Random number generation
Hi All. (This is probably an incredibly stupid question :)) I have just noticed that every time I start an R2.3 session and request a random number (say with rnorm) that I receive the same number. AFAIK I have not set a seed at any point. Returning to an older version of R(v1.8) I get the behaviour that I have come to expect, where a new seed is automatically generated for each new session

Free space calculation gets it wrong
Hello! Running Samba 3.x on HP-UX 11.00, Linux and Solaris. I've got a problem with the free space calculation of Samba. The problem is, that Samba only seems to return the free space available in the top directory of a share and not the free space available in the current directory. That's a problem for me, since I share a directory on the server and then mount the actual

never encodes same twice?
Hello. As the subject of my email states, I've noticed that oggenc never encodes the same twice. i.e., encoding the same file twice, using the same settings and same OS, never results in identical files (checked using 'diff'). I know that a randomly generated serial number is put it, but it gets better: a diff (- a -u0) between these two encodings is ~120KiB. Umm... why?

rake db:migrate - error 'tSYMBEG'
I''m going through the ''Depot'' project in "Agile Web Development with Rails". I just made the 003_add_test_data.rb file and when I do a "rake db:migrate", I get this error and I can''t figure out what is wrong: rake aborted! ./db/migrate//003_add_test_data.rb:5: parse error, unexpected tSYMBEG 5. :description => (and the

How to limit Apple Mail (desktop)?
By default, Apple Mail downloads all e-mails from server's account. Previous versions of this client allowed to opt-out. The latest two versions? however, only allow to opt-out from downloading the attachments. The stress on the server is unbearable. We cannot ask users to be considerate: this is the default behaviour of Apple Mail. We need a server-side solution to the problem. Please

meetme conference latency degrades...
We have recently started making more frequent use of the meetme conference of our * system. We are using v1.0.8 with a 2.6.11 kernel on our system. We generally have 4 callers in it: two with the gsm codec and 2 with g729. Initially, the conference works fine and there is little latency. After about 15min., though, the latency is very noticable and by 25min it's unbearable. If we all leave

What am I missing?? Activerecord & Sessions!!
Can someone please explain why every time that I call an action in my controller, every model that is stored in the session needs to be interpreted by a database query? If I have four models stored in the session, I end up with five long "SELECT a.attname, format_type(a.atttypid, a.atttypmod), d.adsrc, a.attnotnull FROM pg_attribute a LEFT JOIN pg_attrdef d....." queries when *ANY*

[OT] Serving Multiple Stylesheets
I was wondering whether there is unbearable overhead involved in breaking css into multiple stylesheets? I''m running lighttpd, and the following article discusses why one might want to do that: http://justinfrench.com/?id=141 My CSS is beginning to get a bit lumpy to digest in one glance and the article(s) seem to make a cogent argument for separating functional elements out. I just

choppy and cracking sound from zyxel prestige 2002
Hi, Does anyone have suggestions hooking Zyxel Prestige 2002 to Asterisk? I have tested Zyxel Prestige with both supported codecs. Call with G.711 sounds very choppy and cracking. Almost can't understand a word. Today I installed G.729 support into Asterisk but unbearable voice quality remains. It's a little bit better though. I have tested that Zyxel ATA with some commercial SIP

odd swat issues, odd printer issue, odd crashes..
Before I start, can you CC me if you respond as im not subscribed. thanks! (this is samba 3.0.4 on suse enterprise linux, kernel 2.6.5) first, the swat issue. I had a machine that had 2 network interface cards in it. I have since removed one card, mainly because it caused weird performace issues unrelated to samba. the interface addresses were 192.168.0.200 and 192.168.0.201 another machine now
