Per-user home filesystems and OS-X Leopard anomaly
I encountered an issue that people using OS-X systems as NFS clients
need to be aware of. While not strictly a ZFS issue, it may be
encounted most often by ZFS users since ZFS makes it easy to support
and export per-user filesystems. The problem I encountered was when
using ZFS to create exported per-user filesystems and the OS-X
automounter to perform the necessary mount magic.

R CMD check in R-3.0.0 gives warnings
I am running R CMD check on my package nleqslv with R-3.0.0 beta (2013-03-33 r62364) on Mac OS X 10.6.8
In contrast with R-2.15.3 R CMD check now issues a note for
- Mercurial version control files .hgignore, .hgtags and directory .hg. These are however included in .hidden_file_exclusions.
- typical Mac Finder files .DS_Store
All of these are ignored when executing R CMD check --as-cran.

Macintosh rsync: Inconsistent Behaviour: Hints Appreciated
I have a problem with rsync on macintosh copying files that have not been
updated. Despite careful reading of the archives, I can't find an
explanation (or a fix), but I strongly suspect I'm just missing something
that an expert will recognise instantly... Your assistance would be greatly
appreciated.

OS X Clients Can't Create Sub-Directories
I'm running samba on a local linux server, with a bunch of shares. Over the last several years, this has worked perfectly in our heterogenous network of OS X and Windows. All my windows clients still work perfectly - my users can mount the samba shares and create, rename, move etc files and folders.
However, recently (starting yesterday) my OS X clients are unable to rename any sub

Mac client
I'm trying to copy files to a Samba share that I have set up on a linux debian
machine from a Mac running OS X, using samba 3.0.24.
The Mac complains that there is something wrong with the file name, and then
refuses to copy, and the operation leaves a zero-byte file with the same name on
the samba share.
It lets me log in nicely through the Mac File Finder.
I've just spent a couple

Samba 4.1.11 crashes sporadically
Hi,
I thought I should share this unusual behaiviour of samba 4.1.11. All of
a sudden while I tried to delete a Folder via samba on a share it
crashed. I was using Mac OSx's V 10.9.4 internal samba client (regular
"CMD+K" mount via Finder).

git .gitignore vs exclude file
I am a bit confused about the different purpose of each.
I think the .gitignore file belongs in the root of my project and is
project specific, but that also seems to be the reason for the .git/
info/exclude file
what happens if they conflict? which one wins.
What is standard practice?
My exclude file looks like this
# git-ls-files --others --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude
log/*.log

osx 10.6 strange rsync errors
Hi All,
I have been getting reports from users of backuplist+, my wrapper application for rsync (currently with build of 3.0.6), about odd behavior after updating to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Basically: the problem occurs backing up a directory to a local mounted network volume. Previously all worked fine but after updating to 10.6 there are reports that no files get copied and the destination fills

Cannot change directory permissions
Hello,
I occasionally need to remove the write permissions from directories inside a share to prevent users from accidentally deleting files inside that directory.
My problem is that I neither can view nor can change the permissions of directories on my shares.
Curiously enough viewing and changing permissions of files in the same shares works without a problem.
Is there anything I

macintosh file clutter on samba filesystems.
I have a client who has a bunch of macs accessing some samba shares, and
they write these ._filename and .DS_STORE files all over the place, he
would perfer it to not write these files at all. Anyone ran into this
issue? what would be the best way to prevent these files from getting
written onto the shares? veto?

vfs_fruit: xattr imcompatible with netatalk
Hi.
I'm testing samba 4.2.0 vfs_fruit on Fedora Server 22-alpha.
I confirmed that ResourceFork and FinderInfo are compatible with
Netatalk 3.1.7. However, EAs are incompatible.
The character ":" in EA name is wrong.
The EAs are not seen from clients.

Samba4 bug - "mount error(5): Input/output error"
Hi Rowland,
do you maybe have any idea what could potentially cause this bug?
smbclient thrwos me back a
mount error(5): Input/output error
when I try to mount the remote smbFS. It doesn't happen with my MacOSx
and Windows 7 as client but it happens with Linux OSs and with a Konica
Minolta copy machine with a scanner to samba function. The first try to
mount fails with the above error.

Windows 10 in Samba 3 domain: netlogon share access denied
Hi,
I got the same problem with Build 10162. I dont think it's an Samba
issue. It seems that Windows 10 dont like "\\....\netlogon". Our Samba
3.5.6 PDC works like a charm for win 7. From my Win10 PC i can access
everything except \\dc1\netlogon
Symptoms:
Accessing \\dc1\netlogon -> Auth fail
Accessing \\dc1\netlogon2 -> Works (same config!!!)
Accessing \\dc1\s1\netlogon

Cannot change directory permissions
Hi Rowland,
when saying 'I' I theoretically meant any user that has write access to the share.
It should be possible to right click the directory in windows, the go to security tab and remove the write permissions on the directory.
This behaviour already works with files, I'm trying to figure out how to make it also work for directories.
Greetings,
Felix

Odd Mac OSX 10.6 error on Samba share
Hi All,
I've done quite a bit of research on this one and if I'm honest about the
cause of this "fault" it's probably because I'm trying to do too much
"outside the box" :) Nevertheless I enjoy the challenge so here is the
scenario:
I have a Samba Service (v3.2.5) providing file shares running on Debian 2.6.
The samba server uses a Windows Domain server for

Debian + Samba 3.0 + Mac OS X 10.[2-3] -> insufficient privileges
hi all,
I've read trough the list and see discussions with similar problems.
I've setup a file server and users can connect to it via SMB/CIFS.
Windows users just happy. The problem starts with the Mac users.
All Mac users are using OS X (versions 10.2,10.3).
I'm vetoing several files right now, permission inheriting turned on,
I've forced the create mode and directory mode to
