will BDC work if PDC crashes?
Hello, Will BDC work if PDC crashes or there is no connectivity between them? I assume that the servers are storing users / passwords in LDAP database; both BDC and PDC have LDAP running locally (changes in PDC are replicated to BDC). Will users be able to log into the domain / use roaming profiles with no PDC (as it crashed or link was broken), when only BDC is running? Tomek

FW: making BDC samba + ldap server
Is this Samba 3 or Samba 4? If samba 3, which ldap server are you using> What is the mail server? Does the mail server have its own LDAP server included it or is also using an external LDAP server. If you want replication between LDAP servers, they should be the same type of LDAP server (e.g. OpenLDAP or Apache Directory Server or Oracle Directory Server.) If you have one

PDC/BDC Domain Logins Samba 2.2.7
We're about to start migrating from Windows NT 4.0 to a Samba controlled setup. I've got a question about the functionality of the Samba PDCs and BDCs. In my Windows setup I have three domains that are defined by geographic locations. Each of these domains "trusts" the other. In Samba 2.2.7, I can't have the trusts, so I'm looking at creating one giant domain that

some question about BDCs
Hi, I want to set up SaMBa PDC and BDC with LDAP. I read the TOSHARG2, but don't understand something: >Samba-3 cannot participate in true SAM replication and is therefore not able to employ >precisely the same protocols used by MS Windows NT4. A Samba-3 BDC will not create >SAM update delta files. Ok, I understand until that, but: >It will not interoperate with a PDC (NT4 or

Multiple PDCs, Single Domain
Hello, I have a rather experimental question to ask. I know that under standard circumstances, that you cannot have multiple PDC for a single domain, as they will conflict with each other. I am dealing with a case of a school district, where there are multiple buildings. There are T-1s that tie together each of the buildings, then a bonded T-1 grants access to the internet through the main admin

PDC/BDC without WINS
Hello, Our company is trying to implement central Windows Domain at HQ and replicated across all its regional offices. The implementation will have a PDC/LDAP-master on HQ and BDC/LDAP-slave on each regional office. In the hopes of saving bandwidth we are trying to avoid the use of WINS between WAN links. Is there any way of not using WINS and still have the clients find the PDC (for updating

samba PDC and BDC with ldap master and slave backend
Hi all ! In the samba-Howto, i was looking on informations on how to set up both a samba PDC and a samba BDC controller with ldap backend. I can read: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Do not install a Samba PDC on a OpenLDAP slave server... Possible PDC/BDC plus LDAP configurations include: . PDC -> LDAP master server, BDC -> LDAP slave server.

PDC / BDC in a Samba Domain Controller.
Hello I makeing a Domain Controller with Samba (v3.0.33) and LDAP (v2.4). I will install a PDC in the headquarter and a BDC in the subsidiary of the company that I work. The PDC and the BDC will have his own LDAP data base. I just install the PDC without problems and my next step is to install the BDC. I configured the LDAP that work in multi master mode. I made some test and the LDAP works

WG: Cross subnet browsing + OpenVPN
What about your openvpn config? The tun net must have an entry in your hosts allow. If you work with briding the remote network has to be the same subnet as the local!? Bridging is the best way to have a remote net integrated. I have one logging in form Berlin on my Samba-Domain. Replacing WinNT 4 PDC with Samba PDC
Hi All! Thanks to all of you that responded to my previous posts. I've gotten a lot more info now than I used to have! But I still have questions. The biggest right now is: Is there a way build up a Samba PDC as a direct replacement for an existing Windows NT 4.0 PDC? All the material I've found to date is written from a standpoint of creating a new domain as you create the Samba

can connect to 2 samba servers by name but to one by IP only
I have a samba domain with a Samba 3.4.x PDC (compiled from source on Solaris 10) and two Samba 3.0.x BDC's (Sun-bundled Samba on Solaris 10.) XP clients use DHCP. When on the LAN, DHCP includes WINS server (the WINS server is one of the Samba 3.0.x machines.) We also have a VPN for remote client access for Windows XP machines. XP machines could include home PC's (not in the domain)

Multiple Samba PDCs doubt
First, excuse me because I don't speak english very well (perhaps this is the reason that I mess up something when reading the documentation). I have read the Howto, some Examples and the book and I have some doubts which I like to solve. Excuse me for the big post, too ;) My starting point: - 3 Debian Linux Samba Servers - 1 Windows XP SP3 Professional - 1 OpenLDAP Server (on another Debian

LDAP Master/Slave
Is anyone using this? My smb.conf file has this line in server1(master) passwd backend = ldapsam:"ldaps://ldap.server1 ldaps://ldap.server2" and this is what server2(slave ldap, BDC) looks like: passwd backend = ldapsam:"ldaps://ldap.server1 ldap.server2" This is what happens. When I take down server 1's ldap server, server2 just starts using its local ldap server.

PDC/BDC design question
I'm in the process of building a Samba PDC for my office, and I have a couple of questions. We have three regional offices connected via VPN. We'd like to have network browsing across all three network, with a single login. I was going to do a Samba machine with an LDAP backend on the same machine. So would it be advisable to have the PDC at the main office and BDC at each of the regional

Domain Logins across VPN
I've been trying to get this to work for a few days now. I read that domain requests are sent via broadcast, and to use WINS to get around it. Well, I've enabled the WINS server on my Samba PDC, and told the BDC's on each VPN segment that the PDC is a WINS server. WINS resolution works apparently, I can sit on a VPN'd network segment and ping machines across the VPN via their

Samba multi-site advice request please
Hi all, I am looking at setting up a multi-site office and need to put a plan forward. The site consists of one head office and several branch office and my plan so far is this: In head office, one Samba PDC. Each branch office will have a local BDC that also stores files local to the branch, hopefully cutting down the day to day traffic across the VPN. The VPN I plan to use is OpenVPN in

windows 7 unable to join domain
Hi, I'm currently running Samba3x-3.3.8-0.51 on CentOS 5.5. I currently have many Windows XP clients associated with the domain and behaving correctly. However, I am unable to join a Windows 7 PC. I receive "The specified network name is no longer available." I've verified that DNS is configured correctly, and as stated XP machines have no problem joining. Per some googling,
