Active Directory domain controller authentication order
Hello, I'm curious if anybody knows how to configure the order in which domain controllers are contacted by clients for authentication purposes and other such stuff. I've a situation where it seems that all our Windows computers are attempting to authenticate off of a remote server before the local one, which is backwards. I'm not even certain where to check what they are actually

Dovecot doesn't use vchkpw properly :(
Hey all, It seems that dovecot does NOT call vchkpw properly when using vpopmail-style authentication, I can only guess that it reads the vpasswd{,.cdb} files directly. This is indicated by the syslog log for the mail facitily which reads: Jun 30 16:51:30 [vpopmail] vchkpw-smtp: (PLAIN) login success blah at blah.com:24.17.153.137 Jun 30 17:16:25 [pop3-login] Login: blah at blah.com

Sharing nested folders / maildir variations?
Hey all, So I've got a shared namespace in dovecot where users can, via a custom control panel, share their folders into (which creates a symlink) in order to allow anyone on their domain to access it. I store mail in maildir. The issue is that when people share folders, they expect that when they make subfolders, those are automatically shared as they are contained within it.

Stability
I am currently using Dovecot 0.99.14-r1 as provided by Gentoo, in a Qmail + VPopmail configuration. I am curious as to how to configure it to ensure the most stability, as it serves >1000 clients. I would rather disable any indexing that give small speed improvements if they are not known to be stable. Advice? Cheers, -- Casey Allen Shobe | http://casey.shobe.info cshobe at

No shell prompt presented on SSH connection
I just installed OpenSSH-3.0.2pl1 on a new machine, but am unable to use it. SCP works, ssh outbound works, and ssh inbound appears to work but I never get a prompt. The password authentication works... The output of ssh -vv from a client machine is exactly the same as the output when connecting to a machine where I do get a prompt, so it must be something outside of the ssh connection

Easiest CD --> Vorbis
What's the easiest single step command to use cdparanoia & oggenc to convert a CD straight into oggs without sucking a ton of disk space for WAVs in the meantime? Is it possible to do it so that the WAV rip resides in memory and only the ogg gets written to disk? Outlook causes BIG dovecot index problem (beta 8, outlook 2003)
Hey all, Well, I typed up all the below, then managed to fix the problem before sending this to the list. I'll send it anyways, in case anybody else is affected by it (and because it does indicate a definite bug in Dovecot's experimental Kerberos support). The fix is to recompile without kerberos enabled, and to take gssapi out of the auth methods in the config (the latter alone

libvorbis won't compile on LFS.
This is a linux from scratch based on the 2.4.13 kernel. I'm using a GCC 2.95.3, autoconf 2.52, and automake 1.5. Libvorbis compilation fails with a Signal 11 error as shown below. I had the same results with 2.4.12, 2.4.10, and 2.4.9. I've compiled hundreds of other packages without getting this error, and I've even tried changing the memory. This is my configure line, I used

Digest-MD5 and GSSAPI not working in beta3
I have built dovecot with kerberos support, however am not able to log in using GSSAPI support in my mail client. I receive the following error: SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found Additionally, Digest-MD5 does not work - I receive an authentication failed (as though I have an incorrect password) if I try to use it. I am using PostgreSQL for authentication, and returning

Changing owner/group on samba share
I've looked around and can't find the answer. We have a Samba file server joined to our Active Directory and using ACLs. We are enforcing quotas on this machine, but when specifying the home directory, the directory is owned by the person who created it. Using Windows and going into the security permissions, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove the owning user/group. When you hit

More failover issues
In 1.6.0, when creating a MDT, you could specify multiple --mgsnode options and it would failover between them. 1.6.3 only seems to take the last one and --mgsnode=192.168.1.252 at o2ib:192.168.1.253 at o2ib doesn''t seem to failover to the other node. Any ideas how to get around this? Robert Robert LeBlanc College of Life Sciences Computer Support Brigham Young University leblanc at

ads_sasl_spnego_krb5_bind failed: Program lacks support for encryption type [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Hi all, According to this bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=566977 This particular error is actually a bug in the samba code. Does anyone know if there are patches that fix this ? Adding "allow_weak_crypto = true" to /etc/krb5.conf does not solve this for me :( Has anyone got a working solution for this ? -Alex IMPORTANT: This email remains the

winbind + Active Directory + email
Ok, I can't seem to search for the right thing to get what I need. I'm looking for a solution where if quota or some other mailing system needs to send an email to an Active Directory user, that it uses the email address listed in Active Directory for that user. We are connected to Active Directory using winbind, on one system we are using pam_winbind, on another we are not. Of course,

2 questions: Linux filesystems that truly compare to NTFS / winbind causes Linux to lockup when connectivity to AD is lost
Hello samba gurus, I have a couple of questions regarding Linux file systems, and their ability to mimic NTFS, and the other question is regarding winbind and its uncanny ability to virtually lock up a samba AD member server once connectivity to the AD is lost. I apologize if anyone gets annoyed by this question. Environment: I am using samba 3.2 with XFS+ACL support joined as a AD domain member

Convert idmap_rid to idmap_hash?
I was looking through the change log of 3.3.0 and noticed that a new idmap_hash was introduced that seems to play well with trusted domains. What means are available to convert all my rids to this new hash so I can update file permissions? Microsoft OneNote 2007 painfully slow
We have a user trying to share a OneNote 2007 notebook and it takes minutes to load a 20 KB notebook. I've opened a 500 KB Excel spreadsheet from the same share and it took seconds. Has anyone else run into this problem? We are running Samba 3.4.8 on Debian Squeeze. Thanks, Robert LeBlanc Life Sciences & Undergraduate Education Computer Support Brigham Young University

Ideas for distributed Samba servers
I'm trying to think about how to setup a Samba system and would like to pick the brains of some experts. We are looking up put a large amount of storage ~75TB in a central data center. We have some remote (ok, not remote, but across slower links, ok if you consider several hundred clients over 1Gb to be slow) locations that we would like to set up samba servers that 'cache' the file
