split auth from other logging
I hoped I don't have to switch to syslog logging. Well, anyway.
I changed
10-logging.conf:
syslog_facility = uucp
and commented out the other log lines.
rsyslog.d/50-default.conf:
uucp.debug -/var/log/dovecot/debug.log
uucp.info -/var/log/dovecot/dovecot.log
uucp.warn -/var/log/dovecot/warn.log

Minicom 1.75 Vulnerability
hi ppl,
well, here is another standard buffer overrun vulnerability, which may
sometimes lead to root compromise (not always. not in new distributions,
fortunately). Current Slackware and current RedHat don''t install minicom
suid root, only sgid/uucp, which is not *that* dangerous. But when you
build minicom from source, it asks you to do "chmod +s" on it.

split auth from other logging
This works for splitting off lmtp traffic, for instance.
syslog_facility = uucp
rsyslog:

uucp.=debug -/var/log/dovecot/debug.log
uucp.=info -/var/log/dovecot/dovecot.log

Monitoring slaves via dummy-ups
Hello,
I wondered how folks monitored slaves.
In my case, I am using Nagios and the check_ups plugin. It seems to work fine but being new to nut, I'm seeking confirmation that this is a sane approach.
The goal: confirm the slaves have contact with the master.
The environment:
* FreeBSD 12.1
* nut-2.7.4 installed from package
Background:
I am replacing an APC 2200 UPS (still in use) with

User access to /dev/ttyUSB0
I have been trying to get an EVDO modem to work with Centos 5. I can make it
dial out with wvdial only when I'm the root user. Otherwise I get this error:
Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
I added the user to the uucp group.

killing UUCP
Hey *, I'm getting an audit coming down the pipes and I have 2
4.6 release boxes to clean up. I say "clean up" because they
have some requirements that I missed despite due diligence. My
specific question is: To what extent can I get rid of UUCP?
Aside from the SUID/SGID stuff that pops up via my finds, I
simply see no reason to have any UUCP stuff on these boxes. Is
this stuff

Trouble syncing Palm via USB
Hi,
I'm having trouble getting my Palm to sync with jpilot on my Centos
system via USB. When I sync, I get this error in jpilot:
pi_accept Illegal seek
Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_PI_ACCEPT
Finished
I have jpilot syncing fine with this Palm over the network, BTW. For
USB, I set things up for udev as described on various websites. Here
are the relevant ports & symlink (created

Permission denied on mounted CIFS share
We have this situation:
System A (running openSUSE 11.0 with samba-3.2.3-0.1) exports user home shares (e.g. for user sledz).
On system B (running openSUSE 11.0 with samba-3.2.3-0.1) user hydra mounts the home share from sledz at system A with this command:
sudo mount -t cifs -o user=sledz,uid=hydra //A/sledz localdir
A subdir of this directory seen from A looks like this:
sledz@A> ls

yum hangs when installing uucp
Hello,
I've got a CentOS 5 box. I want to install the uucp rpm to give access
to the cu command. I do a yum -y install uucp and yum is hanging on the
transaction test. I get the file downloaded fine, but on transaction test
yum freezes and i have to kill it's pid to stop it. Any ideas?
I'm looking for a program for serial terminals.
Thanks.
Dave.

ownership of pid directory
Hello all,
Some time ago, you all were very helpful in getting nut running on an OpenBSD
system, using--for what it's worth--a CyberPower 1500AVR.
So I finally got my FreeBSD system's UPS, also a CyberPower 1500AVR, within
reach of its serial cable and I'm trying to get nut running here. I'm going
nuts.
Basically, I copied the OpenBSD configuration over to the FreeBSD system

Lost setting up IAXmodem after drive crash
A few weeks ago, I lost my Trixbox that was all set up with Hylafax and
IAXmodem.
I am trying to set it up for
email > procmail > faxmail > iaxmodem > asterisk >sipext > ATA (with
attached fax).
I have followed all the instructions on creating the IAX extension and
configuring the IAXmodem config file. I can see the connection in Asterisk:

Rsync doesn't log properly when in standalone daemon mode
I'm trying to get over an exasperating problem with rsync 2.5.7, but
I'm not making any headway. The nut of the problem is that the
rsync daemon seemingly ignores the "syslog facility" configuration
when running in standalone daemon mode, as opposed to being started
with inetd.
So, for example, if I have my configuration file with
[global]
pid file = /etc/rsync/rsyncd.pid

Blazer_usb Permissions problem: Input/output error
Merry Christmas to you all and best wishes!
I ran into exactly the same problem as described.
OS: FreeBSD 9.0-Rel
UPS: Eaton E-Series NV 600H
NUT: from Ports, nut-2.6.5_1
driver: blazer_usb
I am sure the problem is not permission-related as it occurs even when
the driver runs as root.
My tested recipe for USB permissions is:
1. run usbconfig to find where the device is connected. In my case:

getent shows only local information
Hello
I have installed Redhat Linux 9 and Samba 3.0.2a from the Source.
I have two Win2003 server for the domain "sambadomain.local":
PDC: rootserver
10.10.1.1 Subnet 255.255.0.0
DNS-Master: dnsserver
10.10.1.2 Subnet 255.255.0.0
Runs also dhcp and wins
I made the references to these two Servers (DNS, DHCP) in my Linux-Server.

Unloaded the kmod - did not change anything. But I will configure
devd not to load uhid.ko ever, just to be sure. You are implying Ithe uhid driver

Custom udev rules to override defaults?
I'm trying to work out how to set up a custom udev rule to override
permissions on serial ports (/dev/ttyS* and /dev/ttyUSB*) on CentOS 5.3
The default rule, in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules has the line:
KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0660"
and I would like the mode to be 0666

shape downstream of a ppp link
Hi,
is it anyhow possible to tell the other end of the ppp link how he should
queue the packages? I have a ppp link to my isp and would like to control
the order of packages send to me. I would like to give uucp a lower
priority than http. Is this possible? Has ppp any special features to
control such things?
Bye, Jörg.

getent not working (again)
Hi all,
after I searched the internet about a week now I can't find an answer to my
problem:
The company I work for is using a Windows 2003 Domain using the Windows
Services for UNIX (SFU) and NIS. We are using two Domain Controllers that
are hosting the ADS.
Now I want to use Samba and NFS to implement a file server for our mixed
client enviroment: There will be Linux, HP UNIX, Solaris,
