Over 400 smbd pid's?
Over the past 2 days, my smbd processes are multiplying worse than
rabbits. At least with rabbits it's easy to tell why you wind up
with so many...
Here's the setup:
Samba version 3.2.8-0.24 installed via rpm on a FC6 box with 2 nics,
both on the same subnet. The samba server acts as a PDC in a mixed
environment but mostly windows pc's running xp. It is used mostly

OSX causing multiple CLOSE_WAIT's
Lately it never fails when I attach a Mac running OSX 10.5 that I get
runaway pid's. I tracked them down so far to multiple close_wait's:
# /usr/sbin/lsof | grep pbg5mac
smbd 24876 root 6u IPv4 80015755 TCP
yoda.wrenkasky.com:netbios-ssn->pbg5mac.wrenkasky.com:49381 (CLOSE_WAIT)
They can grow to over 100 if I don't catch it or nobody can log on anymore ;-)

Does R support [:punct:] in regexps?
Hello does R support [:punct:] in regular expressions? I am trying to
strip all regular expressions for a vector of strings.
> x <- c("yoda-yoda","billy!")
> gsub("/[:punct:]/","",x)
[1] "yoda-yoda" "billy!"
Thanks

Advice on: sshd[28182]: PAM pam_set_item: NULL pam handle passed
Hi,
Ive got winbind and samba working great (version 2.2.3) on our RH 7.1 box's.
But as we have about 200 users on our domain, we want to restrict ssh
access on our linux box's.
So I created a group on the NT PDC called: Winbind
In this group, Ive only put our developers and us, the sy admins.
In the /etc/ssh/sshd_config, I entered the line: AllowGroups MMEBS+Winbind.
Thus, allowing

Getting Yoda unit to register all four ports
I have a sample of the Yoda VG400 and I am having a devil of a time
trying to get all four channels to register to Asterisk. I have an
Asterisk 1.2.1 server.
I have tried adding one at a time and rebooting it, but it stops after
the first.
http://www.yoda.com.tw/model.php?type=Enterprise_VoIP&pname=VG400
Anyone had success with this?

Filesystem panic
Hi,
I'm running RH9, 2.4.20-18.9. Each night, the server mounts
an external FAT32 disk using firewire, and performs backups
to it using rsync.
Twice within the past 3 months, the backup process has resulted
in machine crash (complete hang, hardware reboot needed).
From /var/log/messages:
Oct 22 04:02:20 yoda kernel: Filesystem panic (dev 08:21).

nutups with MGE Evolution via USB
I'm getting dmesg flooded with messages like this one:

What's wrong? I'm using Linux kernel 2.4.32 and nut-2.0.3.
The /etc/ups.conf contains

driver = newhidups
port = auto
desc = "MGE UPS"

Cyrus Virtual Domains: Domain migration from Cyrus
hi,
we want to migrate from Cyrus 2.x to Dovecot 1.x (!). We use the virtual
domain feature from Cyrus for a better disk partitioning:
/var/imap/domain.a/user/foo ..
/var/imap/domain.b/user/foo ..
/var/imap/domain.c/user/foo ..
In a exported skiplist DB, it shows like:

using nut in cacti
Hi. Are there any off-the-shelf solutions to monitor nut ups' with cacti? I
suppose snmp could be used, but since upsc can be run locally in the cacti
server, it might be easier to use a simple script.
Cheers,
Rodrigo

Missing the old sytle gnome-software in CentOS 8 -- help!
Hello folks --
I recently got a new laptop and installed CentOS8 on it. Yes, it's a
learning curve. What I am really upset/disappointed with is the "new"
gnome-software application. It doesn't provide nearly the functionaility
of the older gnome 3.28 app. Yes, I do know how to list EVERYTHING via
the command line but the ease of listing files etc associated with a

New contributed document available on CRAN
R Community:
In case you haven't seen it, I have written a manuscript
called "The R Guide" that is available in the Contributed
Documents section on CRAN. It is about 50 pages in length and
it is written for the beginning R user. I use the guide in my
undergraduate probability and math stat sequence, but it is
pretty accessible for anyone with a basic understanding of
statistics.
