Another issue to tackle - I have an external 1 TB drive (2 500GB on a RAID). When I plug it into the server, it sees, via /var/log/messages, that a USB device was plugged in, but that's it. fdisk -l doesn't see it. dmesg doesn't do much, either. Both are wired to a 100 Mb network, together with a Windows 7 box. In principle I believe is not a hardware issue. Sc847 36 drive config. Wd RE3 1tb drives. Areca and lsi hba. 3 or so drives would completely hang under any kind of decent load. Replaced with lsi 1068 and chenbro sas espanders and replaced the supermicro backplane with the -A version (direct port) and its been riPping along for well over a year. We replaced the 3gb backplane 2x and exact same failures. Supermicro refuses to concede a problem
