odd "Not listening on called name behavior"
After migrating from RHEL 3 to Fedora Core 6
I get the following error message repeatedly
libsmb/cliconnect.c:cli_start_connection(1445) session request to
*SMBSERVER failed (Not listening on called name) : 15 Time(s)
What is *SMBSERVER? I don't have anything with that name on the
network.

MACHINE.SID - what if I delete it
Hello,
I'm doing all sorts of testing with samba 2.0.6 and NT wks domain
logons. It is just a test environment, and since deleting and recreating
the /etc/MACHINE.SID file nothing is working.
If a person deletes that file, what has to be done to get NT wks domain
logons to work again?
Delete and recreate the machine names in passwd and smbpasswd?

Cross Subnet WINS?
But the win wks on the other subnet is configured to use my
SAMBASERVER as its WINS SERVER, and it is configured using the
IP Adress of the SAMBASERVER and not the name. Shouldn't this
do the trick?
win wks is on a wireless subnet and hence runs at 11 MBPS, while
the SAMBASERVER is on a wired subnet. I read somewhere that windows
does some kind of "optimization" with slow networks.

how to fix the level-1 variances in lme()?
Dear all,
Edmond Ng (http://multilevel.ioe.ac.uk/softrev/reviewsplus.pdf) provides
an example to fit the mixed effects meta-analysis in Splus 6.2. The
syntax is:
lme(fixed=d~wks, data=meta, random=~1|study, weights=varFixed(~Vofd),
control=lmeControl(sigma=1))
where d is the effect size, study is the study number, Vofd is the
variance of the effect size and meta is the data frame.

difficulties with MuMIn model generation with coxph
Hi All,
I'm having trouble with the automatized model generation (dredge) function
in the MuMIn package. I'm trying to use it to automatically generate subsets
of models from a global cox proportional hazards model, and rank them based
on AICc. These seems like it's possible, and the Mumin documentation says
that coxph is supported. However, when I run the code (see below), it gives

Using smbclient to transfer files from a Linux system to a CIFS share
Hello,
I have a script which utilizes smbclient to transfer files across to a CIFS
shares from my Red Hat Linux 7.x servers on a daily basis.
Mounting of CIFS shares work fine to transfer but this is for some reason
not to be implemented.
I have the following version of samba-client

smbwrapper or smbmount ?
Hi !
The O'Reilly "Using Samba" book, recommend not to include smbmount
support as it is for Linux only:
"This feature wasn't being maintained at the time the book was
written, so the Samba team made it an optional feature and provided
smbwrapper instead. The smbwrapper feature works on more Unix
platforms than smbmount, so you'll usually want to use

Synchronizing offline files that I am not the owner of fails (Samba 2.2.8/3.0.0)
Hi everyone,
Problem: Windows XP's offline files synchronization fails with an
"Access is denied" message, if you have edited an offline file that you
have group based access to, but you are not the owner of. (Not using an
ACL-compatible filesystem.)
In 2.2.x the change appears to be successfully written to the server
anyway; subsequent synchronization attempts suggests that the

Kaplan Meier analysis: 95% CI wider in R than in SAS
Hello All,
?
Am replicating in R an analysis I did earlier using SAS. See this as a test of whether I'm ready to start using R in my day-to-day work.

Just finished replicating a Kaplan Meier analysis. Everything seems to work out fine except for one thing. The 95% CI around my estimate for the median is substantially larger in R than in SAS. For example, in SAS I have a median of 3.29 with a

User's smbd processes don't get killed
Hi, all.
Last saturday, we've done a cutover for Samba 2.0.5a to be our new
fileserver. All is going well, except for two network users that make me
reboot the server.
What happens is as follows:
* user logs on onto samba server;
* user opens and closes files, etc, OK until in one of these
operations his/her machine hangs;
* user reboots his/her machine to log on again. In this

ADS Authentication - CLDAP request failed
I have a RHEL 5 system, with Samba 3.0.33 installed, that _used_ to
authenticate against the corporate Active Directory system without any
problems. However, about a month ago the connection broke, but the users
didn't complain until some time went buy. I've spent quite a few hours
trying to reconnect this system, but nothing works. I do not believe it is
a simple configuration problem,

I read about the ability of Samba as a PDC. Please I need to implement this technology quickly to the situation and buttress my initial arguement that the right choice was an X
