go ? Note : we extensively use Thunderbird here. Thanks

Please advise on very fast search
Hello, I try to create some kind of mail backup system. What I need is system that will store mail for the whole domain, and allow me to restore messages from/to specified email at that domain. The scheme is pretty simple: on our main mail server the SMTP server itself has a rule to send a copy of every message to 'backup at backupserver.host', and the backupserver.host domain is

kjournald panic in 2.4.20 RedHat 7.2
Hi, If this is a redundant post I apologize. I am running 2.4.20 on what has been a very stable Athlon machine for months, tried to move a 2 GB file from an ext2 partition to an ext3 and kjournald crashed. pam_start() failed: system error
Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.1.3 on FreeBSD 6.3, x86, files are on NFS, except control and index files, which are local, on UFS2. It's moderately loaded, there are usually not more than 30 clients simultaneously. dovecot runs fine for 3-10 days, then people can't connect any more, and dovecot says: Nov 18 13:20:44 dizzy dovecot-auth: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP

Shortcomings of Maildir++ layout
Hi, I am trying to deal with the problem, that under regular mbox format a path can lead to either a file or a directory, but not both, while under IMAP, a path is usually both, a message folder containing subfolders. I found dovecot's approach to this problem, the Maildir++ layout described under http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MboxChildFolders , and was astonished to see, what problems come with

NFS mail storage
The parameters listed for nfs installations (mmap_disable, doctlock_use_excl, mail_nfs_storage, mail_nfs_index) - are they necessary for data integrity, and/or do they compensate for NFS latency and improve performance? My understanding is the indexes are a critical part of a dbox storage, but on the other hand having local indexes is a major performance consideration. Is maildir a

read only maildir subscriptions
Hello, I have some (possibly very simple) questions about subscriptions: I store my old mails in /home/oldmails/ in one Maildir where I have only read-only permissions (I cannot delete, create or modify any files). Under thunderbird, I can successfully log in and read my new mails, but I cannot subscribe (?) within thunderbird to oldmails (it is grey not black as other folders). What did I do
