Transparent File Caching
This is not really a samba question, but if anyone would know that answer,
it would be this group. :) Are there any Open Source projects that offer
network file caching for SMB/CIFS? Something like what Squid does for HTTP.
If not, do you think it would be difficult to position Samba into such a
role? We are going to use Cisco WAAS for branch locations, but I think the
cache in the devices may

Secondary DNS - samba 4 domain
How do I do about setting up a second samba DC as a DNS server? I have 2
DCs in the domain (setup via the How-to on the wiki)
If I try to follow the steps I used for the first controller on the second,
bind won't start because /usr/local/samba/private/dns hasn't been created
or populated. (I'm using the dlz backend). Searching the wiki has provided
nothing. How to I create the

Is this failed Asterisk setup typical?

I just read this article and would like some feedback from
experienced Asterisk users:

PDC/BDC problem - clients not authenticating against BDC
Hey list,
I've got a problem with my PDC/BDC setup. They're both running 3.0.23c on Sarge, and I've verified that both the PDC and BDC will authenticate users.

Read only configuration.
Hi,
I currently I have a Samba share configured as follows:
[pub_fileshare]
comment = Public fileshare
path = /u02/pub
guest ok = Yes
writeable = Yes
There is a subfolder under /u02/pub called /u02/pub/expenses/hardware
that I need to make read only. How do I do this? I am new to using
Samba.
I configured the share /u02/pub/expenses/hardware using the
configuration below. This works as it is

Dead DC change?
It finally happened, a DC is down and I am trying to figure out what to
do now. The LSI RAID card is dead (it actually caught fire briefly) and
I obviously cannot boot the system until the replacement arrives. I do
have a second Samba DC on the domain, but what I am seeing is that it
runs like Server 2000 for some reason. It is acting like a backup DC,
not a normal DC like 2008 and 2003. I

A good read
Hi,
I have been reading the older O'Reilly book on Samba. This book explains in general the concept of NetBIOS and some other related areas.
Do you have any recommendations as to what is available to read that will take me through the world of Windows networking? I am sitting here reading these messages and see things like "requires a flat namespace to function" or "dfs stub

Caching CSS Issue
I have a problem I was hoping someone could shed some light on. I
noticed that with every request to my server, the css file was being
requested. I went ahead and made a static link to the css file so
there is no query string at all, but still I see the requests coming
in with each request. Do I need to do anything else (in the response
header maybe?) to make sure that browsers will cache the

Windows 7 caching credentials breaks with hibernation
I am running Samba 3.5.5 on Solaris 10. I have one machine as a PDC,
one as a BDC.
If I logon to the domain from a Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) laptop,
hibernate the machine, unplug the network cable and wake the machine, I
can not unlock the screen. I will get the message "There are currently
no logon servers available to service the logon request." Other users
have reported this.

migrating NT4 PDC net rpc vampire errors with capital letters
Hi,
I have searched for days on Google and can't find a clear answer to my
question. I have a NT4 PDC which I am migrating to Samba 3 (Version
3.4.2-47.fc12) on FC12 with kernel(2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686). I am using
tdbsam as my passdb backend.
I setup Samba as a BDC and then joined to NT4 Domain succesfully. When I go
to vampire the accounts I get lots of errors and some user accounts get

Disable combining of loads and stores in instcombine
So, volatile’s been a fine solution — the issue is volatile pointers would perform the load every time; ideally memory accesses would be able to be cached. This is why I’ve been leaning towards disabling the part of instcombine that combines memory accesses instead of using volatile — there should be better performance.

Samba LDAP caching when LDAP server unavailable - possible?
I've been using Samba with OpenLDAP with great success on normal servers.
Recently however, it appeared to us that for remote locations it is more
economically viable to replace Samba servers with Samba running on
little routers like ASUS WL-500g with openwrt firmware/software.
It has a broadcom/mipsel CPU, and thanks to openwrt
(http://openwrt.org), it is possible to run lots of software

Samba and LDAP
Hi, all --
I am trying to set up an additional domain server within? my network
using SAMBA and LDAP.? There's a problem that I think is with LDAP.? If
any of you have set up a system like this, I would appreciate your
expertise.
Question # 1:? My PDC, which controls the domain and SAMBA, should
clearly use LDAP server.? Should the additional server use SAMBA server
or client??

introducing R to high school students
I participate peripherally on a listserve for middle- and high-school
science teachers. Sometimes questions about graphing or data analysis
come up. I never miss an opportunity to advocate for R. However, the
teachers are often skeptical that their students would be able to
issue commands or write a little code; they think it would be too
difficult. Perhaps this stems from the Microsoft- and
