Very slow network speed using Tinc
Hi all, We are using Tinc 2.0.22 as a layer 2 VPN between nodes over the Internet. We are experiencing very slow network speed using Tinc. Between 2 nodes, we have 150 Mbit/s network speed without Tinc (public IPv4 to public IPv4 using iperf), and only 3 Mbit/s using Tinc (private IPv4 to private IPv4). Here is the configuration of Tinc we use : AddressFamily = ipv4 BindToInterface = vmbr1

Inconsistent Connection
Hi! I am just curious if someone has experience this before. I have a Linux acting as a samba server and then have Windows 2000 and Windows XP workstations. When users log in, everyone can see other computers. However, when they try to connect to other machines, sometimes they may connect in, sometimes they will get error message "The system cannot find message text for message number 0x%1

Wan Simulation / Bw/Latency testing
Hi, i have a question if linux is able to do the same thing that commercial wan simulators do (which cost 7000 $ or more). Basicly i want to use the following setup. Linux Router Machine 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 Eth0 192.168.10.1 Eth5 192.168.2.1 Eth1 192.168.100.1 WEB Server. 192.168.3.1 Eth2

Asterisk, mISDN and a Fritz card -- kernel crashes
Who mentioned fax? :-) Native CAPI isn't an option for us (unfortunately), as our service is a point-to-point service, which the AVM CAPI drivers don't support. We've now got another problem -- we're now able to make calls -- once. The kernel panics as soon as someone terminates a call (and, so it would seem, at various other times too). This has only been occuring since mISDN

Copy 100gb+ file over LAN?
Hopefully this is not too off topic. I have a server in which I'm creating an Exchange Information Store backup using ntbackup. The .bkf file it creates is 112GB. My goal was first to rsync it over to a local linux server, and then rsync just the changes over the internet to another linux server. I do this with other Exchange .bkf files (in the 4GB to 20GB range) and it seems to work well

Where is my bottleneck?
I'm running rsync via ssh on two machines connected with 100 Mbit/s Ethernet cards (at high speed) via a Linksys switch. It's all right here in a single closet. I'm sending large files (initial transfer, nothing preexists on the destination machine) and seeing transfer rates in the 2 Mbit/s range. The CPUs on both machines are more than 90% idle, and I upped the --block-size to 256

Yum update slow on CentOS 4.1 x86_64?
Hi list I have several CentOS 4.1 boxes, but only one is running x86_64 CentOS. yum update on all boxes is really fast, on the x86_64 box it is horribly slow. Even startup and "Setting up Repos" takes minutes to complete. The box is just idling all the time (no load at all) and is connected to an 8 mbit DSL connection. Also the downloading of the headers seems to go very slow,

Samba slow to Windows clients
Hi All, I have just built a new P 4 1.8 RH8.0 Server rpmed up to Samba 2.2.7-2 It works GREAT for smbmounted shares on my linux boxes and sssllllooooowwww on my Windows clients (2K and 98) Specifically, moving a 15 Mb file over my 100 MBit network with one hub takes around 20 sec for the smbmounted share on a Linux box and 8 minutes on a Win2K/98 box. Any ideas? Simon

slow logons - DNS problem?
I'm using roaming profiles, and to logon, it often takes one-two minutes or so on a 100 Mbit network (no traffic), with profiles as small as 2-5 MB. Clients are Windows XP SP2 machines, Samba versions 3.0.11 and 3.0.14a (deiifernt networks). Can it be a DNS problem? Right now the DNS is on a separate machine (small router really), and doesn't really know what Samba is. -- Tomek

OFF TOPIC: Core router upgrade for a voip colocation center
Hello, hope this isn't too far offtopic here but being a troller for a long time here I've realized there is a great knowledge base so I wanted to at least see if i could get some tips. I help run a small colocation company in California and I am in the middle of recommending a new 'core router' platform for our network. We offer mainly colo and dedicated servers, and several of

macOS performance issues
Hi, I?m currently setting up a samba Server on a Raspberry PI 4 with an external 8TB HDD. Since this is rather low end hardware, I?m trying to figure out which performance optimizations are still relevant today, since a lot has chanced in the past years and quite a few options are now set by default. The default values seem to work well for Windows but I?m having lots of issues with macOS.

bonding + VLANs -> Oops/panic, no VLAN on 100 Mbit cards [SOLVED]
As the issue concerns both the -user (configuration) and -devel (OOPS), I''m sending this message to both lists. Some time ago I complained about two problems: - VLANs are not working on machines with 100 Mbit cards - I get a kernel Oops (sometimes panic) when I try to use bonding and VLANs with Xen The root of the issue is the same in both cases: VLAN interfaces must *not* be

R 2.0.0 (Windows): slow startup over the network
Hello, I installed R 2.0.0/Windows on our network server (Win NT 4.0) with all CRAN packages and observed a quick startup on this machine (3s). However, when startet from different client machines (e.g. Win NT 4.0 or Win XP Pro SP2, Athlon XP 1700, 100 Mbit Network) the R Gui Window appears immediately but then it takes 90 seconds to get the startup message and the command prompt. The R
