last version of puppetd that will work with ruby 1.6.8 (RHEL3)
Hello... What is the last version of puppet that will work with ruby version 1.6.8? I have a few RHEL 3 machines I would like to run puppetd (only the client, not puppetmaster). They will be updated to RHEL 5 fairly soon, so I don''t want to spend a lot of time trying to get a more recent version of ruby on them. thanks /me buys Luke a beer for all his help :) I now have

Slow Samba transfer
Hi, this is my first pos here, please be lenient. My problem shuld be a FAQ and, in fact I found a lot of references googling around, but nothing could really solve my problem, so here I am. I have a Samba server: Very basic wheezy amd64 installation on a small VIRTUAL server (Xen). Only fancy thing is direct access to a couple of RAID1 (mirror) arrays where data is stored. I normally access

This old tune again : read performance optimisations
Hi list, I have this problem of (relatively) poor samba read performance. Read performance is constantly, reproducibly lower than write performance and I can't really understand why. Here is the server configuration : dual octocore Opteron 6128, 32 GB RAM Adaptec 6445 RAID card 36x 2TB Hitachi SATA drives (raid 60) Sustained local disk throughput: over 850 MB/s write, over 1.4 GB/s read.

How to use apps and DLLs from XP partition?
I have a Dell Latitude D600 with Windows XPsp2 on the first partition and Ubuntu Feisty (Linux kernel 2.6.20) with Wine 0.9.30 on the second partition, set up to dual-boot. The XP share is NTFS and mounted read-only for Linux. What I want to do is run my Windows apps from the XP partition under Wine, because I really hate using Windows. A lot of the apps seem to ask for DLLs they can't find.

SMB2 write performace slower than SMB1 in 10Gb network
Hi forks: I've been testing SMB2 with samba 3.6.4 performance these days, and I find a weird benchmark that SMB2 write performance is slower than SMB1 in 10Gb ethernet network. Server ----------------------- Linux: Redhat Enterprise 6.1 x64 Kernel: 2.6.31 x86_64 Samba: 3.6.4 (almost using the default configuration) Network: Chelsio T4 T420-SO-CR 10GbE network adapter RAID: Adaptec 51645 RAID

Slightly OT: How to learn UNIX
Hi, I was wondering what would be the best way to learn AIX, Solaris, or HP-UX, for someone who knows Linux very well? Books? Courses? Self-teaching in a home lab? Thanks, Ugo

systemd-sysctl not running on boot
You are correct, I'll refine my problem, By running "systemctl status systemd-sysctl" I also receive the same output, but a simple "cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness" returns the default value, and not the one set by my conf file. But, if I run "/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sysctl" the "cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness" does return the correct value. Any idea ? Does

Is the file labeled properly? Anything in audit.log?

Hi, I have a problem where I can join an xpsp2 machine to a domain but, no matter what %COMPUTERNAME% i use, it says "system error: a duplicate name exists on the network" after the reboot when upon successfully joining. If I try to log in as a valid user, i get the "the system could not log you on because domain 'DOMAIN' is not available". I'd just like to

systemd-sysctl not running on boot
Hey all, After upgrading to CentOS 7.2, non of my servers run systemd-sysctl on boot. So far, I tried running manually /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sysctl, it runs smoothly and updates all the parameters. I also ran sysctl --system, which also executes successfully. I checked within systemd, and systemd-sysctl is wanted by the sysinit.target which is wanted by the multi-user.target - the one I boot

Using syslinux to boot xen without initrd
Hello all, I have a Linux kernel image with Xen compiled for an embedded system. It doesn't need an initrd as everything required for it to boot is already in the final kernel image, and it works perfectly. But I'm having problems to boot the Xen image without an initrd. I'm following this guideline http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Xen for my syslinux configuration file, but

Kaspersky Anti-virus unable to join Domain
Just a heads up. I recently built a new (XPSP2) image with the Kaspersky 6.0.3.837 on it. I had issues joining the domain with the AV running. Had to disable. (A domain controller for domain ABC could not be contacted.....) I didn't have AV on my previous image, so I don't know if version 5 did the same. I don't recall seeing this on the list, so I thought I would throw it out....

Pruning embedded samba 3.6 installation
I'm using the Yocto Project to build an embedded distro, to which I'm adding Samba 3.6 from OpenEmbedded. Doing so increases my root file system from about 63MB to 175MB. I seem to be building a large Samba server with a small ancillary operating system tacked onto it. I listed the files in my file system image, and see that lots of the commands are quite large. I understand that Samba 4

performance of pv drivers for windows
Hello everybody, I tried to measure the performance of the available drivers for windows as a HVM guest. I used the gplpv drivers 0.9.11-pre17, the PV drivers from Novell, and the drivers from Citrix XenSource with the XenServer 5. The Novell and gplpv drivers were more or less at the same speed, for both, network and disk performance. The disk performance was about 10MB/s reading and

How to avoid loosing rsync temp/partial files
Hallo, I am using rsync to copy remote files into a local directory. I use the following flags: "--remove-sent-files --partial-dir=/tmp --partial --temp-dir=/tmp --backup --suffix=.bak". I need the partial issue since in the final destination I must have only closed and full files. I need to remove the sent files from the destination since I need to avoid transferring the same file

Help setting 2 Offices in US and India
I am new to Asterisk and VoIP. I have been given the task of setting up a telephone network in US and India. When customers call the US location, the calls should route to India (using VoIP) and handle there. The Indian location should be able to call Us numbers using the Voip to save money. The solution should be flexible enough to support initial of 5 simultaneous calls with the option to
