Lost my madwifi setup
I rebuilt my notebook that has the atheros card in it, and forgot to save all of my setup to get it working. I am using dkms and the madwifi rpms from rpmforge. My modprobe.conf has a line: alias wifi0 ath_pci I can ifconfig wifi0 up But the command: /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant -dd -D madwifi -i wifi0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf fails. Now some of my old

need migration/upgrade help
Hello All, I am trying to migrate samba from a box with Mandrake 10.1 with Samba 3.0.10 to a new box running CentOS 5.2 with Samba 3.0.28. The two versions of samba are too differnet to simply copy the config and tdb files over to the new box and the Mandrake box won't upgrade past 3.0.10. I could really use some suggestions. Thanks The problem when I do that is the Centos box with Samba

[Slightly OT] Mac and Samba
Hello all... I have a question that is outside the realm of my experience but that has come up several times recently. I have a mixed network (some Macs, some PCs) that needs a server. I'm going through the standard process of deciding between Samba and a Windows domain controller, my strong preference being to install Linux/Samba server. The sticking point seems to be that the Mac users

Vista over VPN loses connection with workgroup
I've a server running CentOS 5, Samba 3.0.23c and OpenVPN-2.1beta4 A laptop running Vista connects to the server over VPN. The CentOS server is local, domain and preferred master, and also WINS server. It looks like every once in a while the Vista laptop drops the VPN connection, which gets re-established soon after that. But the problem is, it appears that after the dropout the Vista

COMPUTERNAME/Guest in login
Dear all, I have recently configured a samba server that I have a strange problem with, but it is not really consistent. I would be grateful for any help I can receive. This is what happens: When I browse the microsoft windows network and find my workgroup my samba server shows up. But when I double click on it I can't fill in my username. Instead it shows my computer name (client) followed

WINS via WAN problem
Hi everyone. I have two windows machines logging into my Linux machine via nxclient. One via a LAN and the other coming in through the internet. Both are sharing one printer and one folder. The one that is on the LAN I can smbclient -L <host> and see, but not the one via WAN. The shared folder works on both machines but the printer only works on the local. The shared printer via the

testing wireless security
I have been playing around with 3 ath based FreeBSD boxes and seem to have got everything going via WPA and a common PSK for 802.11x auth. However, I want to have a bit more certainty about things working properly. What tools do people recommend for sniffing and checking a wireless network ? In terms of IDS, is there any way to see if people are trying to bruteforce the network ? I see

Writing to shares directly
Within a Samba configuration, is it not advisable to create files on the directory on the local machines themselves? Out setup is like so: Server 1 (where the files reside): /data/shares/app01 Server 2 (mounts the above drive): /data/mounts/app01 If, on Server 1, I create a file: # echo test > /data/shares/app01/test The file is created, but on Server 2, I cannot seem to edit the file as

[Bridge] bridge problem when one interface is in blocking mode
Hi, We have a simple bridge setup but the ping (and other network traffic) does not work reliably. After tracing the code, it looks like a software bug. Since bridge software is been running by thousands of people. I guess I am wrong. Anyway, here is the problem. There are 2 boxes and each one has 2 interfaces, 1 ethernet and 1 wifi. STP is enabled for the bridge to avoid the loop. So the box 1

Yet another Samba How-to
Hi all, Just wanted to let you guys know that I put together a "High Level" Samba How-to that I believe is very informative for "Samba Beginners". I wrote it using Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Server as part of a book I promised a few clients that I contract for - although I did write it in such a way that it can be used for virtually any GNU/Linux Distribution. I wrote

Hard(?) lock when reassociating ath with wpa_supplicant on RELENG_7
I seem to be able to lock my machine by going into wpa_cli and asking it to 'reassoc'. The reason for question mark after "hard" is that debug information (caused by wlandebug and athdebug) is being printed on the console. The only way to get machine's attention is to hold power button for 8 seconds. Note: manual reassociation is just the handy way to reproduce the problem

Recommended wireless card (or is there a chance to get either iwi or ath fixed)?
Hi, after some time without FreeBSD I installed 7.1 on an IBM Thinkpad T30 (with ZFS root on encrypted geli, works great). Madwifi drivers afeter 2.6.18-128.
I have a atheros wiifi card on my Centos 5 that I use as a access point using hostapd. I noticed that after the upgrade to kernel 2.6.18-128 or above, the atheros driver comes with the kernel, ath5k, and it does?t let hostpad ou iwconfig set master mode on the card. Up to kernel 2.6.18-92 is workedd just fine using madwifi from rpmforge. Any ideas on that? Tks.

cached logons
Hi. I can't do cached logons in our new samba server. I had a dead crashed W2k server quickly replaced by samba-3. That meant create a new domain, restore backups and add all the PCs to the domain. It was impossible to ressurrect the old MS server. Anyway I'm facing a problem about cached logons. There is no way to make it work. I've been reading all the entries in the mailing list
