high cpu load
I think I have narrowed down the problem why smbd processes are soaking
up so much CPU on our file server. Here are some selected samples from
strace output as I attached to the offending smbd process:

I took three sample snapshots, each lasted for several seconds, and I
took them
minutes apart from each other. I noticed many lines involved stat'ing

more smbd CPU mystery
Well I have determined that everytime someone logs in/logs out
of a windows box in our lab *ALL* of the files in "My Directory"
are copied from/to the file server to the local client. Needless to
say this is retarded and needs to stop. The local sys admin needs
to perform some windows voodoo to redirect this directory.
Still this brings the mystery as to why smbd would take up so

Problem with Share Size
Hi all,
I have a problem with samba : I can create files, but can't create directories.
The server has many shares, on seperated disks.
We consider two of them : one 2Tb share and one share with more than 7Tb.
Samba configuration is good, and works on many other servers, and on this one except for the large share. Permissions are correctly setted up too.
I can read/write files and

3.6.10 file handle leak under ancient 32-bit kernel
Hello,
I've come across a curious issue with
Samba 3.6.10.
When running 'emacs' version
GNU Emacs 23.3.1 (i386-mingw-nt6.0.6002) of 2011-03-10 on 3249CTO
on Windows Server 2008 SP2 x64 and issuing
a file "revert" of one sort or another
against a Samba-served file, the 'smbd'
process leaks two or three handles.
Eventually, when 16k handles are open,
this causes

Thunderbird, there is no new emails in Inbox. Dovecot createa a lock file
/var/spool/mail/<user>.lock. It never completes openning Inbox. If closing
the mail client, the open imap session does not get closed, nor the lock
file get deleted.
Here are the errors in log:

Saving files with MS Word to samba3 server is very slow!
Hi!
I'm currently hunting a strange problem and looking for help!
I have a samba3 fileserver (currently samba-3.0.20b, but problem can
be reproduced with samba-3.0.7, but _not_ with samba2 like 2.2.8a),
and I see performance problems when writing files with MS word 2002 SP3
from a NT4.0 (SP6a) workstation. Saving even the smallest file takes more
than 10 seconds! Copying files with Windows

Samba daemons hang trying to lock locking.tdb
Hi,
A day or so after starting samba, some daemons (diferent forks) begin to
hang. Then, the WinXP clients hang too completely.
When I try to figure out what is happen, I see that smbd daemons hangs
always in a fcntl64() call:
# strace -p 6414
Process 6414 attached - interrupt to quit
fcntl64(14, F_SETLKW64, {type=F_WRLCK, whence=SEEK_SET, start=3684, len=1} <unfinished ...>

Problems in SAMBA 3.3 to 4.0 migration
Hi, Rowland, and thanks for the reply.
The PDC OS is Slackware 13. The BDC OS is Slackware 14.
The choice to use Samba 4.0 was merely due to its inclusion on the Slackware
14 distro. I'll worry about upgrading that once I have the migration
complete.
I will post the two machine's respective smb.conf's later today.

Samba 2.0.6-3 (productive env.) slow down dramticaly
Hello together,
since today morning I have an massive performance issue with samba
2.0.6-3 (Debian - Testing-Tree) in my samba production environment.
Samba responds very slowly within the logon process (2-3 Minutes for
each line in the netlogon.cmd). Later during normal operations opening
from files works very slowly and often breaks connection.
There is no cpu or memory load on the system.

hanging smbd(s).....
dear all,
the following problem occurs periodically (appr. once a week) here:
the number of smbd(s) will dramatically rise (up to 500 and more...)
when having a look what the proccesses are doing i only see that they
are waiting for getting a lock:
fcntl64(4, F_SETLKW64, {type=F_WRLCK, whence=SEEK_SET, start=240, len=1}, 0xbfefa5c0) = 0
filedescriptor 4 is bound to my secrets.tdb !

Domain Trust and smbclient error.
I am trying to get a W2K server to trust a samba 3.0 server.
I followed the directions in the InterdomainTrusts.html file and receive
an error that the domain is not found when trying to trust it.
my samba server is configured to use pam to authenticate. I had to add a
user named "w2kdomain$" on the machine before I could run smbpasswd -a -i
w2kdomain. Once I did that, it created the

smbd hung processes - Samba 3.0.7
We've seen Samba crash and burn twice in the last 48 hours - it just
started happening, and we have no idea what might be causing it. I'm
hoping that someone will recognize this problem.
Platform: we are running RedHat Enterprise Server, with Samba 3.0.7.
We're using security=domain in an old-style NT4 domain environment.
The symptom that we're seeing is that the number of

Newbie: unable to access mailbox more than once
Hello,
I'm using dovecot as a mail relay so that I can back up my providers
IMAP mail locally. I'm impressed how easy this was to set up, but I'm
having a quirk that I would like help with, if possible.
There are many weak links in my set-up chain, if you will, but I think
I've narrowed the problem. I'll describe my set-up anyway. I'm running

high load printing with 3.2.15
Hi,
I am still struggling with the printing in a AD2008 R2 environment I
changed to 3.2.15 by now. Still very slow, I am running on solaris 10. Not
sure if my clients are so chatty by now but it is really killing any
performance. Using truss I see loads of:

Add new user -> swat core dump
Hi there,
I have a problem when I try to create a new user with swat. I use binaries of
Samba 2.2.2 coming from www.samba.org, or from www.sunfreeware.com
on Solaris 2.6 and on 8. I compiled the sources and the result is the same.
When I click on "Add New User" (Server Password Management), I receive
a nearly blank page: I can only see the samba gif on top and the user is not
