Loading syslinux native from a USB HDD
Hi there guys!
I want to set up Puppy-Linux to run off a 2GB USB key-drive in native
mode (I.e. not as a virtual machine, which I'm finding runs too slow on
my system, under XP.)
To test it out, I want to run off a 150GB USB HDD. Now this drive is
NTFS formatted and way bigger than the 1GB file structure limit that I
read about in the Syslinux documentation. There's only one

Cluster Size discrepancy between FAT32 and NTFS
Hi,
I am not an engineer or linux expert but I have been using syslinux to boot
live disk filesets (extracted from iso's) residing on fat32 and NTFS volumes.
In FAT32 there has been no problem going with larger cluster sizes up to the nominal maximum of 64K
however, with NTFS it has not been possible to exceed the cluster size of 4096.
With NTFS formatted using clusters of 8192 or larger,

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Dear Christian,
Thanks for your feedback.
The HDD will not accept larger than 4GB (as its in FAT format). Its a new
external HDD. Thinking of the best format(that would work with Mac , Win
and Linux) .seems like a challenge.
What's your view on NTFS? And why not exFAT?
Thanks
Kevin

Samba access of FAT32 mounted file system on FreeBSD
Hi,
Firstly background -
FreeNAS 0.7.2 (FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE-p1)
Samba 3.5.3
1TB disk, 500GB FAT32 (/dev/da1s1) + 500GB NTFS (/dev/da1s4)
Just to clear it up, I'm using FAT32 and NTFS because this is actually a
media center box that functions as an external HDD when plugged into USB.
I'm using it as a storage device because its quite large a disk, but may
from time to time use it as a

I can still read&write on the external hdd and on my laptop (which I
have my gentoo there) I can't do anything on / because its filled up
with /proc/kcore after "rsync failed"
rsync -aAXv

sending the laptop back with the HDD.

I then used the gnome desktop to move the desired files to
trash. Now I wish to delete the contents of the

If your hard disk is making scary noises that could be the drive starting
to fail have you tried to determine if the drive is still good or on the
way out?

random file corruption on NTFS
Hi,
We are using Rsync version 2.6.8 protocol version 29 on a winNT box to
backup a linux (RedHat 9.0) box (same version of rsync) and everynight a
different file on the NT server is reported as being corrupt, there are no
errors in the rsync logs on either side. NT Event log records:
Event Type: Error

NTFS HDD not detected on Centos 6.9 (solved)
Hello
I believe Centos is a new chance to improve,
so
since I am the smallest in knowledge of the people that may be helping you,
I want to share what happened recently.
*After install the OS, I wanted to access info stored in an externar USB
HDD, which was not detected*
*so after just searching how to make it, I found the next lines which made
it work as butter.*

Win2k Roaming Profiles problems under NTFS
Hi there!
I have a Samba 2.2.2 PDC on linux 2.4.13 with ACL (acl.bestbits.at) support
installed. There seems to be a problem with Roaming Profiles. Win2k with
local NTFS filesystem will never delete roaming profiles (yes, I have
regedited the DeleteRoamingCache to 1). In fact, any time TheUser logs back
in, a new folder named TheUser.OURDOMAIN.??? (where ? is an integer) will
be created,

Strange Samba permissions on vfat (fat32) volume
I'm running Samba on Ubuntu server. I know, perhaps it is not related with Ubuntu Server 8.04, but rather
with Samba itself, but I thought perhaps someone has similar
experience...
I have a couple of shares on Samba on a vfat (fat32) volume. As
everybody knows Linux permissions does not work on vfat, except on
mount folder where vfat partition is mounted. I though that is really

Question of syslinux chainloading
So when you boot from only your hard drive attached, it is the primary
and only drive.
It loads the master boot record that load the NT Loader boot code that
is then configured to load the operating system from the primary
partition on the primary drive.
When you boot from the USB drive, you make it the Primary drive. You
then tell it to load the MBR fromt the secondary drive. The secondary

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hello,
Yesterday I tried to back up a 40GB maildir .
I tried to move the maildir from home to external HDD but failed. Decided
then to compress it(which took several hours). Now changing the disk format
from FAT to exFAT to allow the transfer for the large compressed file.
How does one back up emails on a external drive?
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

winefile shows drives as NTFS - is this correct?
I am having consistent difficulty with write access and installing
applications. The errors show up as write protect errors or not enough
disk space errors. 'winefile' shows the disks as being NTFS. Is this
correct or is it a winefile anomaly? Are these conditions related? What
is the correct file system type? How can this be managed? 'winecfg' does
not seem to allow

Changing from NTFS to ext3
I want to convert all my NTFS partitions to ext3 since I'm no longer
running Windows, at least on my main machine at home. I'm planning to
tar the NTFS partitions to an existing ext3, reformat the partition as
ext3 and untar it back.
What is the best way to accomplish step two of this - reformatting the
partition? I've only done this so far during the installation phase,
and that
