Samba to Kerberos via OpenLDAP
First, I'll just say this is a question principally about the arcane
mysteries of Samba to OpenLDAP authentication.
I've had Samba to OpenLDAP authentication running for a while now using
the samba.schema and the ldapsam module. Now I'd like to understand a
bit more about how that works in order to take it a step further and get
openLDAP to bind against a Kerberos database via

Kerberos authentication for non-windows KDCs
I was told recently that Kerberos authentication won't work against a
non-windows KDC. Is that accurate? So for instance, it is not possible
for Samba running on say RHEL, to authenticate against a Linux server
running MIT Kerberos?
Additionally, many people said that setting this up was
well-documented. Any suggestions of particularly good docs / how-to's?'
And lastly, is

Mysterious new problem: nss_ldap: could not soft reconnect to LDAP server
Suddenly as of this morning, none of my users can authenticate to samba
because nss_ldap is producing cryptic errors. Nothing has changed on
either the LDAP server or the Samba server. Looks like this in
/var/log/messages:
Aug 11 11:19:29 edgar smbd[8394]: nss_ldap: could not soft reconnect to

Yet, the LDAP server IS available, and happily chirping away

User SID problem with home directory
I'm having the problem in which users can access their group shares, but
not their home shares. These two shares are defined thusly in smb.conf:

valid users = @seref, @seref-read, @admin

Samba3.5 + OpenLDAP config/install problem
System Summary:
centos 6.2
samba 3.5
smbldap-tools 0.9.6
openldap 2.4.23
Hello,
I am installing smb 3.5 on a CentOS 6.2 host using smbldap-tools. I've
previously installed a similar configuration on RHEL4 using smb 3.0 but
CentOS now uses nss-pam-ldapd and nslcd instead of nss_ldap, so the
configurations cannot be moved straight across.
Currently, when I attempt to connect to an smb share

problem with [homes] share for users with unix logins
I have the [homes] section set up in my smb.conf so that
\\server.name\user connects to the user's home directory. Since I am
using OpenLDAP as a backend via smbldap-tools, for most users the home
directory comes from the homeDirectory variable in OpenLDAP.
However, when I have a user who also has a login on the samba machine,
that is, an entry in /etc/passwd, Samba seems to ignore the

Questions about Active Directory Password Cache overlay
Thanks to Buchan Milne, I'm looking into the Active Directory Password
Cache overlay for OpenLDAP, which seems to offer more or less what I'm
trying to do. Is anyone here experienced with it? Is this the right
place to ask or is there an openLDAP overlays list?
I understand this description of ADPC:

hblm program: porting from Splus to R
I am replying to the email below my signature;
it is nominally about dmp files, but apparently
specific to problems with Bill DuMouchel's
hblm program.
I have been using this program
on Splus for years, and ran into some of the
same problems Jack did in trying to get it into
R. I talked with Bill about it, and he didn't
know that there would be any problems; he
assumed that R was

LDAP users/groups not showing up with nis, pam, & ldap
I am trying to configure NIS, PAM, & LDAP on a CentOS 6.2 host. I've
previously installed a similar configuration on RHEL4, but CentOS now
uses nss-pam-ldapd and nslcd instead of nss_ldap, so the configurations
are a little different.
Currently, local users and groups are showing up but not LDAP users.
When I do a /getent passwd/ and/getent group/ I don't get LDAP users.

cross-realm Kerberos trust with a third Windows domain
Here is our scenario. We have a Windows 2008 domain I'll call CORP and
an MIT realm I'll call REALM. There is a one-way trust (AES enabled)
such that users in the CORP domain can access REALM resources. If I log
into a CORP workstation, I can access REALM resources as expected
(including samba).
We have a third Windows 2008 domain I'll call LAB. If I log into a LAB

Cannot connect from XP to Samba: Password prompt repeated
Fellow samba folk,
This one's making me want to tear out what little hair I have left.
THE *NIX PLATFORM: FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE, Samba 3.3.8.
THE ENVIRONMENT: Small domain, Windows 2003 servers and XP-pro based workstations. The FreeBSD server is a member server in the domain, so at least that works.
THE SYMPTOMS: This is bizarre. I can, using mount_smbfs on the FreeBSD side, easily

Does render() have 2 be last statement in controller method?
I have a controller method that is attempting to do a render based on a
potential error condition.
So I have
if (condition)
render()
else
..other code
end
....other code in method
Should I expect the render to take place immediately or does the render
call not work because it isn''t the last statement in the method?
Thanks,
Wes

Active Directory to OpenLDAP+Kerberos on Linux
Hi,
I have been working on Windows NT PDC to OpenLDAP+Samba migration
project and all is going on well, thanks to idealx.
Now, I want to now do migrate MS Windows 2000/2003 based Active Directory
to Linux+Samba+OpenLDAP+Kerberos.
Somehow, the impression that I am getting having gone through many
docs, including those from samba.org is that its not possible till
probably version Samba 4 is out.

v3.0.4 fails to compile (passdb/pdb_ldap.c) OpenLDAP 2.2.13 and MIT Kerberos?
I have been trying to put together a SAMBA installation with winbind that
will link to an existing ActiveDirectory, to allow UNIX (Solaris 9) hosts to
accept logins from people using AD credentials. This has been slow going.
Since I am running Solaris 9, Sun took a while to re-enable non-standard
PAM/nsswitch.conf entries so winbind would work at all, but this part is now
fixed.
I think I

No Link on Solaris 9 sparc, MIT kerberos, and openldap
Howdy,
I'm trying to build 3.0.14a on Solaris 9 sparc, and I am seeing a linker error.
I tried building yesterday (and had configure errors related to libs), and then
I found information about conflicts with Sun standard kerberos bits (and missing
header files). I've installed and compiled Openldap and MIT Kerberos, and
pointed LDFLAGS to the new installed locations. The new install

Thank you in advance

join samba server to openldap/kerberos directory
I googled a lot but didn't find any answer.
My problem is next:
I have Openldap/kerberos directory.
I have samba (samba-A), which acts as NT PDC and use ldap/kerberos as backend.
I have another samba server (samba-B) which I want to authenticate users in my directory.
Of course I can join it to my samba NT PDC, it works, but by this a loose ability to authenticate via kerberos tickets.
