Slow connection and browsing
I have tried this with a bunch of different versions of Samba, starting
somewhere in the 3.0.1 series. I am currently running 3.0.34 on several
Gentoo servers, all showing the same problem.
I am almost positive it is not a Samba issue, but I was just hoping that
someone may have experienced it and knows if there is a solution.
When I have the current Novell Netware client installed on XP

Small/Medium Samba Install
I am currently researching the possibility of slowly moving an existing
Novell network [with all Windows clients except mine :)] to something
Linux based. I have about 900 clients that would be slowly migrated if
this whole thing is feasible. The version of NetWare we are using now is
no longer "officially supported" from Novell, so it is becoming more and
more difficult to successfully

Print only server
I currently have a 95% Novell Network network that continues to have
constant printing issues. Enough Novell bashing, here lies the problem.
I am trying to migrate all of our printers over to a samba print server,
but in several of my tests I have come up with problems. I will attach
my smb.conf at the end for those of you that wish to see it.
I am using lprng as the printing backend because all

Okay, I've been chasing performance for a while now. I have no idea if I

Samba vs Linux file permissions
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
I cannot find anything in the documentation or mailing list that
addresses this oddity.
I've installed Samba Version 3.4.7 on Ubuntu Server 10.04, and I'm
utterly confused by samba's behavior regarding permissions.
Users on the server have home directories in /home/chemgroup/username.
(chemgroup is actually a symlink to another

to only show shares that the user has access too, but I don't believe it
is possible.
To remedy this, I tried to create a share called "share". Then create
subdirectories under that using UNIX groups. I am using a group sticky
bit in conjunction with create mask = 770 to keep the perms straight.
Here is the share:

Winbind troubles
I've rolled 2 virtual servers running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and have
installed the SerNet packages. SRV1 has the AD setup and SRV2 is a
member server. I've followed the wiki for both servers to the letter,
and winbind still refuses to grab info on the member server.
I rolled the provision with --use-rfc2307, added a bunch of users with
samba-tool. I then manually created a group and made sure

Sudden printer errors
I'm using Samba 4.2.0 and cups 2.0.2. I have had the same print server
and config since the early 3.x days and have never had an issue. Now
suddenly, any new printers added to cups can no longer be installed in
Windows. XP clients give a generic "Windows cannot connect to the
printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified
priner has lost its connection to the

Minor 4.4 upgrade oddity
I ran "yum upgrade" early yesterday from a remote ssh login, but upon
looking at the set of packages I decided to wait until I could sit at
the console to reboot. So I declined to proceed with the upgrade when
prompted.
Later when I ran "yum ugrade" again, it found no packages to update.
After some poking around checking the mirrors, running "yum clean
headers",

Ghosting Linux Partitions.
I was thinking of putting a slightly bigger HD on my Linux server and would
like to know the easiest way.
I know that ghost works well on FAT32 partitions, but does it work on Ext3
partitions too?
Id rather not reinstall if I don't have to, so any and all suggestions are
appreciated.
TIA

SSL Certificate
I'm using a Samba4 ADDC and just noticed that the SSL that was created
at install time is about to expire. Is there something Samba specific to
create a new certificate, or should I manually create a new one using
openssl?
Thanks!

Does rsync need a --ignore-unreadable-files option?
I work on software that archives gigabytes of files to multiple sites.
Occasionally one or two files have no read permissions:

The error message is:
rsync: send_files failed to open "/dir/foo" (in xxx): Permission denied (13)

Actually it does not .. they have not rolled that patch into the LTS
3.18 branch at kernel.org yet.
As soon as it hits the LTS tree I will build a new kernel though.

Xen kernel-3.18.25-18 for EL6 and EL7 (CVE-2016-0728)
There is now a kernel-3.18.25-18 that fixes CVE-2016-0728 (and upgrades
to the lastest 3.18 LTS kernel) for Xen4CentOS users.
This kernel can be tested from here:

(CentOS-6)
and here:

(CentOS-7)
Once we get several tested installs we can move this
