samba ACL open-for-delete problem
Hi, all
It seems that samba-3.4.1 still has something wrong with ACL for
open-for-delete operation. I give a group of users full access, which
means rwx permission, to a directory and make this as the default ACL
for this directory. Then I found that I can do anthing as a member of
that group but deleting files and this directory.
After skiming through its source code, I did not find any ACL

change password failed
I have configured samba as a PDC for our lab. I wish that users can
change their password on any windows client machine of this domain.
Now the users can logon to the domain on windows client machine, but
when they press Ctrl+Alt+Del to change their domain password, the
operation failed.
Checking samba's log file, I found that 'auth 1 type failed'. I don't
know what this meanes.

Optimizing Samba to stream movies
I am sharing some of my personal videos on a local network via Ubuntu
9.10/Samba 3.42 on my wired PC to wireless Windows XP and Vista users
with a 802.11g router in between. Some of the movies can stream fast
enough to watch uninterrupted, while others seem to skip often.
I searched online to see any optimization techniques and found this is
a popular one for the /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

Issue joining a PC to a Samba domain from a subnet other the one that Samba PDC
Hello,
Thanks in advance for taking the time to look at this issue. We are
currently experiencing an issue with PC's not being able to join a Samba PDC
controlled domain when the PC's are located outside of the subnet that the
Samba PDC is part of. The PC's are located in the same physical building as
the PDC, connecting over a Cisco VLAN to the Samba PDC subnet. For example,

SAMBA as PDC - Pls Help!
Hello guys!
I'm newbie in Linux and particularly in SAMBA. You can call me
Microsoft centric but am veering away with MS and so my boss who wishes
for me to establish a SAMBA PDC Server who will authenticate users,

I've read a good number of SAMBA-HOW-TOS but unfortunately i'm not

Samba 3.0.28a onwards "allow trusted domains" has no effect?
Hi,
I've noticed a discrepancy between Samba Version 3.0.28a and Version
3.0.24 in relation to Winbind rid idmap and trusted domains behaviour.
I have an environment with 2 domains linked via a trust, an Active
Directory domain and an NT4 domain. On 3.0.24 the rid backend seems to
work fine, but on 3.0.28a it shows OTHERDOMAIN\domain admins instead of
the primary domain's domain

Vista and UNC solved
For those having problems with Vista, and unc paths showing up empty,
I can confirm that:
[global]
host msdfs = no
fixes the problem. This is on 3.0.24 with all patches. Note that I am
not using Dfs root shares or the like. YMMV
Hope this helps someone.
Cheers!

Vista SP1, Server 2008 joining NT4/Samba Domain
Hello!
It seems, that Vista SP1 and Server 2008 cannot join an NT4/Samba-domain.
Vista once could join before SP1, if one did some modifications to the
system (LAN Manager authentication level, Encryption of secure channel).
But these workarounds do not seem to work with SP1 anymore.
Microsoft points out that joining NT4-domains with Vista SP1 and Server
2008 is not supported/tested

Nagging performance issues with Vista
Hi All,
I've got some performance issues with Samba and Vista that I just can't
seem to figure out. Googling and fiddling has all been in vain up until
now, so I'm not sure what I can do other than wait for Samba 4, but
maybe someone here can find something I've missed.
First off, the server is an Athlon 64 1.8GHz running Gentoo 2006.1,
tested with both Samba 3.0.24 and

Downgrade TDB files?
Hi.
I've tried Samba 3.4.3 and it upgraded my passdb.tdb file. After testing
I concluded that I'm not going to upgrade to 3.4.3 yet, because 'getent
passwd' was broken in recent BlastWave Solaris packages:
http://wiki.blastwave.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=447&start=0
Now, after I downgraded the Samba back to 3.0.32, client connections
started to malfunction. I saw

recycle module creates empty files (0 KB)
Hi,
I have a strange behaviour when creating new files. When opening word,
excel, ppt or txt to create a new document (e.g. I use the word icon on
the desktop to start word) and save the file to the home share H: an
empty (0 KB) file with the same name as the saved document is created in
the trash folder. Why this second empty file in the trash folder?
Going directly to the home share H: and

Vista, 35 second login delay, domain only.
Hello,
I've spent time trying to find an answer to this one, but no luck.
The main problem is that when any user logs into Vista with a domain
account, there will be ~35 second delay where the system just sits at
the welcome screen with the spinning circle. (after typing their
password)
This happens on Vista sp1, and earlier. Also on Samba 3.0.24, 3.0.28 and 3.2.

Samba 3.0.28/3.0.32
I've looked at the CentOS docs-list as well as the Wiki as I was interested
in Samba.
On one CentOS box I've got 3.0.32 (the latest bug-fixed version from Samba.org)
and on another I've got 3.0.28 (the latest from upstream). The docs look almost
the same and the docs refer to security = share. However 3.0.32 comes with a
blank smb.conf making it harder to get a secure server up and

Error on Samba 3.2.6 installation
When I installed Samba 3.2.6 from Sernet, I got the following error:
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.54116: line 2: fg: no job control
error: %postun(samba3-3.0.32-36.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
The error happens when installing the samba and winbind RPMs.
I got the same error when installing the previous version 3.2.5 and
perhaps 3.2.4. The "rpm-tmp.number" was different in those cases,

Vista (pre-installed OEM editions) creating new files or folders on network shares
Hi,
This post is to prevent other people that are having trouble with Vista
clients from going down a blind alley investigating problems in their samba
configurations.
After some research I have found (see link below) that there is a general
problem for pre-installed OEM editions of Vista Business (and possibly other
vista versions) in creating files and folders on network shares.

Samba over SSH to Windows Vista
After having scoured the net for a way to do SMB over SSH with Windows,
I've tried everything I have found and I still can't get it to work.
I'm using Windows Vista as the client and FC6 with Samba 3.0.24-1 as the
server. I have set up a share and can successfully connect to that share
with no ssh tunnel.
I would like to tunnel SMB over SSH, so here is what I have tried:

Permissions problem with Windows Vista / 7 clients, Debian Samba 3.4.7 server
I'm having a very strange permissions problem with Samba 3.4.7 (installed
via backports.org) running on Debian Lenny:
If a Windows 7 or Windows Vista client tries to use Windows Explorer to
access a user's home directory with permissions 0700, the client gets a
permission denied error.
If the directory is made world readable, it works. (For one user, group
readable also works. For
