creating a master share
I am trying to create a master share that contains all the other shares. I created a group that needs read+write permission to all the other shares. However, rather than adding this group in each share configuration, I was wondering if there is a way to overwrite the permission. I tried this but gave read-only access. Also in the linux level, I don't have this master group as the owner. Any

mount read/write ntfs via samba
Until now, we've been using samba to push out unix files to windows users. With Security = domain, this works perfectly. Now we'd like to go the other way ie mount on the linux side our PC files. Using mount -t smbfs -username=administrator //pc-server/users /PCuser works but all files appear to be owned by root so users can't write to their own files. I can add dmask=777,

Somewhat bizzare share issue
I have 19 servers with this smb.conf share definition working: [export] comment = Exported Files path = /tmp/export guest ok = Yes On the 20th server however, this just doesn't want to work. I've gone through the basics of guest access and permissions more than a few times trying to figure this one out. Approaching this from another angle, I tried the following

Any possibility to apply policies on WinXP machines using samba 3.2.3 ? monitoring file access levels?
I've got a paranoid client who has a samba server on a small LAN who wants to know if and when any of his employees 'transfer' (read, copy off etc) any more than a certain threshold of data a day from the server, I think he's worried that some employee may grab a lot of stuff off the server and then share it with his competition. I tried to explain that this wasn't a very

How does the "guest account" param work?
smb.conf states "This user must exist in the passwd file, but does not require a valid login" What exactly does this mean? As I understand it, adding a user with 'smbpasswd -a nobody' automatically gives it a valid login. My reasons for asking are; I added myself to passdb.tdb with my passwd. I added the 'nobody' user to passdb.tdb with no passwd. I then logged in to

Samba & Vista [SOLVED]

The only way that I know of to really change a No, this does not happen on Windows 2000. Note that I'm still running Windows 2000 because it runs very nicely under virtualization with only 256 MB allocated to the VM. ;) -- For a good laugh,

how to setup an open share?
Using samba-3.2.4, on Fedora 9. I want to create a universally writeable, browseable share. If you're on the network, you can use it. No passwords, any user. Which I tried to do with this smb.conf, which doesn't work from Windows: [global] workgroup = NEW_NET server string = asterisk server in closet netbios name = Video_Server_in_Closet bind interfaces

error 1310 when installing to a Samba share
I'm trying to install some income tax software to a Samba (Debian 3.2.5 i386) share and I'm getting the above error. I've tried resolving it through the Windows knowledge base, which suggested it was the Windows Installer running as a local system account but even granting guest access to the directory and granting everyone rwx rights didn't help. They also suggested

Samba share of a NFS mount
I've got a NFS directory that's shared among my RHEL5 servers that I'd like to give access to a couple of Win2K servers, also. The easiest way to do so is to NFS mount the directory on my Samba server, and export the directory as a Samba share. It works. Kind of. But it redefines 'slow'. Copying the file from a normal Samba share takes under 10 seconds on a slow network:

"map to guest" in share definition?
Is it possible to use "map to guest" in a single share? We have 2 or 3 shares where I want this behavior, but for most I would like to not use it due to issues with home directories with bad users. I would simply try moving that line to a share definition to see what happens, but I don't want to break a live server to test (and have no spare Samba boxes right now). Tim B
