PDC/BDC without WINS
Hello,
Our company is trying to implement central Windows Domain at HQ and
replicated across all its regional offices. The implementation will
have a PDC/LDAP-master on HQ and BDC/LDAP-slave on each regional
office.
In the hopes of saving bandwidth we are trying to avoid the use of
WINS between WAN links.
Is there any way of not using WINS and still have the clients find the

Promote samba-3 BDC to PDC
Hi,
We have an old domain with a samba-3 PDC and LDAP backend in our HQ and
two BDC in our branch offices.
Since we don't use the domain in our HQ anymore and one of the branches
will be moved to our new domain (2003/2008) I'm thinking about
decomissioning the PDC and promote both BDCs as PDC for their branch
offices and networks.
I would also get rid of LDAP. Changing the backend to

Inter Domain trusts and BDC
I have a Samba-LDAP PDC at an office and 5 BDC's at other offices. At
corporate HQ I have a W2k Server and domain. I have properly
configured an interdomain trust and Users in the Samba domain can get to
sections on the W2k machine regardless of location. However, members in
the W2K domain can only access shares on the PDC. Attempts to access
shares on a BDC cause a user name

homes on different subnets with smb pdc bdc /ldap, automatic home mapping sporadic failures
Hi Samabatistas,
I have a ldap smb pdc and a ldap smb bdc in a different subnetc.
connected via a vpn
Users work at the place of the pdc have their home and their profile there,
Users working on the place of the bdc have their home and their profile
on the bdc.
I did this with editing their ldap attr. on the pdcs ldap master
this works like charme, but sometimes

will BDC work if PDC crashes?
Hello,
Will BDC work if PDC crashes or there is no connectivity between them?
I assume that the servers are storing users / passwords in LDAP
database; both BDC and PDC have LDAP running locally (changes in PDC are
replicated to BDC).
Will users be able to log into the domain / use roaming profiles with no
PDC (as it crashed or link was broken), when only BDC is running?

PDC/BDC Domain Logins Samba 2.2.7
We're about to start migrating from Windows NT 4.0 to a Samba controlled
setup. I've got a question about the functionality of the Samba PDCs and
BDCs.
In my Windows setup I have three domains that are defined by geographic
locations. Each of these domains "trusts" the other. In Samba 2.2.7, I
can't have the trusts, so I'm looking at creating one giant domain that

Samba BDC at company branch in different subnet?
Hello guys,
i just wanted to ask about an idea, if it is feasible (or not).
The company i work for (350 users) has 2 branches, that are
interconnected with HQ via L2TP (encapsulated in IPsec) tunnels, that
are setup in between Mikrotik routers.
current setup:
300 users
HQ 192.168.2.0/23
Samba PDC + LDAP
(389 DS) backend

PDC/BDC design question
I'm in the process of building a Samba PDC for my office, and I have a
couple of questions. We have three regional offices connected via VPN.
We'd like to have network browsing across all three network, with a
single login. I was going to do a Samba machine with an LDAP backend on
the same machine. So would it be advisable to have the PDC at the main
office and BDC at each of the regional

SMB Network design guidelines
Hi:
Can anybody point me to some guidelines about SMB network design or
give some advice? Samba HOWTOs are very detailed recipes, but I need
some general tips, like if we are serving fish or pasta tonight :-)
This is the situation: a WAN with 20 offices with 2 to 30 people in
each, plus a headquarter with 50 people, plus the databases and
central file servers. The organization grew up on a NT4

every site keep working even when wan link is broken.

the unusual way ldap -> AD
Hi,
(this will be a long post)
currently we got a working setup of one PDC in our HQ and five BDC in
our branch offices, all backed by LDAP. PDC is LDAP master and all
branch offices are configured as syncrepl. This setup was more a
playfield for me, which 'suddenly' went into production by business
needs, you know the deal... The setup does a fine job, but there is no
failover of any

Promoting BDC to PDC
Hi,
Does someone know how will all my client machines find the BDC when
the PDC is stopped. Both PDC and BDC are running Samba with LDAPSAM
backend replicated on both the PDC with master LDAP database and BDC
with replicated LDAP database. But when I stop PDC the clients are
not detecting the BDC broadcast. The replication on all domain
controllers are perfect. I went as far as making BDC

PDC-BDC Wins Resolution
I am hoping someone can help here. I noticed a really odd issue. WINS
resolution doesn't seem to work between my PDC and BDC, both Samba
3.0.14a boxes running on Debian. I have nsswitch.conf configured
properly, I think. Here are the nsswitch.conf settings.
PDC:
hosts: files dns wins
BDC:
hosts: files dns wins
On the BDC, I have the parameter wins server = 192.168.0.2, the address

Samba PDC/Windows BDC
I have a RH 7.2 PDC which uses DHCP for 2 machines on the network. My Win9x
machine as a client/BDC just in case and uses a static IP. If the PDC goes
down. I have to put in or take out the PDC's gateway IP and was wondering if
there was a way to get ONLY the info I need from DHCP to the Win machine. To
attempt to clarify, when the PDC is up, it will assign its gateway IP to
the BDC (since it

PDC/BDC Load-Balanced?
Hallo,
I've setup a BDC in the same subnet like my PDC. I observed that some
User take the BDC to logon.
The Domain-Join of some PCs will also done at the BDC.
Is this behavior normal and wanted? If done so, I have to rsync the
profiles or only netlogon?
Best regards
Matthias

PDC/BDC problem - clients not authenticating against BDC

I've got a problem with my PDC/BDC setup. They're both running 3.0.23c on Sarge, and I've verified that both the PDC and BDC will authenticate users.

sambaPwdMustChange not synced on PDC from BDC
Hi
I have a PDC/BDC samba/ldap environment.
PDC:
samba 3.0.24
slapd 2.3.30
BDC:
samba 3.2.5
slapd 2.4.11
Ldap replication is working fine, but I have noticed two issues
1- when a windows user change password on BDC, sambaPwdMustChange and
sambaPwdCanChange is not synced on PDC
(using ldap passwd sync = yes and unix password sync = no)
2- when using 'net sam set pwdmustchange' on

Samba 4 BDC to Windows 2008 PDC
Hello folks,
The documentation for running Samba as a BDC clearly states that it is
not operational with a Windows PDC [1], but this documentation covers
Samba-3 and it was suggested in IRC by scooby2 that this functionality
is now suported in Samba 4. Can anyone else confirm this? Should I use
the documentation for Smaba BDC or is there more current documentation
for this functionality?

migration of PDC tdbsam backend to BDC - failed to fetch domain database
Hello
According to NT4 Migration Using tdbsam Backend
http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ntmigration.html#id2604610 I
would like to transfer PDC settings (users, groups sids) to BDC and later
make from BDC PDC machine.
I have Fedora Core 7 PDC(hostname serwer) and Centos 5.4 BDC (hostname
serwer2) both on tdbsam backends.
I have copied smb.conf, passwd,group,shadow,secrets.tdb files
