Read-only alert for MS Office files on samba share
Hi everybody, We've been running a samba server for some time, which is used both as PDC and share space. Recently, we bought some new machines which came with Windows 7 installed. I struggled to find a solution to make them join the domain, and discovered I had to upgrade samba for that, which I did. We are now running version 3.4.9-42 on CentOS5. Since this upgrade, we have problems with

ldapsam + IE7 = Broken MS Office 2003/2007
Dear Samba people, I'm pretty stumped troubleshooting this odd behavior by Microsoft Office 2003/2007 where if I allow the machine to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to 7, Office breaks. Users usually get either "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable" or simply not able to save. The same machine with IE7 works fine for local users, or when

Samba "hijack" the connection?
Dear all, I have 2 domains: JUPITER.COM (Samba 3.0.23c - Centos5) and WIN.COM (Windows 2000 Adv Srv). I join a windows XP SP1 (MOON), first to Windows domain and then to Samba's. The problem is when I join the XP to Samba's and then try to logon to WIN.COM, the XP is instead logon to Samba, thus the username is not found. The DNS is not a problem, I set the DNS of the XP to

adsl-setup (compaq presario sr5010nx)
I just bought a new cheap compaq presario sr5010nx and so far have been unable to get my dsl up and running on Centos5. pppoeconf on Ubuntu works just fine -- same machine -- same harddrive. I've run adsl-setup and system-config-network? (separately) numerous times without success. So far I suspect a missing driver but suppose it could also be a detection issue. Suggestions or workarounds

File retrieval from outside hangs, internally is okay, only Centos5 affected
Hi! I have a really weird problem with some of my servers, namely all the ones running Centos5 When I try to download a file from the server to a machine outside our Cisco 6500 router/firewall, the download hangs about half the times (15 out of 40) when less than half a megabyte into the transfer (varied from 76 kb to 496 kb). One server has a portchannel (Cisco speak for ethernet bundle),

modern motherboard for centos-5
I'm considering upgrading, and am trying to choose a modern motherboard that nevertheless fully works with Centos5/RHEL5. Though I'm partial to AMD processors, and would like to use one in my new configuration, that's not a requirement, if the most appropriate board happens to be intel-compatible. However, given the way ASUS is dumping LInux and crawling more firmly into bed with

Issues with stat() call on CentOS5 vs CentOS4
Dear CentOS, I have recently upgraded several servers from CentOS4 to CentOS5 and I am noticing a strange change to the stat() call. I have written a very small program to test and show the behavior. I am calling stat() against a file which is exported from my NAS and mounted with 32k read/write sizes. [dougalb at centos4 tmp]$ cat my_stat.c #include <unistd.h> #include <stdio.h>

Will this work? server+centOS5+100users?
I am an experienced MS administrator of W2003 servers & Exchange systems. I have 5+ years UNIX mid-level experience but not in centOS. Grounded in SCO UNIX (the real SCO UNIX). We want to use CentOS on a recently grave yarded Dell poweredge 400SC server. This is a P4 3.0 Ghz, w/4GB memory, 2 SATA 250 GB disks. We want to use this server w/CentOS5, to provide file and print resources to 100

No Centos5 update announcements yet
What about the update announcements for Centos5? There was nothing posted to centos-announce yet for the updates that have been released so far for Centos5. Also, the centos-announce mailing list options page does not know about Centos5 yet. Best regards, Bernd.

YumRepo Warning: not using ftp, http[s], or file for repos, skipping - 5 is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet
Hi all Does anyone know what causes this error? I have setup a local CentOS repository, with mrepo, and can succesfully use it for updates & installation of just about anything. Yet, this error comes up. Here's my /etc/yum.conf: # PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo # in /etc/yum.repos.d [base-local] name=CentOS-$releasever - Base #mirrorlist=

source rpms for fedora
Hello, I'm running centos5. There's some rpms that exist on fedora that are not in centos5 in it's repos. I was wondering if it was possible to set up yum to get only selected packages in source rpm form ou of a fedora repo and install them on centos? In that way they could be recompiled for centos5. Thanks. Dave.

rsync bug with --relative and --delete fixed in CentOS5?
Yohoo! I'm using rsnapshot-1.3.0-1.el5.rf (from DAG) and rsync-2.6.9-1.el5.rf (from CentOS5) together. Rsnapshot now starts every task with the "--relative" switch. Without this switch it will backup all subsequent folders (like /proc and so on) which isn't desired. So I can't omit the "--relative". But there was a bug for rsync prior to 2.6.9 that it won't

CentOS5 and samba
We're trying to migrate RHEL3 and CentOS4 based samba servers over to CentOS5, but it's a bleeding disaster. We cannot get it to work reliably with any version of CentOS5, i386 or x86_64, the included 3.0.x version of samba or 3.4.x/3.5.x compiled from source. The symptoms are: read access is extremely slow, write access seems to work in principle (e.g. creating a zeros-sized file on

NFS4 idmap question
HTTPD on some of my CentOS5 systems is configured to run as user "nobody". Also, it needs access to some exported file systems. CentOS5 uses NFS3 so I changed the ownership of the files on the storage server to "nobody" to give httpd full permissions. Now I want to rebuild these systems with CentOS6 and httpd running as user "apache". The problem is how to give

Missing libexif update for Centos5
Hi, could it be that the libexif update to 0.6.13-4.0.2 for Centos5 somehow got forgotten? The updates for Centos4 were released nearly two weeks ago. In the meantime also lots of other updates showed up for both Centos4 and Centos5, but still no libexif update for Centos5. Best regards, Bernd.

Does sprof work on CentOS5?
No matter how I try, I can't seem to get a library profile from sprof on CentOS5. Does anyone know if sprof actually works on CentOS5? I'd be very interested to hear if anyone is using it successfully. At the moment I'm trying something like this to get the dump: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. LD_PROFILE=libmy.so ./mymain where libmy.so is the library I want to profile, and mymain is the

SATA errors on CentOS 5.2
We have a new machine here that we are trying to use for CentOS as a base for our primary application. Although I do not have direct access to the physical machine, I have begun looking into it remotely (via ssh) to see why we are getting the following errors periodically: /var/log/messages.1-Nov 1 18:19:00 Centos5 kernel: hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } /var/log/messages.1:Nov 1

Explorer & MS Office hang
I'm running samba 2.0.7 on Solaris 2.6. We've have terrific success for well over a year with samba until about a week ago I started receiving reports that users could not open MS Office docs saved on a samba share. The samba logs are full of information about oplocks like this: [2001/03/07 10:14:04, 0] smbd/oplock.c:request_oplock_break(1204) request_oplock_break: no response
