Vista Read/Write performance
Hello. I am setting up a smb server running debian etch for a small office. Due to circumstances outside my control, most of the client machines are running Windows Vista Ultimate. The shares are all set up properly, security is set, and we're good to go. Except that the throughput from any of the Vista machines to the server is at best slow and at worst abysmal. After tweaking the

Problem with `profiles`
I'm trying to move some roaming profiles from Domain A to B. All of the profiles are from XP SP3. The originating machine is Debian 5/AMD64, samba 3.4.5 from Debian packages. The destination machine is Ubuntu 9.10, but x86. From everything I've read and found online, `profiles` is supposed to work for XP with no problems. When I attempt to do a SID change on NTUSER.DAT, I get

vista svn checkout to mapped drive slower than xp
Hi, On a vista pc we run Syncrosvn client to check out svn repositories to a samba share. It works but on Vista this takes much longer than on windows xP. Checkout or status check on local disk work normally. (tried the same on a different vista pc, same problem..) To troubleshoot this I created a smaller test SVN repository to make it easier to read network captures. (I made a svn repository

Windows Vista file copying over openvpn
Hi all, I'm using openvpn to connect to a public server that has Samba v3.0.24 installed on Debian etch. The connection is over the internet (from a standard ADSL connection to a remote server on a 2Mbit LL). The problem is copying somewhat 'larger' files from the client to the server. Copying files of up to 2 megabyte goes well but larger files fail (4 MB, 6MB, or more). The error

Vista performance (uggh)
Issue: Vista reads slowly from a samba server. This appears to pop up periodically here and elsewhere. My samba.conf file has: [homes] ... vfs objects = readahead As suggested elsewhere. Writes are approximately 17-18MB/s which is acceptable. Reads are in the 8MB/s range which is appalingly slow. Using linux smbclient and windows XP clients I can read at 25+MB/s. I've enabled vfs

hi all, I have a vista client (Vista Business) doing a subversion checkout to a samba share (mapped to drive letter) but it's taking a VERY long time. when i checkout to my local hd it takes about 30 seconds, how can i start troubleshooting this? The subversion checkout is about 20 MB (on disk) and everything is connected via standard 100 mbit ethernet network. (vista client is connected via

Samba & Vista
Hi, I am using samba in ads mode with a Windows SBS 2003 domain controller. samba: 3.0.24-6 server os: Debian Etch. client os: Vista Business SP1 The system has been running effectively for more than 4 years with Windows XP machines. I now have a Vista laptop that I am using on the system and have hit an odd problem. Whilst shares that don't specify valid users still map with

ACL misbehavior moving from POSIX ACL -> acl_xattr
List, I had Samba 3.0 running on Debian Lenny configured to use POSIX ACLs on ext3. They worked fine, or at least as fine as NT -> POSIX mapping ever did. After testing 3.3 with acl_xattr on using a different machine, I decided to give it a whirl on the production server. And yes, I know it's experimental. I defined a share thusly: vfs objects = acl_xatt acl map full

Odd, slow Windows XP client download behavior
I recently set up a Samba server (3.0.24-6etch9) on my debian etch system. While accessing its shares through 1GBit Ethernet with a Windows XP SP2 client there's some real odd behavior: In one direction (uploading files from WinXP -> debian) the speed is just great, no matter what, around 35MiB/s. In the other direction (downloading a file WinXP <- debian) it idles at around 120KiB/s

Windows Vista 64-bit support
Where does the R build for Vista X64 stand? The last update message is from July last year (see [R] Improved Windows Vista compatibility from Prof Brian Ripley on 2007-07-11). Is it likely to happen in 2008? I suspect that more people will start using it as Vista is adopted more widely. And I'd certainly use it for large genomics data sets. Thanks, Dan Gatti UNC-CH

Browsning problems from Vista
I have a setup where a Vista machine that is behind a NAT connects to a Linux (debian) machine to access SMB shares on that machine. The connection is made with VPN using L2TP/IPSec. I have configured the Linux machine to act as WINS server and PPP will give the Vista machine a new IP on the same subnet and also tell Vista that the WINS server is the Linux machine. I have added one share

Samba and Vista?
I just purchased a new HP laptop running Vista Home Premium on it, turned it on and was able to get it to connect to the Internet through my home wireless network. But when I tried to see other computers on my network I got nadda... One of my computers is running Win2K so perhaps that is understandable, one XP Pro which I don't understand why Vista can't see it, and three of my

Samba & Vista
Hello, Does anybody know if Samba is compadable with Vista Yet? If so, is there a way for a group pr user policy to allow samba users to things in windows vista, like install programs w/o admin access. I know Vista has policies that can do this, where it cna basicly grant the user access, witha prompt or w/o a prompt. Can Samba support this too?

Samba <-> Vista RTM interoperability issue
Hi List! We've run into interesting problem with Samba and Vista. In short - there's a Samba server sharing NFS connection. What is shared is the NFS link mounted somewhere in root (say /nfspath) and [homes] which is in fact /nfspath/some/dir. And the problem is that Vista client can write a file onto the share using \\sambaserver\homes\dir notation, but cannot do it using

ACPI, Vista and Xen
Hi all, I''m running XP and 2003 Server fine as HVM guests (under a 32 bit non-pae Xen 3.0.3 self-compiled). I''ve read that Vista can *not* be /installed/ under Xen for it checks for ACPI support and install fails if it isn''t present. What if I do the install first from, say, plain Qemu (I''re reused qemu images from Xen) or VMWare (I''ve converted
