pam_winbind and krb5_auth
Hey list,
I'm wondering if there is any advantage to be gained by using kerberos with pam_winbind.
I've configured pam_winbind and enabled krb5_auth though apart from being granted a ticket, I'm unsure as to any advantage that would be gained by enabling Kerberos.
Thanks,
Matt Delves

authenticating new nodes that are created by provisioning
Hey Folks,
I''m looking at doing automated provisioning of new servers and am trying to integrate puppet into this process. What I''m wondering though is what the best process for securely registering a new node is.
At the moment the first time puppet is run I have to then accept the certificate on the puppetmaster and then run puppet again.
What I would like to do is accept the

issues with pam_winbind and ability to use old windows password
I'm currently using an implementation of pam_winbind to authenticate users on linux servers via Active Directory. This works as expected apart from an issue whereby after changing a password, a user can login with both their old and their new password.
Having done a bit of investigation, it appears that this is a 'feature' from Microsoft as described in

Distinguishing between SLES 10 SP2 and SLES 10 SP3
Hey All,
I''m wondering if there is an easy way to distinguish between SP2 and SP3 on a SLES 10 installation.
Thanks,

Getting started with puppet
Hey Folks,
I''m just starting to look into Puppet though am finding it a bit
confusing as to how to get it setup on the network I administer. At the
moment it is a combination of RHEL 4 and SLES 10 boxes with windows and
novell also.
I know that windows / novell is beside the point though am wondering how
to get puppet setup on the RHEL and SLES side of things.
Any good howto''s

puppet performance and inability to retrieve file metadata
Hey All,
I''m running into a problem whereby some nodes are struggling to retrieve the metadata for files. I''ve moved all the nodes across to 0.25.1 to try and eliminate version inconsistencies though they still appear. I''ve also started using asynchronous stored configs as well.
I''m wondering if this has anything to do with performance on the box and if there

ADS - Not recognizing Domain Admin group membership (from 1 workstation only)
I've been running a couple Centos5 and RHEL4/5 servers with samba for a
while now and everything has been working great with our Windows 2003 AD.
All of a sudden though I'm experience something really weird on one of the
RHEL5 boxes. Whenever I try to connect as a Domain Admin from one
particular Vista client, I get access denied and repeated prompts for a
username/password - this has

Other domain sequence numbers are -1
Everyone,
I have configured a new SLES 10 server exactly the same as I
had previously configured a SLES 9 server. The only difference is the
version of samba. On the SLES 10 server, I am running the 3.0.23c
level, the SLES 9 server is behind a little. My problem is with
connecting to other AD domains. Only my default domain has a valid
sequence number. All the other domains are

puppet, mongel, nginx and new nodes
Hey All,
This is probably a gotcha of some kind. That is to say I''ve missed a configuration somewhere. I''ve recently moved over to using mongrel as the puppet server type and having nginx proxy to one of four mongrel instances.
What I''m seeing though is that when I try to run a new node (one that has been created post moving to mongrel/nginx) is that it returns with the

Samba Authentication Using Novell eDirectory via LDAP
Hello,
We have a RHEL 4 Update 4 server that was configured to store its
Samba passwords in eDirectory via LDAP. This was accomplished by
adding the following three lines to the [Global] section of smb.conf:
ldap admin dn = cn=admin,o=budget
ldap suffix = o=budget
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldaps://SERVER_NAME:636
After adding the lines and saving the file the admin password is

I''m looking for a way to get puppet to define nagios hostgroupescalations. Is this possible and if so, what is the syntax?
Thanks,

After some help with Samba and LDAP
Hey Folks,
I'm running into what appears to be a known configuration problem
though am at a lost end with trying to resolve it.
The problem is that when following the SAMBA and LDAP configuration
guide on http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/3.0._Initialization_LDAP_Database
I'm getting errors running the ldiff part.
The error that is occuring is due to the sambaDomainName.

Question about switching from Windows 2k Server to SAMBA 3 under Centos
Greetings List,
I'll begin by outlining what it is that I have to do. First, I have a
windows 2k server that is currently on its last legs. It holds a list
of users, groups and shares that are still required after the
migration to a Linux based server.
I've heard of a command called 'vampire' that extracts the required
users and groups, though as of yet have been

Bind, DHCPD and Samba
Hey Folks,
I currently have bind and dhcpd configured to allow for dynamic updates, though when I try to manually add in the srv records required for correctly identifying the samba pdc, they get overwritten when bind starts.
How can I modify the bind configuration so that it writes the correct information? Also, is there a way to have samba write the correct information to bind?

I reread your initial post and noticed something that I missed earlier,
you had in smb.conf:
??????? idmap uid = 16777216-33554431
??????? idmap gid = 16777216-33554431
Yet, you were getting results like this:
id user01
uid=2001107(user01) gid=2000513(domain users)

Unable to get primary group information when using AD authentication with samba-4.10.4
'wbinfo -a' is basically the same as logging in, but you should be able
to get a users primary group without the user logging in, this will
depend on what you mean by 'primary group'. On Windows, every users
primary group is 'Domain Users' and when you make a Unix computer a
domain member, Unix users get the same primary group by default. Before
Samba 4.6.0 there was
