shadow_copy script example leads to system hang?
I don't know if this was present (maybe not?) when the script was written, but
the script for taking a snapshot in the instructions for shadow_copy: that looks
like this:

lvcreate -L10M -s -n $SNAPNAME /dev/Home/lvol0
xfs_freeze -u /home/
mkdir /home/shadow_share/@GMT-$SNAPNAME

Shadow copy format for snapshots and Samba
Samba has a shadow_copy module to serve read-only snapshots to windows clients. I tried to use snapshotting in freebsd 5 (haven''t tried 6), but couldn''t get it stable. I''m really looking forward to getting it going on Solaris.
Anyway you can read about the format of the link here:

access samba 3.0 shares from Win2K, Win3K, WinXPProf. using netbios name
Hi:
I have a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Ed. as Domain controller, an
its
current domain functional level is 'Windows Server 2003'.
Also, I have a RedHat Linux 7.3 server with SaMBa (tested with rpm
samba-3.0.0-2, and compiling the samba source code).
I'd joined the linux server to the AD tree without problems, access from
it to the Win2003 shared resources too, but I have

freezeing the ext3 filesystem
Hi,
I discovered that SGI XFS for Linux har a utility called xfs_freeze,
which freezes the filsystem and makes sure that the filesystem is
consistant. It is a bit like a mount -o remount,ro but it does not fail
when applications have open files.
When we take snapshots of our XFS volume, we do "xfs_freeze -f /mnt/foo;
lvcreate -s /dev/vg_foo/bar /dev/vg_foo/bar-snapshot;xfs_freeze -u

backup disk/state
Hi there,
i am trying to understand something that bothering me for some time now.
A running domain has two things that someone needs to take backup.
So there is the disk and the state.
Using snapshots as checkpoint someone can take the disk snapshot
but i cant understand how to "transfer" the saved state from "backup ed" disk.

Re: Virsh snapshots
Thanks for your answer,
I am trying to make a snapshot of whole virtual machine (disk, CPU
state, memory). But I need to make this snapshot in matter of seconds.
I have already try to create snapshot of disk, which is not problem. I
use qcow2 format, and create new disk image using original disk image as
backing file. But still I am not able to assign state of vm with new disk.
I have found

Xen backups using LVM Snapshots
Hi all,
I am running Xen 3.2-1 / 2.6.18 on Debian Etch (Dom0).
I setup a Dom0 with several DomUs (Linux). Each DomU disk is a LV partition. I have been seeing a few mails about backups and LVM and just wanted to make sure that what I am doing is correct.
Each DomU with a database has a cron that dumps the db with mysqldump. Later on, Dom0 will do an LVM Snapshot of all DomUs and then do a

Wishlist items
I''ve been saving up a few wishlist items for zfs. Time to share.
1. A verbose (-v) option to the zfs commandline.
In particular zfs sometimes takes a while to return from zfs snapshot -r
tank/volumes at foo in the case where there are a great many iscsi shared
volumes underneath. A little progress feedback would go a long way. In
general I feel the zfs tools lack sufficient feedback

LVM Snapshot Create Error
Just discovered that on CentOS 4.1 when you issue the command:
lvcreate -s -n temp -L2G /dev/vgname/lvname
to create a snapshot, you get the error message:
snapshot: Required device-mapper target(s) not detected in your kernel
I've checked and recheck my spelling and tried using the device created
under /dev/mapper. I've tried it on both x86_64 and on i386. Works as

RFC for new zfs replication tool
Please note: this is a "cross posting" of sorts, from a post I made;
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.unix.solaris/browse_thread/thread/a8bd4aab3918b7a0/528dacb05c970748
It was suggested that I mention it here. so I am doing so.
For convenience, here is mostly a duplicate of what I posted, with a
couple of minor updates.
Please note: I''m not asking for technical help on

Snapshot system: really confusing.
Greetings,
I am developing a platform for test and debug use.
The typical scenario I want to realize is the following:
I run a .qcow2 image via QEMU-KVM, the running OS is not relevant.
I want to take several snapshots of both Disk and RAM status; same file,
separate files doesn't matter.
I just need a way to have consistent information about them (better with
XML description) and the data

Deleting and coalescing live snapshots
All,
I have a service that takes new live KVM snapshots Si regularly, keeps a
fixed number N (Si ,..,Si-N+1), and therefore needs to delete Si-N in
this cycle.
Until libvirt includes support for this capability that is said to be
available in qemu, what is a safe workflow to delete old live KVM
snapshots w/o losing data. Do I need to pause/shut down the VM?
The development environment is

Time attributes in LDAP SAM
I am updateding my LDAP presentation
(ftp://kalamazoolinux.org/pub/pdf/ldapv3.pdf) to include a section on
the Samba 2.2.x LDAP backend. But I can't find any definititive
documentation on the "time" attributes: pwdLastChange, pwdMustChange.
Either how the time is encoded or exactly what they mean. I've seen
post saying they are hexidecimal (although they don't look it)

Samba as fileserver in an Windows AD Domain
Hallo,
I tried to setup a SuSE10.2 with samba 3.0.23d (but the same trouble with
SuSE11.1).
I got a valid Kerberos Ticket and joined successfully the domain (with net
join).
Users and group are displayed with wbinfo -u / -g . I could also verify
accounts with wbinfo -a user%pass.
When I tried to access the shares, the dialog apears to give the
credentials. It doesn't matter what you

shadow_copy for homes share
I have successfully setup shadow_copy for normal shares on our samba
test server. However, I cannot get it working for the homes share
because of its uniqueness.
Here is the homes share:

create mask = 0700
directory mask = 0700
browseable = no
