Samba/BackupPC under CentOS-5.3
I'm almost completely ignorant about samba on Windows machines,
In particular I know nothing about Windows permissions,
if that is relevant here.
I am running BackupPC on a CentOS-5.3 machine.
It works perfectly for backing up Linux folders,
but I have great difficulty extending it to Windows clients.
To be precise, I have a share called "EA Games D"
on a machine running Windows XP

If so, which is recommended?

Can only login as root
I have a strange problem on a CentOS-5.8 machine.
I can only login as root.
If I try to login with one of the user's names,
it hangs for a long time.
I thought it hung forever, but I just found that
I do login after "su tim" after 5 minutes.
It seems that the problem lies in repeated messages in /var/log/messages

cron.hourly runs twice
For some reason I cannot fathom,
cron.hourly runs twice each hour
on one of my two CentOS-5.4 systems,
as reported in /var/log/cron:
-------------------------
Mar 16 14:01:01 helen crond[27833]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
Mar 16 14:01:01 helen crond[27834]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
-------------------------
On the other it just runs once, as expected.

--include-from doesn't include
I'm trying to backup certain pieces of my XP workstations home directory
to a mapped drive using rsync on Cygwin. I was able to create a fairly
useful exclude-from list, but I'm unable to re-include portions a subset
of an excluded directory. My rsync command looks like this:
rsync -avn --delete --stats ~/ \
/cygdrive/i/HRMS/rdavies/backup/home \

Setting up BackupPC on CentOS-7
I'd be interested in any corrections or comments
on the following instructions (basically for myself):
We assume that BackupPC has been installed:
sudo yum install BackupPC
1. BackupPC must be run by the user backuppc.
Accordingly the lines
User apache
Group apache
in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf should be changed to
User backuppc
Group backuppc
2. The user backuppc must be able to

Mystery of email authentication
I'm trying to setup sendmail/dovecot on a new server running CentOS-6

Everything seems to go well, but when I run fetchmail I get this warning:

use --sslcertck!)

Visual Source Save and samba
Is anyone out there running Microsoft's Visual Source Save
with a samba share?
We are doing so here and are encountering difficulties. The
"working directory" is a samba share. It seems that VSS is
not manipulating file permissions appropriately when items
are checked in and out. User always has write access to the
item. Is anyone using MS VSS successfully with samba and

R version of SAS Proc Varclus
I am interested in finding an R version of SAS "Proc Varclus". SAS's Proc Varclus implements an oblique cluster analysis based on principal components. How can I find out if R has a package that runs the same algorithm implemented in SAS "Proc Varclus"?
Thank you,

cron mystery
I've just noticed that cron.daily, etc,
do not seem to be running on my CentOS-5.4 system.
The scripts in /etc/cron.d/ all run fine,
but those in /etc/cron.hourly, etc, seem to be ignored.
I see that according to /var/log/cron
these commands are seen, eg
Feb 28 18:01:01 helen crond[6680]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
but none of the scripts in this directory
seem to be touched.

rpart unbalanced data
Hello all,
I am currently working with rpart to classify vegetation types by spectral
characteristics, and am comming up with poor classifications based on the fact
that I have some vegetation types that have only 15 observations, while others
have over 100. I have attempted to supply prior weights to the dataset, though
this does not improve the classification greatly. Could anyone supply some
