Windows guest and virtio serial port
Okay, I've updated virtio serial drivers to latest ones. This did not help. Afterwards I've enabled "Show hidden devices" in Device manager of a guest os.In the "Other devices" section I can see two virtio serial ports with question marks (i did configure guest with 2 virtio channels). Is this a normal behaviour? Screenshot:

Sysinternals autorunsc.exe
Hi all, Sysinternals have just released a version of their autoruns command line tool that's capable of scanning an offline windows install for images configured to start automatically (very useful for tracking down malware). How likely is it that it could be made to run under wine on Ubuntu? I've got to the point where I have my NTFS partition mounted, I then issue the command: --- $

psexec from sysinternals - did anyone run it under wine?
psexec util (from sysinternals) is a tool which allows to execute commands on a remote Windows machine. A command like that: psexec.exe \\192.168.1.147 -u Administrator -p password C:\test.bat would run C:\test.bat as administrator on a Windows workstation with IP address 192.168.1.147. Quite cool, you don't have to install anything additional (like SSH server) on Windows, and you can

$DOMAINSID != $MACHINE_SID ???
hi@all just for my understanding: in a samba 3.0 domain (samba 3.0 as pdc with ldap), i thought each machine, joining the domain, gets the SID $DOMAINSID-RID - whether in LDAP or the machine itself but when i check the SID of a machine account (for example locally on a windows xp client), it shows up a different SID (checked with psgetsid), but it can join/connect/browse the domain like a

RODBC connection name
Hello all, I've scoured the RODBC.pdf, but there appears to be no way to set the name of the RODBC connection. This is useful for the DBA's to know that some processes should only run for so long and can be automatically killed. But currently the name is just R. so they aren't sure if the connection can be automatically killed. We are able to set this with our perl ODBC interfaces

Changing file permissions in Windows XP with a samba PDC
Question about changing file permissions in Windows XP when running samba as a PDC. If you hit Properties and go to the security tab, instead of listing the proper group/user names it lists the full SID. Is there a way to get Windows XP to map these to the proper user/group names? I am using LDAP as a backend with Samba. Thanks. -- James

Renaming a computer on a Samba domain
We shift computers around a lot, and therefore need to rename several whenever we get new batches of systems in. Tried simply renaming a system while on the domain, but got an "access denied" error. I WAS able to disjoin the domain, remove the LDAP entry for the computer, log in as a local administrator, rename the computer, and rejoin the domain a different computer name. However,

Man page for idmap_rid
I'm reading the man page for idmap_rid over and over and I can't understand it. I think it needs a rewrite so a normal user can understand. Using a practical example. Step 1: determine the highest UID in use for your /etc/passwd file (can we assume everyone has a passwd file?) Step 2: I don't know... Optionally at this point, document how to plug that into the formula RID = ID +

Several logon script bat files?
I simply wonder if I can have several different logon script bat files for MS Win users that validates through my Samba PDC? Let's say that group "users" should have logon batch users.bat and the members of the group "sales" should have both users.bat and sales.bat executed at logon? Or can I in some way use ONE script with parameters that knows about what groups the user

Oddness with SMB, PsExec, Win 7, etc...
Hi, I've got a simple PHP script which is using psexec from sysinternals to execute commands on a remote machine (which uses SMB under the hood). If I run it from DOS it works fine. If I run the same script via apache it hangs. Fired up Wireshark and had a look at what was going on. In the working version the treeconnect calls go to the IPC$ and then the ADMIN$ accounts on the remote machine.

Changing SID on Windows boxes (plug)
This sounds like an advertisement, but I've got nothing to gain. Just thought you might like to know about this. If you're cloning a bunch of Windows boxes, you'll have a problem with SID's... they'll all be the same. That's a bad thing. Maybe you have a need to change a SID... perhaps a dual-boot box where you want the computer names and IP addresses to be the same. This

recommanded way to restore objects from Deleted Objects
Hi everyone, in samba 4.5 changelog, it says that samba AD now supports tombstone reanimation. I've been used to ldbrename and ldbmodify to reanimate objects to keep objectSID, but if it is now officially supported, it would be better to use the proper way. Sysinternals tool adrestore [1] seems to be working properly (it does not restore most attributes, but this is expected since

Can't get idmap_ad to work with winbind (only idmap_rid)
Hi! With the end of support for Win XP from many application vendors, we finally decided to go AD with our small domain that right now consists of two XP desktop clients and one Samba PDC (3.6 from official Ubuntu 12.04 packages) that's also offering some file shares and a printer share. Since there already is one FreeBSD server for backup/mirroring, I decided to go all FreeBSD in the

pstools / psexec equivalent for Samba / Linux?
I was wondering if there is a pstools / psexec (tools by Sysinternals) equivalent, which could be run on Linux machine to execute a process on a remote Windows machine?

Symlinks for Windows
Hi all, Dave Burt mentioned the possibility of adding symlinks to the Dir class. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtml#junction There is also Autrijus Tang''s symlink Perl module at http://search.cpan.org/~autrijus/Win32-Symlink-0.04/ Looks easy enough, but it only seems to work for directories, not regular files. Should we add this to the Directory class, or simply

Create Virtualbox image from running system?
I see that Microsoft has a utility that (apparently) can read a running system and create an image that can then be imported and run on Virtualbox. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/disk2vhd "You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being
