Intermittent file server problems
Hi - We have been running into some intermittent problems with Samba in
a configuration where it is employed as a file server for several Windows
Server 2003 boxes. This problem generally occurs only under heavy load
when running some I/O intensive programs on the Windows side. Another
common element seems to involve working with files that remain open for
a long duration and are heavily updated.

max length of a factor variable
Hi
Is there a maximum length for the character string representing a level
of a factor? I have a set of several million variables, each a factor
of length 19. Each factor level is a character string which in some
cases can be many thousands of characters long. I am trying to find out
why my analysis fails - I just wanted to rule out the possibility that
the internal factor conversion has a

survreg with numerical covariates
Does anyone know if the survreg function in the survival package can fit
numerical covariates ?
When I fit a survival model of the form
survreg( Surv(time,censored) ~ x )
then x is always treated as a factor even if it is numeric (and even if
I try to force it to be numeric using as.numeric(x). Thus, in the
particular example I am analysing, a simple numerical covariate becomes
a factor

persiting complex R objects
Is there a method to save a large and complex R object (either as a
binary or text file) so that it can be loaded and reused at a later
time? Specifically, I am creating large lists (several thousand
elements), each element of which is either a vector or a matrix (with ~
2000 rows). The dimensions of the matrices are not all the same. My
ideal would be a set of functions of the form

Do I need a dummy?
Hi all,
I managed to get all my VMs (5 in total) up and running in bridged
mode with public IP addresses from my ISP. All are running Debian
Etch in a Dom) of Debian Etch with Xen 3.1 using the instructions
here: http://www.howtoforge.com/debian_etch_xen_3.1
But ideally I only want two of the DomUs on the public internet with
the other three only on an internal network and the two

function SAS dataset to R matrix (dataframe)
Is there such a function (like sas.get for S ...)
to be able to convert a SAS dataset (PC one .sd2)
to a dataframe or matrix in R?
thanks

qr with missing dependent variables
Dear R-help
We have a regression problem which could be solved elegantly if we could
figure out how to get the R residuals() function to accept missing
dependent variables.
We have ~20000 gene-expression vectors y, each being measured on the
same set of individuals, but each having a small random number of
missing values.
For each expression vector we wish to search across the genome

Samba 'stops' access to a file
I am running Samba on Solaris 2.6 and am connecting to it
from Windows NT4.0. Whilst running some Access software
the database is initially accessed without problem but part
way through processing I get the report that the database
file cannot be accessed since it is exclusively opened by
another user. I cannot then read the database at all until
I log out of Windows then back in. All is

load ing and saving R objects
Does anyone know a way to do the following:
Save a large number of R objects to a file (like load() does) but then
read back only a small named subset of them . As far as I can see,
load() reads back everything.
The context is:
I have an application which will generate a large number of large
matrices (approx 15000 matrices each of dimension 2000*30). I can
generate these matrices using an

Cleaning up ‘br i1 false’ cases in CodeGenPrepare
Hi,
I have come across a couple of cases where the code generated after
CodeGenPrepare pass has "br i1 false .." with both true and false
conditions preserved and this propagates further and remains the same
in the final assembly code/executable.
In CodeGenPrepare::runOnFunction, ConstantFoldTerminator (which
handles the br i1 false condition) is called only once and if after

Samba4 oplocks: LibreOffice and Word file locking
Hi
Lan with S4 and built-in file server for Windows clients. nfs for Linux
clients.
We are using LibreOffice to share documents and file locking works fine.
The first guy to open the doc gets the lock and a message is displayed
on other clients (windows or Linux) that the file is open.
Fine
Some users must however use Word 2010 to edit documents. Then file
locking doesn't work: anyone

power analyses for mixed effects lmer models
Hi all,
I'm new (post #1!) and I hope you'll forgive me if I'm acting like an
idiot...
I have been asked for some power analyses for some mixed-effects models I'm
running using lmer. My studies nearly always contain mixes of
repeated-measures and between-subjects predictor variables.
As an example, suppose I want to see if men or women show a stronger word
frequency effect. I

Troubleshooting underidentification issues in structural equation modelling (SEM)
Hi all, hope someone can help me out with this.
Background Introduction
I have a data set consisting of data collected from a questionnaire that I
wish to validate. I have chosen to use confirmatory factor analysis to
analyse this data set.
Instrument
The instrument consists of 11 subscales. There is a total of 68 items in
the 11 subscales. Each item is scored on an integer scale between 1 to 4.
