samba/ldap setup stopped working (might be a challenge)
Hi,
two days ago my functioning samba/ldap server stopped working. I *think* the
problem is somehow related to the fact i transfered everything to a new
server, but that was two months ago. Trouble started yesterday morning after
a power-outage.
Configuration: ubuntu 8.04, with a standard samba, ldap and smbldap-tools
installed via apt-get.
When users tried to login, they got a message "a

Unable to write to Samba Share from WinXP
Samba 3.014a
I have three computers networked together. Two are WinXP Pro and one is a FreeBSD 5.4 running Samba.
I cam use 'smbclient' to exchange files between the computers. However, when I attempt to use the WinXP machines to send a file to the Samba machine I receive an error message. This is the usual message:

mount share using kerberos ticket fails
Did you "deleated the computer object" to allow kerberos services.
And did you add the CIFS/spn to the computer and keytab ?
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Generating_Keytabs
If its a member, which i assume.
kinit Administrator
net ads keytab add cifs/$(hostname -f) -k
net ads keytab add_update_ads -k
Add these and it should work.
You might need to restart or reboot., sometimes

I am sorry, I don't really understand the above: mount requires a keytab
AND a user ticket?

Unable to open most files within Linux from a windows share
I am trying to open files on my Linux box from a windows share. I can
browse to the directory, see the files, copy them to my computer, edit
them, save them and copy the files back (using Nautilus).
I can open a text file from the windows share with Gedit.
I can not open a text file with Kate: error: The file or folder

unable to access shares on Windows 98 machine
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on a new laptop. Everything seems
great, except...
I have this old Windows 98 machine that I treat as a server (no remarks,
please). I've had it for a long time. When I access the shares from the
Ubuntu 12.0.4 machine, a lot of files and directories that I know are
there do not show up.
I've tried just browsing to the shares in nautilus, places

weird characters in files created by gnome login on samba share
Hello,
I just tried a gnome login with an empty home directory on a samba
mounted directory, and this resulted in several files with strange
characters in the filenames in the end. (as created by the initial gnome
login)
I cannot reproduce this by hand, and it certainly does not happen when I
do the login on a local directory, or when I copy that local directory
to the samba directory.
I use
